The Six Secret Formulae

“Excessive anger damages the liver, excessive joy damages the heart, excessive pensiveness damages the spleen, excessive sorrow damages the lungs, and excessive fear damages the kidneys." Also, “excessive anger causes Qi to rise, excessive joy causes Qi to retard, excessive sorrow causes Qi to diminish, excessive fear causes Qi to fall,

excessive shock cause Qi to scatter, and excessive pensiveness cause Qi to stagnate.” The Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic

The Six Healing Sounds are a simple and powerful tool for promoting physical, energetic, emotional healing and balance. Regular practice will help you to observe and become more aware of the energetic and emotional state of your internal organs. Ge Hong 葛洪 (283-343) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420) wrote: "Those who know the real meaning of breathing can enjoy the proper internal circulation of Qi for the health, and those who know the ways to apply strength and the ways to relax can expect a long life". The Term Liù Zi Jue 六字訣 first appears in a book called 'On Caring for the Health of the Mind and Prolonging the Life Span' written by Tao Hongjing 陶弘景 (456-536) of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420 - 589). Zou Pu'an of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) was a major contributor in terms of theory and practice to the transmission of the exercise through his book 'The Supreme Knack for Health Preservation - Six Character Approach to Breathing Exercises'. An authoritative work on the subject is Ma Litang's (1905 - 1989) 'Liù Zi Jue Health and Fitness Exercises for clinical application'. The theoretical basis of 'The Six Healing Sounds' exercises is in line with the ancient theories intrinsic to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the five phases and the five solid organs. When specific sounds are made the syllables resonate with a frequency tuned to specific internal organ and energy systems. This harmony allows fresh energy to freely flow to the organs and energy systems, opening the meridians and expelling stagnant and toxic energy. The vibrations open the meridians, expel stagnant Qì 氣, receive fresh Qì 氣, and restore balance. The old is exhaled and the new is inhaled.

Poem of the Six Healing Sounds Tao Hongjing 陶弘景 (456-536)

One should take air in through the nose and let it out slowly through the mouth... There is one way of drawing breath in and six ways of expelling breath out. The six ways of expelling breath are represented by the syllables XU, HE, HU, SI, CHUI, XI The six ways of exhalation can cure illness: to expel heat, one uses CHWAY; to expel cold, one uses HOO; to relieve tension, use SHEE; to release anger, use HER; to display malaise, use HSU; and to regain equilibrium, use SSS..
