A Word from Our President

The first month of school has already come to an end. As we look back, I hope you all are proud of the service you all contributed to our community! I was personally appreciative that our club was able to serve our community together. You all are building into honorable leaders; though our influence may seem small and insignificant, it all

it all counts to help build our communities. Also, I was happy to see more faces at this month's DCM. It was a really memorable event bonding together as a club. There will definitely be more memories in the future! Thanks for being an amazing club to serve! Stay golden Mariners. Sincerely, Chris Pile Club President

One may wonder why anyone would wake up at 5 am on a Saturday, but I say that’s the life of a dedicated volunteer. On September 21st was Division 4 North’s first service project at the Brain Tumor Walk in Anaheim, and we all had to be at Angel’s Stadium early in the morning to help set up. I quickly got ready and headed out to be picked up to go to the service. Five other Pacifica Key Clubbers and even more other Division 4 North members greeted me at the volunteer sign in, looking a little sleepy still but ready to work. I noted how well the yellow volunteer shirts went with our Key Club teal and how it reminded me of our golden goals district-wide, then proceeded to find a job to be done. What struck me at this service was the amount of yellow shirts surrounding me, all bustling around and helping in any way they could, from sanding wood for walkers to make signs with to helping set up chairs. The otters were busy bees that day, because setting up for an event takes a lot of prep, yet Division 4 North rose to the challenge. Even after our supposed shift was done, many stayed back to perform other tasks such as laying out food for hungry walkers. My favorite job was cheering on participants as they all walked for family and friends who fought or were fighting a brave battle against brain tumors. Being motivators was not part of our job description for the day, yet the otters brought the ideal of ‘Service with spirit” to the event and gave everyone encouragement to keep walking on. The high fives and smiles received from the walkers were definitely worth the extra time taken. On the way home, I nearly fell asleep in the back of my friend’s mom’s car, yet the rewarding feeling of sacrificing sleep and free time over the weekend to help the community kept me awake. I looked down at my oversized yellow shirt and felt truly golden, knowing that many other otters in my division were feeling the same way.

I felt the cold, crisp morning air as my friend, Dat Nguyen, and I walked together on the OCC campus to the OC Book Fair Festival. We happily chose to dedicate our morning to volunteer before DCM that same day. We were up to help make a difference in our community as much as we possibly could. The festival was scheduled for the next day, and we were there to help set-up and prepare everything beforehand. Before we were assigned any work, I got to meet other fellow volunteers, who were mostly Circle K members. The boys were separated from the girls so the girls wouldn’t have to carry heavy equipment for the stage. Jefferson, Dat, and I helped unloading the truck with all this equipment for some time before we were sent off to another task. To our convenience, Pacifica’s Key Club was able to volunteer together in one group and help sign up banners for each tent. Although there were only six of us, we had an enjoyable time working together. Tent after tent, we stood on ladders as we zip-tied each banner. Near the end of our shift, Westminster’s Key Club arrived and I was able to meet some of their members. We all carried chairs and tables to each tent before we left. Though there was only a few of us volunteering together, it was an enjoyable memory working alongside those individuals.

It was a night to remember as hundreds of not only Key Club members, but people who believed in a cure for cancer, gathered together to honor those who had fought heroic lives battling cancer. There was a sense of community as many worked together at different booths, inviting people to come help support for a good cause. All people present came with spirited hearts and minds and cheered their heart away as a way of showing great respect and honor to those who lived lives of cancer. Then the big moment came, as everyone gathered together with bright sticks to walk as one in the hope that one day a cure for cancer may be found. Despite the long walk, and the crowd of people, everyone encouraged each other with high fives, cheers, and words of motivation and encouragement. When we crossed the finish line, our eyes and our bodies cheered, for we had accomplished the support that those with cancer needed. This night was a night to remember because as a whole we all supported one another and believed that one day surely, there will be a cure.

Every year, the expansive Cal-Nev-Ha district divides Fall Rally into two events, Fall Rally North in Northern California and Fall Rally South in Southern California. Our club will be attending the latter at Six Flags Magic Mountain with numerous other Key Clubbers from our district! So what happens at this event?

Fall Rally South

When? Saturday, November 2, 7:30am-7:30pm Where? Six Flags Magic Mountain (meet @ Bolsa Grande High School) What? This is Key Club’s BIGGEST Fundraiser for PTP, where LTGs and Executive Officers get to be auctioned off and spend the day with the division that wins the auction for each. All money from the auction are then donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program Why? You get to participate in motivational programs and the spirit rally, meet new people while bond with others, truly feel that Key Club spirit, and most of all, help PTP!

Marinotter of the Month

Tommy Ta Grade: Freshman Member since: Freshman Year Why he’s our Marinotter of the Month: Even before becoming an official member, Tommy always came to services and events for Key Club this September! He is one of our shyer members, yet he pushed himself out of his comfort zone and met new people at all the club’s events as well as serving his community. We think that he is on his way to becoming a KEY member of our school’s club.

Congratulations, Tommy! We know you’ll be a great part of our OHANA.

An-otter Look

This year is going to be GOLDEN.

Do you ever get that feeling, when you know something is just going to turn out well? That’s how I feel about this term right now. We’ve gotten back to service, with events such as the OC Children’s Book Fair, and participation has steadily gone higher. More and more members are becoming actively involved in all Key Club has to offer! This only motivates us to work harder for you all.

Also, those not already part of our family are becoming interested and joining our club! I think our Member of the Month, Tommy Ta, is a perfect example of that, already so motivated and active as a member so early on in high school. With more people coming into our club, we can create an even greater impact on our community. That means more lives saved from MNT or PTP and much more. How great is that? Personally, I am also super excited to meet all of the new otters that share our passion for service. I know that through our common purpose, all of us can quickly bond and become a big, happy ohana.

And to think it’s only October. With such a strong and promising beginning, I believe we have enough momentum to make this year one of the best Pacifica Key Club has had, in terms of serving our community, bonding with one another, and making lasting memories.

With love, Kim Custodio
