The protests were motivated by their fear that they will lead to mass firings, although none have been reported since the government passed the reforms by royal decree on February 10th. The government, however, was not moved by the protests or cross- party opposition to the reforms. The Partido Popular's deputy leader, Maria Dolores de Cospedal, said on Monday that the protests were not a “majority response”, notin g that the PP had received a reformist mandate from an immense majority of Spaniards in the November 20th general election. She said the government is determined to carry out “an authentic overhaul of the labour model in this country, even though it is not popular”. While the new law makes it cheaper and easier to fire workers it also creates more flexibility by allowing companies to ignore collective deals on wages and conditions in order to reach agreements with their staff that will keep the company afloat. It also offers incentives, including tax breaks, for small and medium-sized companies to take on young people and the long-term unemployed. Our new Help Desk can help you! Labour reform sparksnationwide protestsDefenders of the lawcomplain that the unionsand opposition parties areconcentrating on the oneaspect – easier firing – thatwill frighten people intosupporting the protestsand eventual strikes andthat the media andgovernment should domore to get its morepositive aspects across tothe general public. The unions claim that thereform has already hadsome visible effects in thethe hospitality sectorwhere employers havealready imposed wagecuts. While the governmentinsists the reform is “fair, good and necessary”, theleader of the mainopposition Socialist Party,Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, called it “unfair, unnecessary andineffective,” on Mondayand said his party wouldseek its completeamendment in parliament. The Izquierda Unida(United Left) has called it a“weapon of mass

destruction of jobs andrights.”Meanwhile, in an articletitled “Spanish practices”,The Economist warned lastweek that the success ofthe reform will depend onwhether the labour unionschoose to protect jobs ormaintain the levels of theirmembers' salaries. Themagazine called thereform a “hodgepodge” ofmeasures that give theeconomy “tools to try tosurvive within the euro”since it allows an “internaldevaluation” through adrop in salaries. TheEconomist said it wasnecessary to change thelabour laws which “go backto the Franco era” and havecondemned “half of theworking population to goon the dole or dotemporary work”, while theother half enjoys “armour-plated contracts”. TheEconomist said the reform“blurs” the line that dividesthe Spanish labour marketin two which “will allowmore people to achievejob stability”.

His lawyer, Mario PascualVives, has confirmed thatUrdangarin will speak to thepress after his appearancein court although he addedhe did not know where orwhen. The judge willquestion Urdangarin aboutthe contracts his NóosInstitute was given by boththe Balearic and Valenciaregional governments toorganise sports and tourismconferences. The non-profitentity received some €6million from them between2003 and 2006, andprosecutors suspect that

much of the money wasdiverted to Urdangarin'sprivate companies.

His former friend José Luis"Pepote" Ballester, whoserved as the Balearicssports chief from 2003 to2007 and is also on trial, toldthe court last week thatUrdangarin got royaltreatment from JaumeMatas, the then-regionalhead of the Balearic Islandsgovernment. Ballester saidMatas ordered him toapprove all of Urdangarin'sgovernment contracts,

regardless of the price, which amounted to some€3 million.

Matas, a former PopularParty (PP) minister, is ontrial in a wider corruptioncase involving themismanagement of publicmoney. Hearings into theUrdangarin case began lastweekend at the court inPalma and will end onSaturday with theappearance of the Duke ofPalma, who received thetitle when he married theInfanta Cristina in 1997.

King's son-in-lawarrives for trialIñaki Urdangarin landed in Madrid on an American Airlinesflight from Philadelphia on Tuesday, on his way to make astatement in a Palma de Mallorca court on February 25th.

She said: “The governmentrespects the right toprotest, but labour leadersneed to explain better whythey are protesting.” Sheadded: “I understand theunions are protestingbecause of their reducedpresence or power withinthe area of labour relations, but we are thinking about

the rights of workers whoare out of a job.” More than5.3 million people arecurrently out of work andthe government haswarned the figure willclimb even higher before itsreforms begin to dig in.

She was speaking to thepress the day the El Mundo

newspaper reported that atop UGT union leaderearned €180,000 a year as adirector of Bankia, whichhe claimed went straightinto the union's coffers.

Sáenz de Santamaríasuggested that unionleaders should make publicwhat they earn.

The public will be able toview the portrait that isknown as the “otherGiaconda” which wasgenerally believed to be acopy of the original duringthe 14 years it hung in ElPrado.

However, two years agothe Louvre asked the Pradoto send the painting toParis for an exhibitioncalled “The Virgin, the childand Saint Anne”. Artexperts took a closer look atthe canvas with the idea ofmaking it more presentablefor the exhibition whenthey realised that the blackbackground paint hid a

landscape very similar tothe one in the originalhanging in the Louvre.

After the painting wascleaned the similarity waseven more striking and theexperts decided the workwas painted in Leonardoda Vinci's workshop duringhis lifetime, probably byone of his disciples, and notcopied later as was widelybelieved.

The painting is now onshow until March 13th,when it will go to Paris to bedisplayed in the exhibition“The last work of Leonardoda Vinci”.

Deputy Prime Minister Sáenz de Santamaría told the press afterthe Cabinet meeting meeting last Friday that self-interest wasbehind unions’ opposition to the government's labour reforms.

Ms Santiago told thejudge how she screamed forhelp as her daughter lay

dying under a pile of rubble, while the girl's father, aGuardia Civil, sobbed in theaudience as he listened toher statement.

A passer-by was alsokilled in the attack. Theprosecutor is asking 1,180years in jail for the accused.

In recent months, mostof the 500 or so ETAprisoners have asked forspecial benefits or to berelocated to jails in theBasque Country andNavarre to be nearer totheir families. But thePenitentiary Institutionshad turned down all therequests because they didnot meet the pertinentrequirements.

Scientists at maastricht University have created strips ofmuscle tissue using stem cells aimed at producing the firstlab-grown hamburger later this year. They said syntheticmeat could reduce the environmental footprint of meat byup to 60%, and would be more efficient than rearing animals.Experts estimate that food production has to double withinthe next 50 years to feed a growing population, but climatechange, water shortages and greater urbanisation will makeit more difficult to produce food.

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

When the Cabinet approved thelabour reforms on February 10ththe unions immediately went into

overdrive, calling for nationwide protests onSunday the 19th. Those who oppose thereforms are concentrating on one aspect –they make it cheaper to fire staff, reducingseverance pay from 45 days per year workedto 33. The unions are understandably angrybecause they put a lot of work into gettingsuch good severance pay for the workers, butI suspect other aspects of the reforms makethem madder still.

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenzde Santamaría hit the nail on thehead when she said after last Friday’s

cabinet meeting that she understood“unions are protesting because of thereforms reduce their presence or powerwithin the area of labour relations”. She wasreferring to the reform that allowscompanies employing less than 50 people toreach agreements with their workers withoutunion interference. This means that when acompany is in economic dire straits – as somany of them are – the bosses can sit downwith the workers and work out ways andmeans of avoiding closing down. This couldinclude a temporary reduction in wages orworking shorter hours – which is hard on theworkers but at least they’ll be able to hang onto their jobs until things get better.

So far, I haven’t read anyone in the pressor heard anybody on the telly givingdetails of all the other aspects that make

up the reform package. In fact, most of thepundits on the political chat shows seem tobelong to the Socialist Party. Even wherethere is an attempt to be impartial – on LosDesayunos on TVE1 and La Noche en 24Horas, TVE’s 24-hour news station, which arethe two most serious political programmeson Spanish TV – the Socialists end upshouting down the non-Socialists.

However, Sáenz de Santamaría andthe PP’s general secretary, MariaDolores del Cospedal, have been

acting as efficient counter-balances. Thelatter chided the unions for suddenly findingtheir voice after seven silent years – andtherein lies the rub.

The unions woke up on November 21stto find themselves in opposition. ThePP’s landslide victory the day before

had abruptly put an end to the years ofbounty they had enjoyed under the Zapaterogovernment, which bought the complianceof the two main unions with subsidiesamounting to more than €2 million each ayear.

The unions’ financial situation hasbeen one of the best kept secrets inthis country but now we’re

beginning to find out where they’ve beengetting their money from. For example, the general public was largely unaware ofthe fact that union representatives whomust sit by law on the boards of banksand cajas are paid anything up to €25,000for attending a single meeting. Yet mostmanual workers – the people they’resupposed to represent – earnconsiderably less than €1,000, and fewprofessionals earn much more – with theaverage take-home pay being around€1,200.

Then last week we found out that thehead of the Madrid section of theUGT union, José Ricardo Martínez,

received €180,000 a year as a director ofBankia which, he claimed, went straightto the UGT’s coffers. Deputy PM Sáenz deSantamaría immediately called on unionleaders to make public what they earn, saying the government “has takentransparency on board, and the unionsthat receive public subsidies shoulddecide if the moment has come for themto do so as well”.

The government has already cutback those subsidies by 20 per centbut it would be interesting to find

out exactly what those subsidies are for. Iremember the Zapatero governmentgiving out subsidies to help unemployedpeople train for new careers – one ofthem being for captains of yachts!

Another aspect of the labourmovement that rarely sees the lightof day concerns the “liberados

sindicales” – union representatives whocan take time off by law when they haveto attend to union matters. According toa report in La Razon newspaper, there arearound 10,000 such representatives whocost their employers – the governmentamong them – some €500 million a year. However, the paper admitted that thefigures are based on its owninvestigations – the unions have alwaysrefused to release detailed informationabout these people. What we do know isthat they often take advantage of theirposition and just turn up for their paycheques, although the law says they canonly take 15 to 20 hours off per month.

No wonder the unions are on thewarpath – under the newgovernment they're going to have

a harder time keeping their secrets.

Paying to keep a treasureThe union party’s over

The long battle for the Odysseytreasure finally appears to be over.Spain this week is set to bring back

the estimated 594,000 silver and goldcoins and other artefacts from the 19thcentury sunken shipwreck that OdysseyMarine Exploration brought to thesurface in 2007 and which have been atthe centre of a legal fight in the UnitedStates. On Friday, a federal magistrate inTampa, Florida, where the treasurehunter is located, gave the final order forOdyssey to turn over the estimated$500,000 trove to Spanish officials. Theruling came after the US Supreme Courtdenied Odyssey’s last chance to stopSpain from bringing home what isconsidered perhaps the biggest find everto be recovered from the bottom of theocean.

But besides all the legal moves,Odyssey officials had been keenlyworking behind the scenes in an

effort to try to win their battle. Lawyers forthe firm had asked Spain to fulfill a hostof requisites before allowing them to takethe coins. Among them: requiring Spainto pay some $400,000 in storage andconservation fees for the artefacts tocover the costs incurred over the past fiveyears; telling Spanish officials that it istheir own responsibility to haul the coinsand the rest of the artefacts to militaryaircraft expected to arrive in Tampa thatwill airlift the trove; and forewarning thegovernment that it cannot have access toa portion of the treasure that is beingstored in Gibraltar, outside US federalcourt jurisdiction. That was only the endof Odyssey’s last minute attempts to keepthe small fortune it discovered.

Over the past few years, Odysseyexecutives have been givinggenerous amounts of

contributions to US lawmakers – all fromthe Republican Party – that now shed lighton what may have been a deviousattempt to get Congress in Washington tochange the law in its favour. Last year, asmall but suspicious provision in thedefence spending bill was included byseveral Republicans from Florida that, ifhad been passed, may have givenOdyssey an easy argument for the courtsin the United States to rule in its favour. Asmall change was included in the so-called 2004 Sunken Military Craft Act thatwould have allowed US law to open adoor for private salvage firms like Odysseyto pluck anything from shipwreck vesselsthat carried private goods. The provisionwas rejected in early December.

The US courts have sided with Spainin its argument that the NuestraSeñora de las Mercedes, sunk in

1804 by the British navy off the coast ofCádiz, is protected by federal sovereignimmunity laws. Odyssey had argued thatLas Mercedes was a private mail frigatethat was ferrying passengers and personalgoods, including the coins that belongedto private citizens, from South America toSpain when it was sunk. But disagreeinghistorians say the ship was employed bythe Spanish crown at the time whentensions between France, Spain andBritain were coming to a head.

Odyssey had hired a notableWashington lobbying firm JenkinsHill to try to convince lawmakers

to change the law. At the same time, thetreasure hunter’s top executives gavethousands of dollars in politicalcontributions to the amendment’ssupporters, including Senator MarcoRubio and Representative VernBuchanan, both of Florida, according toFederal Elections Commission records. The Odyssey board members also helpedfinance Mike Prendergast’s unsuccessful2010 bid for a House of Representativesseat. The controversial Republican andformer Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, whocalled his female incumbent Democraticopponent “a bitch” on his Facebook pageduring the campaign, is now head of theFlorida state’s office of veteran affairs. It isnot clear what Prendergast had promisedOdyssey executives, including its lawyer, for them to give so much money to hiscampaign.

In the end, Spain will get an historicdiscovery for its museums at theexpense of a group of greedy guys who

enjoy going treasure hunting on theweekends. And US law has rightfullyestablished that not all hidden trovesdiscovered fall under the finders-keepersdoctrine.

Your outlook on the World nSpecial Feature 13the ewsn

What do you think is the most frighteningthing someone can tell you?You don’t have enough money in your bank account to pay the phone or electricity bill? Yep, not nice. Or, you can’t payyour mortgage and are going to lose your house or your business? Wow, that’s scarey! While both of these thingsare pretty stressful, probablythe most frightening thing aperson can ever be told is“I’m sorry, we’ve done all wecan and there’s nothingmore we can do for you”.Now that is positivelyterrifying.

At this point you andthose you love will realisethat you have a terminalillness and there’s nothingthe doctors or anybody elsecan do to help apart fromperhaps giving you someidea as to how long you haveleft. Maybe you’ve gonethrough months or evenyears of treatment for yourcancer or illness. Maybe itwas just too late by the timeit was discovered to doanything about.

When this happened toJoan Hunt’s husband someyears ago, not only was it themost awful news they couldhave received, there wasalso no such thing as ahospice or cancer society tohelp them through it.

We on the Costa del Solare now incredibly fortunatebecause Joan didn’t just givein, she had a vision ofhelping other people getthrough the ordeal of losingsomeone close to you. Shebasically got off her bumand her dedication resultedwith Cudeca beingregistered as an associationin 1992. Through lots of hardwork, Cudeca waseventually “upgraded” to afoundation here in Spain in1999. To be registered as afoundation means thateverything has to bethoroughly checked byofficials to make sureeverything is above boardbefore you are granted thisstatus – all the accounts, premises, employees, etc. With foundation status thebanks and financialinstitutions will lookfavourably on Cudeca. Tothis end the Board ofTrustees is formed of highlyrecognised professionals, who, at no cost to Cudeca, ensure that the aims of theFoundation are compliedwith.

The indomitable Mrs.Hunt – now in her 80s –persuades and cajolesanybody and everybody sheand her team can think of todonate money to keepingCudeca alive. Their aim togive a “special kind ofcaring” is enhanced by theirother motto “Giving life to

days”. Ask any of theirpatients and families andthey would tell you that theywouldn’t know how to copewithout Cudeca’s help. Withterminal care, they can’t giveyou more days to live, butthey can make those thatyou have as comfortableand special as they canpossibly be. The basic aimsof Cudeca are to care, relieve, accompany andoffer the specialist care thatis involved in treatingpatients resident in theprovince of Málaga, who aresuffering from advanced orterminal cancer – whichincludes giving support andcomfort to their family.

Now, pretty much everyweek we run little editorialpieces about what functionshave been put on and howmuch has been donated toCudeca but we rarely getinto how the money hasbeen spent and, recentlywith “el crisis” people havebeen wondering where allthe money is going. So I’lltell you! It costs around €2.1million every year to run thehospice and its services.Since it started Cudeca hasmade a year-on-year lossand in 2010 almost had toclose the doors of the in-patient unit due to lack ofenough support to keepgoing – the accounts for yearend 2009 showed awhopping €415,000 loss!

On March 30th 2010,actor Antonio Banderas,Patron of the FundaciónLágrimas y Favores, duringthe inauguration ceremony, undertook to help Cudecaon a permanent basis, supporting their campaignto raise funds andspecifically gain members. His wife, actress MelanieGriffiths also pledged hersupport. Public support ofthis calibre undoubtedlyimpacts on all areas of long-term fundraising for theorganisation. In 2010 theyear-on-year loss haddecreased to €278,000 – stillfar too high but going in theright direction. This wasfollowed by fourannouncements ofbequests includingproperties which, once thesale and legal aspects weretaken care of, wouldincrease income verysubstantially in 2011. InJuly2010, the sponsorship ofa room in the In-Patients’Unit was confirmed; thiswas the biggest individual

donation ever received byCudeca. All of thesesuccesses had a financialimpact which made itpossible on 15th November2010 for the Trust to approvean Action Plan which keptall of the care services going,at least during 2011.Cudecahave a policy of totaltransparency as far as theirfunds go and, as afoundation they are legallyobliged to do so.

There are 12 shops fromEstepona to Nerja whichbring in about a third ofCudeca’s money. In theseshops, more than 450volunteers give their timefreely, working anythingfrom full-time while theshops are open to one ortwo hours a week. Thevolunteers are exactly that –they do not get paid for thetime they devote to Cudecabut, obviously without thisarmy of helpers Cudecashops could not function. They are each worth theirweight in gold!

And talking of volunteersthere is another army ofequally treasured volunteerswho ferry patients fromtheir homes to and fromhospitals all over the region.

The hospice stands onland that was donated toCudeca by the Ayuntamientof Benalmadena. Thebuilding itself has 15 bedsand takes a maximum ofnine in-patients at a time. Why the disparity innumbers? Well, because ifyour loved one had aterminal illness that needed24 hour care within ahospice environment, you’dwant to be there too, wouldn’t you? I certainlywould, and having thecomfortable furnishedrooms with two beds inallows this to happen. Therooms have patio styledoors that have their ownlittle patio with furniture forthose that can get outsideand overlook well keptgardens (pictured aboveright). For those who are lessmobile but still want to getoutside, the doors are bigenough so the beds can bewheeled outside into thefresh air if the patient wants.Ideal! They also have achildren’s play room withbrightly coloureddecorations and toys forchildren visiting relatives orfriends of relatives. Cudecahas evolved over the years toform a complete and

comprehensive organisationoffering all aspects ofpalliative care, given withoutcost to patients sufferingfrom a non-curable illness. The majority of Cudeca’spersonnel are Spanish andall are bi-lingualSpanish/English. Thisavailability of a minimum oftwo languages is a greatcomfort to their patientswho go to them from amultinational community.Just think how it is when youcan’t speak properly to yourdoctor in English if you go tosee him when you’re feelingrotten – now times that byabout a million when youcan’t get him to understanda problem when you have aterminal illness. See what Imean?

But that’s not all that thehospice does. Their DayCare Centre has between 12and 15 patients brought tothem either by their relativesor by the aforementionedvolunteers. Here they can sitin a sunny room withstunning views talking withpeople who are in the samesituation which leads tomany fears being alleviated. Now imagine howfrightening it can be to havesomething else go wrongwith you. Is it normal? Hassomeone else had the sameexperience? How did theytell someone close to themtheir situation? The help theDay Centre people give toeach other is immeasurable.Top that with yet anotherhost of voluteers, all highlytrained, that give thepatients manicures, pedicures, massage, reflexology, hairdressing(whether it’s for your ownhair or your new wig), andassisted bathing for thosewho can no longer do itthemselves. The Day CareCentre provides anothervital role to the patients andtheir families.

And did I mention thekitchens? Of course, withdifferent illnesses, differentdiets have to be coped withand the cheerful kitchenstaff carry out their dutieswonderfully every day.

Cudeca also runcounselling sessions forpatients and their families. The situation they findthemselves in is one of themost stressful possible andto be able to talk out yourworries and fears, plus theanger that a lot of peoplefeel, is an absolute essential

and all Cudeca’s staff arehighly trained with regulartraining and guidancecourses.

Last week Cudecareceived their 7,000th (yesseven thousand!) patientand almost 20% of thesepatients are of non-Spanishnationality. Many of theSpanish patients arereferred to Cudeca from thehospitals as are, increasingly, the number offoreign patients includingthe British.

Cudeca haveapproximately 160 home-care patients at any onetime looked after by fourCudeca Home Care teams. These patients add up toapproximately 700 everyyear. Many people willchoose to stay in their ownhomes surrounded by theirfamilies and friends. Butthey’re not trained doctorsor nurses in the main sothey need help and this iswhere the Cudeca HomeCare Teams come in.

So – now to money. Torun an organisation the sizeof Cudeca even with all theirvolunteers costs a fortune. You simply cannot getdoctors, nurses and allmanner of essential staff ofthe calibre needed and withthe understanding of theirpatients needs for peanuts.Cudeca needs to raise, as Imentioned before, over twomillion euros a year to keepgoing with their in-patient,daycare and palliative homecare services that are a vitalpart of our community onthe Costa del Sol. You mightthink that’s a lot of money, and it is but, think howmuch you would need thesepeople if you or someoneyou love is faced with thissituation. The care they giveis without cost to thepatients and their familiesso no-one is turned awaybecause they can’t pay forthe expensive care and

drugs to ease their pain andsymptoms away. Cudecaneeds your money – youmight very well one dayneed Cudeca so, if we all putin just a bit, or whatever youcan, Cudeca stands achance of keeping going.

In Malaga Province alonethere were nearly 275,000foreign residents registeredin 2011, almost 57,000 areworking and affiliated to theSocial Security system. These are the registeredpeople, there must be manythousands more who arenot registered. If you countjust the people that areregistered and they in turngave just €10 each per year(and that’s just usforeigners!) – that wouldadd up to €2,750,000 –enough to keep them goingand pay off a bit of the olddebts.

I know times are hardfinancially, they are foreverybody but not half asbad as for those who have aterminal illness and theirfamilies who need .Cudeca’shelp so, come on, we allknow where the Cudecashops are, raid your pockets, piggy bank, under the floorsafe, biscuit tin in the garageor anywhere you havemoney stashed and take italong to one of the shops, tothe hospice itself at the topof Benalmadena, or to anyof their events and make adifference to the people inyour own community. If awoman of over 80-years-oldcan give of her time andenergy, there’s no excuse forthe rest of us not doing ourbit so now is the time to givea tenner or more if you canafford it!

You can read more aboutthe hospice, what they doand even look at theirfinancial figures atwww.cudeca.org

Administration ofTablets – part 2Place one hand across the

muzzle and insert aforefinger and the thumbgently into the space behindthe canine teeth (fangs) thengently press the thumb orforefinger on to the roof ofthe dog’s mouth. Providedyou have sufficient strengthand dexterity in your wrist tobe able to cope with thedog’s head movement, thisstrategy usually effectivelyprevents the shutting of thejaws on your fingersproviding you maintainpressure on the roof of themouth. It is most importantthat the gentle pressure onthe hard palate is notreduced otherwise the

mouth will clamp shut. With the tablet in the

other hand it can then bepushed as far down thethroat as possible and if thejaws are then quickly closedand the throat stroked thetablet is usually swallowed.I understand there are

certain pill pushers. Canthese be used? There are certain devices

on the market to help gettingtablets into dogs. Some ofthese are reasonablyeffective but none are, in myexperience, 100%. However, the idea may be worthtrying. Can I disguise the tablets

with anything?Yes, many people find

that wrapping the tablet in

butter, coating it in somefavourite food or tidbit – asalready described in lastweek’s article – will often dothe trick. It should beremembered that there arecertain tablets that you mayhave been directed to giveon an empty stomach andcare must be exercised thenin the amount of food ortidbits allocated. But one ortwo dog treats in order to getthe medication into the dogis preferable to nomedication at all!Can I crush the tablets

and mix them in food?It may be possible but

some tablets are speciallycoated because the actualdrug is unpleasant tasting. Inthese cases you will achieve

nothing by mixing it intofood! I get the tablet into the

throat and follow all theinstructions but frequentlyfind it on the floor some timelater.Even the most

experienced of us have hadthis. If you are not sure thatthe tablet has beenswallowed dripping a littlewater into the mouth withthe aid of a syringe usuallyensures that it is swallowed.Alternatively try gentlypinching the nose and thenstroking the throat.

The riders make their way through Benalmadena

Well, maybe you’ve just arrived in Spain and don’t know the systems or what you need toget done to make yourself legal here or, maybe, you’ve been here for years but have foundthe routes through all the bureaucracy impossible to work through so you ignore whatyou really do need to do and hope there’ll be no consequences. Sound familiar? We’ve allreceived letters from the electric and telephone companies that we don’t understand. Thenthere are the ones from the council or the tax or IVA people. They’re, of course, in Spanishbut they look like you’re in trouble about something and you have absolutely no idea whatit is so. So what do you do? We all react in one of three ways:1. We know someone who speaks enough Spanish to try and translate it for us. Now you know what it says but do you know what you have to do about it?

2. We take it to a lawyer that will cost us a fortune to find out what it’s about.3. We put it in a drawer and hope it will go away! The problem with two of the above is that you are still stressed out about it all and, no,

it isn’t going to go away and now, maybe, you really are in trouble! It’s simply the same as in the UK. If you know the systems and speak the language there’s

rarely a problem if things are dealt with properly. For instance, if you got a letter from BT,you’d phone them and sort it. Here, it’s in Spanish, they don’t speak English apart from ifyou hang on for around half an hour waiting for the person they say speaks English andthen – guess what? – they don’t understand what you’re on about. We all know it’s a painbut we have chosen to live here and this is what we have to put up with if we’re not fluentin the language. On the other hand, even if you’ve done all the language courses availableand are pretty fluent, do you know who to go and speak to and which hoops you have tojump through or work round to get to the right people who can sort it all out. Now, that’s where we come in. We have over 45 years experience in dealing with

everything from Telefonica to Sevillana Endesa to the water people, from importing carsfrom abroad and re-registering them to checking that there’s no charges outstandingagainst them before you even buy them. We can help you with translations to do withhospitals, town halls, police etc., and we can even help you with getting your kids intoschool. Want to make sure your house is legal and if not, make it so? Come to us. Want topurchase a property and make sure there are no outstanding bills on it? Come to us. Wecan help you with practically anything you can think of and, if we can’t, we can refer youto a trustworthy expert in whatever field you need that can. So, when it looks like there’sno light at the end of the tunnel, come to us and we’ll turn the torch on for you!Call The News Help Desk: Duncan Burrell 607 590 977 or 952 454 491 for The News Help

Your outlook on the World nOut & About 17the ewsn

Last weekend wevisited a restaurant inFuengirola for the first

time.

Don Q, situated onthe Paseo Maritimonear where you

would find the carousel inthe summer (to the left ofthe PYR Hotel and oppositethe children’s play area onthe beach) has been takenover and the new ownersand new staff have madevast improvements.

Tine and Allan(pictured right withone of their staff)

owned the very popularbuffet restaurant, TopTwenty, on the paseo forsome eight years but thiswas a much smallerrestaurant at the other endof town and, after taking abreak from the business fora while, they decided thatthis is where their hearts lieand have taken over theDon Q. The husband andwife team are originally

from Odense in Denmarkbut have been on the Costadel Sol for 14 years so theyknow the area well and, more importantly alsowhere all the goodsuppliers are.

The clean and prettyrestaurant servesbuffet food and is

open from 1pm until 10pmevery day of the year. Yes,every single day! Therestaurant seats 100 insideand is split leveled so isabsolutely ideal for private

parties, be they birthdays, anniversaries, office partiesor just a good excuse to gettogether, eat, drink andhave fun. Outside, theterrace can seat another 80with shade in the summerwith comfortable chairsand a pretty vinedecoration.

They are very fussyabout the food theyserve and everything

has to be fresh and inseason. Tine has searchedhigh and low for the bestquality suppliers and youwill not find any bottledvegetables in thisrestaurant – everything is ofthe best quality.

You can eat as much asyou like for just €8.95per person and there

is a huge range of dishes.

For my starter, I hadfresh prawns that stilltasted of the sea they

were so fresh, a breadedfillet of fish, calamari a laRomana plus somebeautifully crisp coleslawand fresh bread. Myhusband started with theprawns, thinly sliced JamonSerrano – just as it shouldbe, rare cold roast beef andsome Russian salad,

For our next course, Ihad to have some ofthe beef as I had been

told how good it was (andhe was right, it really wasgood), a spicy pork dishthat was delicious, asparagus spears, rice and Ieven had some chips! Myhusband had curriedchicken that was good andnot too spicy hot, he also

tried some of the spicypork, paella, and a fillet offish – quite a mix but that’sthe beauty of Don Q, if youwant to mix and match youcan do just that.

For the third course Itried some roast porkfrom their carvery

area with roasted leek, pineapple and mandarinpieces. Yes, I know it soundsodd but try it, fruit withpork or chicken gives thedish a whole new lift anddimension. Of course, youcould always have it withchips, roast or jacketedpotatoes, all of which arethere for you if you prefer. My husband also had theroast pork but he had itwith fresh Mediterraneanroast herbed vegetables, roast potatoes and amedley of steamed freshvegetables.

Nearly full by thistime, I then had adelightfully smooth

chocolate mousse and myhusband had the homemade “flan”.

Also available aremeatballs, pasta,home-made cakes,

chilli con carne, soups, lotsmore salads and fresh fruit.

The choices will bechanged every week, some new ones will

be added and some takenaway according to seasonso, just because you’ve beenonce doesn’t mean you’ll bebored next time you go.Whatever Tine has foundthat’s fresh could well beadded to the repertoire ofdishes available.

Drinks are all at veryreasonable priceswith everything

from a nice glass or bottleof red, white or rosé wine, beers and soft drinks, or alitre of beer, tinto verano, sangria or soft drinks foryourself or to share. Fancy acocktail or spirit? You canhave those too!

Last but not least, enjoya nicely presentedcoffee as you like it or

a liqueur coffee.

All in all, Don Q withits new managementand team is

definitely worth visiting forlunch or dinner. The qualityof the food is excellent andthe prices are verycompetitive – definitelygood value for money.

New managementand staff have madeall the difference to

this delightful restaurant.

Don Q, PaseoMaritimo, 40,Fuengirola is open

7 days a week, 365 days ayear from 1pm until 10pm.

The long awaited digitalprojector has finally arrivedin “Sala 1” at the La Trochacinema in Coin. Problemswith the sound matchingthe film or not being able tofind the sound in Englishfor the film showing arelegendary locally but now, they should be a thing ofthe past. For those of youwho are used to all theEnglish films being shownin “Sala 5”, don’t go and sitin the wrong screeningroom!

So, for the first film withthe new projector we havethe recent adaptation fromthe famous John Le Carrébook “Tinker Tailor, Soldier,Spy”. Colin Firth, GaryOldman, John Hurt, MarkStrong and BBC’s newSherlock, BenedictCumberbatch to name buta few. The question at theheart of the film issimplicity itself: Is there aSoviet secret agent at the

very highest echelons ofBritish intelligence? Gettingto the answer, however, couldn't be moredeliciously, thrillingly, brilliantly complex.

Starring a surprisingGary Oldman andmasterfully directed byTomas Alfredson, "TinkerTailor" comes by thatcomplexity honestly, courtesy of the subtle, allusive 1974 John le Carrénovel set in a mercilessespionage world wheretrust is an illusion andnothing is remotely what itseems. This is a film towhich very close attentionmust be paid, but therewards of doing so areconsiderable.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,Spy is showing at the LaTrocha cinema, in the LaTrocha Commercial Centreon the Coin to CartamaRoad (A355) tomorrow,Thursday 23rd and on

Monday 27th February at8.10pm. There may be anextra performance onThursday so for any moreinformation and to checktimings, [email protected]. for anychanges before you go. Thebox office opens at 5pm,you cannot book inadvance of the day and youget numbered seats to sitin.

Going to bea Ghost Cinema

Safe House There are many moviesthat I tend to avoid,

normally big budget onespacked with big names, and“Ghost Rider” was one ofthem. Back in 2007 thismovie received mixedreviews, those who lovedthe comic didn’t care aboutCage’s poor acting, they justloved anything to do withGhost Rider. Some found thewhole thing ratherdisappointing, so I’m goingto be fair, and give it abalanced view.

Based on the Marvelcomic character,

Nicholas Cage plays JohnnyBlaze, a motorcycle stuntdriver who escapes deathcountless times because hesold his soul to the Devil(Peter Fonda) years earlier inexchange that his fatherwould beat cancer. The Devildoesn't totally keep his endof the bargain so Johnnyescapes to fame but soonthe Devil shows up wantinghim to become the GhostRider and destroy his sonwho is trying to take over hispower.

The plot doesn’t reallymake much sense and all

through the film there aregiant holes. Most of thecharacters aren’t developedand some of them aren’teven part of the story, not tomention the dialogue whichis laughable and corny. Thebudget was over $100

million, yet it feels cheap andlazy, but some people did infact like this film. Personally,

alarm bells started ringingfor me, when I heard thenames Cage and Fonda.Cage is hit and miss, most ofthe time, but Fonda, whathas he ever done that wasgood?

Now if you thoughtthings couldn’t get any

worse, believe me, they do.The sequel is due to premierthis week, and from whatI’ve read, people who likedthe first part hate this newone and the ones who hatedthe first one, hate this onetoo! Oh, it’s not lookinggood! And here is why, never make a sequel with adifferent director, if thedirector won’t part-take in a“part 2”, he must know it’sgoing to be bad – that iswhy he’s jumped ship.

Ihaven’t seen this “sequel”,but from what I’ve seen on

the trailers, it looks dreadful.Christopher Lambert is in it,Lambert has only ever beenin one decent film and eventhat is debatable. What “TheHighlander” really good?Hmmm, it was ok for the‘80s.

Reviews of the sequel arequite fierce. From what I

can gather, it appears thatCage has given up, hisacting is practically non-existent. I read somewhereand I quote “I've seen betteracting out of most middleschool and high schoolproductions”.

It makes you wonder whythey decided to make a

sequel, if no one can bebothered to put any effortinto it. The budget was $25million short of the first one,but apparently the effectsare worse. Plenty of moviegoers are disappointed inthis movie and are askingwhy Hollywood wasted themoney in making a clearlyterrible movie.

I’m not saying don’t go andsee this movie, I’m just

saying don’t get your hopesup!

Essentially Need LeonardLeonard Cohen is one of thegreatest artists of the last halfcentury, but his albums areoften uneven, meaning thathe is better served bycompilations than manymusicians. If you are new toLeonard Cohen, then this isthe best primer you canbegin with. While it is notnecessarily his bestcollection of works and doesnot necessarily comparewith his albums taken byitself, you will find the songsthat have influenced singersfrom the 70s to today.

The first of the two CDsstarts with Leonard Cohensinging so well on"Suzanne;" this ballad placesLeonard squarely front andcentre and that's quite allright by me! I thinkLeonard's voice is quitegood; it has a certainvulnerability to it that simply

must endear him to manypeople. We also get a fineballad in "Hey, That's NoWay To Say Goodbye;" thesong also has a very welldone guitar arrangementand Leonard Cohen nevermisses a beat! He handlescomplicated tempo and keychanges very well and thisimpresses me. "Hey, That'sNo Way To Say Goodbye" is abig highlight of the first CD.

"Chelsea Hotel #2" is avery sensitive melody thatmoves me a lot; and I reallylike "Who By Fire" whichsports a more lush musicalarrangement to accompanyLeonard's singing. "Who ByFire" is very nicely done andmemorable at that! Listenalso for "If It Be Your Will"Leonard expands his vocalrange a bit to sing this tunewith what sounds like a lot ofminor keys and chords that

are intended to touchpeople's innermostsouls. "I'm Your Man"has an excellent beat;and the first CD closeswell with LeonardCohen performing"Tower of Song.""Tower of Song" hasquite an interestingarrangement and it fits inwell with Leonard'svocalizing. I think you'll like"Tower of Song."

The second CD opens upwith Leonard performing"Ain't No Cure For Love;""Ain't No Cure For Love" hassome pretty goodharmonizing on backup tobolster Leonard Cohen'ssinging. "First We TakeManhattan" has a soundthat reminds me of a type of`80s beat; and Leonard neversings a superfluous note. Thesound effects of the electric

musical instruments workvery well for "First We TakeManhattan" and Leonard'sexcellent diction bolsters hissinging even further."Democracy" is another ̀ 80ssounding tune that is bothcatchy and memorable; I likethe percussion on"Democracy" as Leonarddoes this one up right. There's also "Waiting ForThe Miracle;" and onenumber I always enjoy is"Closing Time." Great!

This week choose your battles with care - there could be some are just not meantto be fought. New relationships that expand your vision as well as your perspectivewith teacher types or possibly people from other lands and cultures can have away of totally altering and loosening a rigid inner process. Right now you are beingreminded that it isn't exactly what it is that you do, but what matters most is howwell you do it and the passion you put into your craft.

This is a great time for a creation of any kind and by the weekend the energy becomesmuch more sensual and passionate in nature. You are getting everything in order, although it could feel that life is moving at a pace of two steps forward and one stepback, innovation will be the key to make sure that certain things take hold. Lean intothe moment not with your mind but with your keenly developed intuition and theway will be strikingly clear.

At the end of the day when you are looking to catch a break or a way through, it allbecomes about who you know not what you know. Who you know could helpmake something happen in a snap. What you know may get you there eventuallybut it could take years and in some cases lifetimes. This week you are reminded ofthe power of connection and your ability to communicate what you need with theone person who has the power to help you get what you want.

You could be seeing a change in attitude in others towards you, they can sensethat you are on a new path and that somehow you're different. They know betterthan to under-estimate you anymore. You have the creative magic working for youand all the charm and grace a person could ever hope to have. Do not put thingsoff, prioritize your actions and get things done by taking charge of your future in aproductive and passionate way.

A gesture of love or assistance at just the right time makes your day, often attimes like these all it takes is a warm fire after coming in from the cold to createrelief or to calm the inner unrest. When the body is comfortable, far more ispossible and the emotions can stabilise too. Focus your attention this weekon your own home life and follow through on doing the things that you knowwill enhance your living conditions.

The heat is being taken off something giving you time to think before taking acourse of action you may otherwise regret. You are likely to attract all sorts ofattention right now and all you have to do is just ask and your wish may very wellbe granted. The focus of the moment is about finding the balance in yourrelationships and interactions with other. Time is on your side so do not skip anysteps. Get any agreements in writing, this will let others know you mean business.

For a while now there has been a long drawn out something that has required muchmore from your heart, body and soul than you thought you ever had in you. If youanswered the call and you did the work, you may be currently benefitting from thediscipline required. If you are still steeped in something, there is hope on the horizon.A conversation or meeting could prove to be fruitful whereby you finally feel likeprogress is near or here.

If you feel you are missing something or not clear about how someone feels orwhere they are coming from, sit and stay but don’t speak, simply listen and youwill get clarity. Keep plans open so that you are able to take advantage ofopportunities as they may appear, it is good to go with the flow right now. Asthe week unfolds you will see and hear many things that you've been missing, these little bits of information make all the difference in the world.

A pressing matter will ease where you have previously felt helpless. There is a greatdeal of emotion that may be hidden that you are not addressing because you don’tfeel you have the energy to deal with it all or you fear the reactions of others. Inessence it may feel as if there is far too much beyond your control. The key is not torush into action until you figure out what is real and what isn't, patience is your friendthis week.

Letting go is easier said than done, especially for you Capricorn. There is an art insurrendering to the inevitable; an art in surrendering expectations toward certainoutcomes, there is simply an art in surrendering to anything at all. No one enjoysfeeling insecure but once you surrender you will feel an uplifting wind beneath yourwings giving you a taste of more personal freedom. The past is being rolled up sothere can be no turning back, the rules have finally changed.

Clarity has never felt so good. New chapters and new beginnings are here and youtoo are ready for one to begin. If you are not yet on your way, you are straddling thechange and preparing for launch but you won’t mind the wait, because you knowwhat lies ahead and you also know all that you have already survived. Someone isgoing to be instrumental in helping you break free from a certain hard piece of yourpast. A new path is loaded with peace and personal happiness.

All it takes at times is knowing that something is coming, that something isinevitable, for you to exercise whatever patience is required, peacefully andexpectantly. So if things are not perfect in your world today, if the pain has a wayof parking itself in your heart, then know and trust that just about everything inyour life could turn around come June. The time of sitting back and waiting forothers or certain circumstances to happen is almost over.

Ingredients: Beetroot & Chocolate Cake

Beetroot is both now in season and the ‘in thing’. The beetroot in this trendy chocolate cake helpskeep it fudgy and moist. This one has a cream cheese filling and a chocolate ganache to boot! This recipe sent to us by Ian Wooldridge, Head Chef at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey.

20 gr of cocoa powder250 gr of self-raising flour1 teaspoon of baking powder250 gr of caster sugar100 gr of dark chocolate, broken intosmall pieces200 gr of soft margarine250 gr of cooked (not pickled) beetroot(about 1 large beetroot), chopped4 large eggs, beaten200 gr of mascarpone cheese

60 gr of unsalted butter, soft200 gr of icing sugar, sifted200ml of double cream250 gr of dark chocolate, chopped &a little white chocolate, grated todecorate

First grease and line with parchment two21cm (8”) sponge tins. Into a large mixingbowl, sift the cocoa powder, flour and bakingpowder. Using another bowl (heat-proof glassor stainless steel) melt the chocolate andbutter together over a pan of hot, but notboiling water. Using a food processor, pureethe cooked beetroot and then whisk in thebeaten eggs. Now add the chocolate/buttermix and the beetroot/egg mix to the mixerbowl with the dry ingredients. Using a mixer, beat the combined mixtures togetherthoroughly on a slow speed. Then pour themixture, half & half into each tin. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4until when a knife inserted into the centre

comes out clean. Leave the cakes to stand inthe tins for 10 minutes before turning out on awire rack to cool. To make the filling, beattogether the mascarpone, butter and icingsugar. Spread on top of one of the cakes andplace the other cake on top so that the filling isin the middle. Finally, make the ganache to goon top. In a pan, bring the cream to justboiling and remove from the heat. Add thechopped chocolate and beat in vigorouslyuntil well combined and smooth. Allow tocool slightly, then spread on top of the cake.Leave to set. Decorate with some whitechocolate shavings or a decoration of yourchoice.

Burberry's affable Yorkshiremandesigner Christopher Bailey broughtthe fashion crowd to KensingtonGardens in London for the launch ofthe Burberry Prorsumautumn/winter 2012 collection.

The finale saw models hoistumbrellas as the roof of thetransparent show-tent was spatteredwith artificial rain from the outside, and confetti rained down insidemaking the whole show into awinter wonderland complete withsnow – pictured left.

Outside the show model RosieHuntington-Whiteley explained howmuch she enjoyed working forBurberry: "It's like working withfamily, Christopher is the best personI've ever met in my whole career andI just love working with him."

At the other end of the spectrum,McQ produced a reasonable dressthat, if it hadn’t had a mesh dishadded to the top (pictured far left),would be absolutely wearable to aparty but, add it they did, and it justlooked plain daft. If you fancy theactual dress though, take scissors tothe dish and get rid of it before yougo out.

Returning to the scene was StellaMcCartney with her first Londoncatwalk show in 16 years. After beinghired by the French label Chloé inher early 20s, McCartney has shownher collections on the Paris catwalks. The Stella McCartney label is now adecade old. But in a coup for LondonFashion Week, McCartney decided tocelebrate her role designing for TeamGB in this summer's Olympics withthis one-off return to London, presenting a collection of evening

wear. However, what was that dressshe had on at the party? The colourwas a beautiful midnight blue insatin but you will see that most ofthe pictures of her standing next toRhianna show the dress from theunderarms up only. This is becausethe rest of it seemed to stick out likea bag with absolutely no shapewhatsoever and, no, it wasn’t a “shift”style. One presenter when thephotographs first came to lightdescribed it as “a blue satin binbag –what is it supposed to be?!” Iremember when she first started outand saw a new collection in a flat inLondon, the dresses were supposedto be ‘50’s American Diner waitressstyle. They certainly were and I betyou could have bought them fromthe catering uniforms store in theWest End a damn sight cheaper too!Me, I’ll stick to Burberry’s chic stylethanks very much. Well done, Chris.

Vivienne speaks out...

The ever controversialVivienne Westwood is at itagain. This time she iscomplaining that youngerpeople “have never lookedso ugly” and has criticisedthe designers and shopsthat sell the clothes to theyoung for turning them into“clones”. “I don't noticeanybody unless they lookgreat, and every now andthen they do, and they areusually 70,” argued DameVivienne, herself aged 70. Isshe right? Do older peoplereally have a moreindividual style? Have a lookaround you next time you’re

out and about. Also, while we’re on the

subject of older women(that’s 50+) what about theirfootwear? I was at a party atthe Tamisa Golf Hotel(which, by the way has justre-opened after theirholidays) and couldn’t helpbut notice that we stillpretty much all went forhigh heeled beautifullycoloured and sparkly shoes. How lucky we are to live inSpain where they don’t costthe earth and, yes, the ladieswere elegant to the nthdegree. Girls, we’re still upthere with the best!

One for the menIt seems that now is thetime to have a go at themen for a change. Why is it that men seem

to think it’s OK to goaround all the time in a pairof jeans that look likethey’ve had them for thepast 50 years? They veryoften have the crotch downto the poor wearer’s knees(isn’t that a bit like trying towalk in a pencil skirt thatyou can hardly move in?).Guys, we wear them withgorgeous high heels andlook good in them – nottatty trainers!) and becausethey’ve slipped right down, they often have frayedbottoms too (the trousers, not the men). It’s just too easy for you

to pull on your much lovedtatty jeans and trainers but,if your female friendsturned out in the samething all the time, what

would you think? Tatty Batwould be one thing I’ll bet!A good, well fitting pair

of jeans can look great, especially with really goodshoes and a cashmerejumper at weekend forwalking round the shops orwith the dog along thepaseo or even in anightclub sometimes butthere are other things towear.Chinos, if they’re well

fitting, can look good with anice shirt and jacket (watchthose colour contraststhough lads) but a reallygood pair of trousers, eventweed, or a beautiful twilllooks even better. Then of course, there’s

the DJ dinner suit. Men, if itworks for James Bond, whywouldn’t it work for you?!Oh, and if you don’t knowwhat twill is, ask yourgirlfriend, wife or mother.

Rebecca sell-outtour 1st nightLast year’s X Factor runnerup Rebecca Fergusonsparkled in a floor lengthglittering white dress as shekicked off her sold-outdebut solo tour that kickedoff in Manchester city’sBridgewater Hall – the firstof a 14 venue tour that is toinclude London, Cardiffand her home town ofLiverpool.

The tour is named afterher double platinum sellingalbum Heaven and shesang a number of songsfrom the album includingher debut single Nothing'sReal But Love, which wasreleased last November, and peaked at number tenin the charts. Her soon-to-be-released new single TooGood Too Lose also wowedthe crowds.

After the show sheTweeted: 'Thank you. Had alovely time in Manchester. To bed for me, loveeveryone tonight, after oneglass of wine xx.'

On Monday, Rebeccarevealed that she almostdidn’t bother to go to the XFactor auditions but

decided to give stardomone last chance. She said: “Igot the e-mail from The XFactor asking me toaudition and I must admit,I’d forgotten that I’d appliedbecause I’d arrangedsomething else that day. Idecided to go but it wasmore by chance than I careto think about now!”

... and this time it would seem she’stalking a bit of sense for once

Viruses cannot replicateon their own; they musthijack other cells and turnthem into virusproduction factories. Thestudy showed how someparts of the immunesystem destroy their ownraw materials, stoppingHIV. HIV attacks theimmune system and can

weaken the body'sdefences to the point thateveryday infectionsbecome fatal. However, not all parts of theimmune system becomesubverted to the virus'cause. Macrophages anddendritic cells, which haveimportant roles inorchestrating the immune

response, seem to be moreresistant, and last yearresearchers identified theprotein SAMHD1 asplaying a vital part in thisresistance. They said thateven though they believethey know how it works, they cautioned that theywere not sure it could beused in therapy.

Parkinson'sbrain cellsmade in lab

Some cells in the body can repel attacks fromHIV by starving the virus of the building blocksof life, an international team of researchershave discovered.

Scientists in the US havesuccessfully made humanbrain cells in the lab thatare an exact replica ofgenetically causedParkinson's disease. Thebreakthrough means theycan now see exactly howmutations in the parkingene cause the disease inan estimated one in 10patients with Parkinson's. Italso offers a realistic modelto test new treatments on –a hurdle that has blightedresearch efforts until now.The researchers describedtheir work as a "game-changer". Studying humanneurons is critical inParkinson's disease sinceanimal models that lack theparkin gene do not developthe condition, renderingthem useless for thisresearch purpose.

Mars is coming back into viewagain after almost two years and

reaches it’s closest point to Earth onMarch 3rd when it will be 100 millionkm from us. Look to the east afterabout 9.00pm and you will see Marsshining like a very bright, red colouredstar.

The idea that Mars supported lifehas raged for centuries andMartian little green men have been thestaple of many a sci-fi movie or book.Eminent astronomers have alsohelped along the idea of Martian life. In1877 the Italian astronomer GiovanniSchiaparelli claimed to have observed‘canals’ criss-crossing the surface ofMars – he summarised that thesecanals were built by intelligentcreatures to carry water from the polaricecaps across the planet to dry desertareas. In 1895, American astronomerPercival Lowell published his book‘Mars and its Canals’, and he agreedthat the canals were the work of a long-gone civilisation. This idea led Britishwriter H. G. Wells to write ‘The War ofthe Worlds’ in 1897, telling of aninvasion by aliens from Mars.

Unfortunately Schiaparelli’s canalswere probably an optical illusion

as they have never been observedsince then. Mars is such a small worldand so far away that even through amodest sized telescope it rarely showsvery much more than a red coloureddisc and it takes some of the largesttelescopes to see any of the surfacedetails.

Mars is the second smallest planetin the Solar System, only Mercury

is smaller. But despite its size, Mars isthe one planet most like Earth. It hasfrozen icecaps at the north and southof the planet which shrink and growduring the Martian seasons. It has twotiny potato-shaped moons calledPhobos and Deimos which areprobably asteroids that were capturedby Mars’ gravity. And Mars also boaststhe tallest mountain in the SolarSystem; Olympus Mons is three timestaller than Mount Everest.

It has an atmosphere of mainlycarbon dioxide and traces of oxygen. The very definite red colour of Mars iscaused by iron in the Martian soiloxidising, literally turning rusty due tothe presence of oxygen in theatmosphere – and water. An orbiting

surveyor craft that is currentlymapping Mars in great detail hasdetected evidence of possibleunderground water deposits thatoccasionally seep out onto the surfaceof Mars causing deep ravines to becarved out. Canyons that dwarf eventhe Grand Canyon on Earth have beendiscovered running for many milesacross the surface and are clues toMars once being covered in oceansmillions of years ago.

Two NASA rovers called ‘Spirit’ and‘Opportunity’ have been drivingaround Mars and exploring the surfacefor almost 10 years now and have sentback amazing images of clouds, snowand even mini whirlwinds scurryingacross the Martian deserts. Frozen icehas been found just below the Martiansoil again pointing to a once very wetMars.

Anew rover called ‘Curiosity’ iscurrently on its way to Mars and isdue to land in August 2012. Curiosity isabout the size of a Volkswagen beetleand is the most advanced machineever. It is equipped with a multitude ofscientific instruments specificallydesigned to search not only for lifeliving there now, but whether life couldever have existed in the past. Bystudying the minerals trapped in theMartian soil it can be determinedwhether conditions were ever right foreven the most basic forms of single celllife to exist on Mars.

It’s pretty much agreed that a littlegreen Martian is unlikely to bephotographed skipping across thesurface on his way to the shops, butscientists are beginning to think thatthe answer to David Bowie’s questionis ‘probably, but a very long time ago’.

Your outlook on the World nOpinion & Comment 27the ewsn

I am wondering what sort ofstunt Iberdrola are playing!Last December I changed tothe company from Endesa, needless to say I was promisedthe earth – amongst their baitwas the fact that I would beable to speak to somebody in

English, and my bills would bein English. So here we are at the time formy first bill (they charge twomonthly), six days ago theytook money out of my bankaccount to the tune of 436euros – the amount wasacceptable to me becauseEndesa had not read my meterfor nine months and I hadbeen paying ridiculously lowbills. Thinking to myself, well surelyI will get my bill any day soon,to date I still haven't receiveda paper bill telling me howthey arrived at the 436 euros. So at a quarter to two today Itelephoned them and asked tospeak to somebody in English.A young lady said in brokenEnglish that English speaking

customer services was onlyavailable between 10 am and2 pm – so I reminded her thatit was only a quarter to two –"there is nobody here " shereplied. This company appear to beenrolling people onto theirbooks by telling porkies – in anutshell they are no betterthan Endesa. No, I do not live way out in thecampo, I live in the centre ofCoin and I have my maildelivered to my door five daysa week so obviously Iberdrolatook my money well beforethey have sent me a bill. What is so damned annoyingis that, as my dear motherwould have said, "Valeriethey've got you by the shortand curlies!"

40 years ago David Bowie famously sang ‘Is There LifeOn Mars?’ Back then we really didn’t know. Since thena flotilla of spacecraft have visited Mars to find out.

An SOS from SOS

We are sad to say that SOSAnimal Refuge has been onthe move.

We have complied with anotice to quit issued by thelocal council, which gave us10 days notice to vacate therefuge we had created inChurriana.

Unfortunately the land didnot have the necessarypermissions that we hadbeen led to believe existed.

One consequence of this isthat the Junta de Andaluciahas also issued us with a3,001 euro fine – therebyproving the old adage that itnever rains but it pours!

With much help fromvolunteers and other folk wesuccessfully vacated thepremises within the timelimit. It was a big job, andour dogs are now intemporary locations, including foster homes.

We have been searching for anew home, not made easy bythe fact that each council hasdifferent – and in somecases, well nigh impossible –conditions to meet.

While that search has beengoing on all our dogs havebeen safe and well cared for,and we have continued tosecure new loving homes forthem here in Spain, inSweden, Switzerland and inthe UK. We are hoping tofind a permanent locationsoon. In the meantime oursolicitor has appealedagainst the fine but with noexpectation of success –ignorance is no defencealthough it seems a shame toimpose a fine on a charitywhich was merely saving thelives of dogs – and which wasregularly visited by localpolice who brought dogs tous!

We need to raise as much aswe can to prepare for whenwe have to pay the fine soPLEASE, if you have anybric-a-brac, household and

kitchen goods or goodquality clothes that you nolonger need telephone us on665 682 919 or 605 227 155 –we will collect, and put theitems on our Sunday marketstall at La Trocha, Coin.

And of course, if anyone feelsable to make a financialdonation that would behugely appreciated – weknow that times are verytight for everyone, butliterally each euro doescount.

Thanks to all for theircontinued support and wehope to report more soon.

Bill Haas holed an unlikely43-foot birdie putt on thesecond playoff hole todefeat Phil Mickelson andKeegan Bradley and winthe Northern Trust Open.

After a 28-foot birdieputt from Mickelson and a13-footer from Bradley onthe 18th hole at Rivieraforced the playoff, Haasmade his long birdie try forhis fourth PGA Tour title. The reigning FedExCupchampion shot a two-under 69 in Sunday's finalround to get in at seven-under 277. Mickelson, whowas going for back-to-backvictories after his win atPebble last week, and PGAChampion Bradley bothhad even-par 71s.

"To beat a guy likeKeegan and also Phil, guysof their calibre, in a playoff,is amazing," said Haas.

"Something I'll neverforget."After three pars onthe first extra hole, thesame 18th whereMickelson and Bradleydisplayed magic putting

touches, it all came downat the 10th. Haas went firstand drained the longbirdie putt to put thepressure squarely on thethird-round co-leadersand good friends.Mickelson hit a poor

bunker shot and the ballstopped almost eight feetshort of the hole. He wasout and it was on thereigning PGA Champion'sshoulders. Bradleynarrowly missed his birdieeffort and the titlebelonged to Haas.

Spaniard Sergio Garciafired a best-of-the-week 64that included two eagles toshare fourth place at five-under with AmericansDustin Johnson (71) andJimmy Walker (69), andAustralian Jarrod Lyle (70).
