How’s your view?

Some years ago, I had a clinical supervisor who would often ask his clients, “How big is your rear view

mirror?” His point was that as we drive a car, the windshield is certainly much bigger than the rear

view mirror. Yet, he wondered, as we drive through life, do we look in the mirror or out the front

windshield? In other words, do we navigate life as though we’re looking primarily backwards or

looking to see what’s ahead? It’s a wonderful imagery, and a question worth asking in a variety of

ways.

July is often a time when we take some time to pause and look back. We celebrate our birth as a

nation, giving thanks for a rich history that has shaped us to be who we are today. We wave flags and

decorate our homes, all the while remembering our past. To be sure it hasn’t always been a grand and

glorious history, but one that has formed us to be who we are today. Hopefully we’ve learned

something along the way from both our sorrows and celebrations. We are a historical people deeply

rooted in a history that defines who we are today.

We are a historical people of faith as well. The Christian tradition is one of the few historical religions

in the world. Central to our faith is the belief that God has and does act in the course of human

history; events which shape and define us to be who we are.

As a nation, as a people of faith, individually, even as a church - one wonders if my supervisor’s

question isn’t something we should ask ourselves from time to time. How big is our rear-view mirror?

Do we look primarily to the past, hoping somehow to be able to see into the future? Remember

when? Or do we look forward, being informed by a rich history, but always looking ahead, knowing

that God will lead us forward?

Eugene Peterson, in his translation of the Bible called The Message puts it this way:

God, it seems you have been our home forever;

Long before the mountains were born,

Long before you brought earth itself to birth,

From “once upon a time” to “kingdom come”

– You are God.

SERVICE

BEAUTIFY THE CHURCH GROUNDS

Now through July 9, 2014

Help beautify our church grounds.

Show off the living décor God has blessed us with.

Volunteers are needed to pull weeds and trim hedges on

the church grounds before mulch is spread on July 9, 2014.

Our goal is to have the grounds prepped for the mulch by

July 4. Interested persons can do this at their own leisure

before the mulch delivery. Volunteers will be needed

again at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 9 to lay the mulch.

Any time that can be dedicated is greatly appreciated and

needed. Contact the church office if you are interested.

PARTICIPATE IN THE

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP SERVICE

innovation and two scriptures chosen by the pastor or

guest speaker. Contact the church office to set a date!

News From The Pews

THANK YOU

Thank you to everyone who helped with any

aspect of the rummage sale, whether it was

donating things, setting up, working the

event, taking down, or helping load the

unsold rummage onto the truck. We took in

$1,903.00. As they have been doing for

decades, the Mariners Class will make

donations on behalf of Good Shepherd and

will purchase things for the church. Please

keep in mind that the rummage sale is more

than just a fundraiser; it provides a low-

priced shopping opportunity for low-income

people, and is thereby a mission project. If

you have not yet been involved in the

rummage sale, you are invited to join the

rummage team.

- David Dieball

Thank you to all the members, visitors and

everyone who made my job at the church

during Julie's absence an enjoyable one. I

enjoyed getting to know many of you, and

appreciate the kindness, patience and help

that all of you gave me. I learned it takes

many to keep a church running smoothly,

and Good Shepherd has a wonderful "flock"

that does that. God Bless You all.

- Nancy Jones

Thank you to all the adult and youth

Vacation Bible School volunteers. I am so

blessed to have such a dedicated volunteer

group. Because of you the children

understand God's love for them and the true

meaning of Christian fellowship. It was a

pleasure spending a fun filled week serving

God with all of you.
