The TMS Writing Center is not going away over the summer! My

son and I plan to spend a fair amount of time writing, and so should all of you. As a result, I intend to have several things going on this summer with the TMS Writing Cen-ter to get us set up for next year.

1) Summer Writing Contest - I'm hoping to see some first rate fiction, poetry, and non-fiction writing from some TMS students this summer. If you write something good, include your name, your grade, and the date and send it to me with an e-mail that says "TMS Summer Writing Contest."

I have plenty of $5 and $10 gift cards left to use as prizes. I'll an-nounce winners at the first meeting of the TMS Writing Center next year.

2) On-line Writing and Publishing - The Google Classroom that was in use at the beginning of the year will remain up and running, and students are free to use it to work on whatever kind of writing they would like to do. You can post stories or ideas for fiction or non-fiction writing, including possible contest entries or things you might like to publish in the TMS Times.

Send me an e-mail if you want to join the discus-sion:[email protected]

3) TMS Times - The Times won't go away either! Students can still

submit articles to me by e-mail, and I will pass them on to the news-paper's editors for inclusion in the newspaper. One student has already pledged to do an article about the best destinations in the area for a tasty frozen treat. Other ideas for articles that I would love to run:

1) Profiles of how teachers, or a teacher, spends the summer.

2) An article about good summer reading for young adults. (Not that stuff that grown-ups recommend, necessarily, but stuff that's actually really good.)

3) Articles about summer programs that TMS students are involved in.

4) An article about the temperatures this summer, and maybe how they are affected by global warming.

Photos and illustrations are also needed, for articles you submit or articles that are al-ready posted but lacking artwork. They do have to be well staged and generally awesome to be used, though. See you next year!! Tom Conway English 7

Attention parents and students: Every math student has a summer math log or packet that they need to complete for next school year. Please visit the Thornburg website and you will find links under the Students tab, labeled Summer Stuff Packet. Each grade level has their own packet to complete: Upcoming 6th graders - Math 6 Log Upcoming 7th graders - Math 7 Log Upcoming 8th graders - Algebra Topics 8 Log Upcoming MSI students - MSI Log Upcoming MSII students - MSII Log Upcoming Algebra students - Algebra I Packet Upcoming Geometry students

- None All completed logs or packets are due on the first day of your child's math class next school year.

STUDENT PICK UP REMINDERS

The policy for after school pick up of students is that all students must be picked up at parent pick up by the dismissal bell, which is 2:45 pm on a normal school day and 11:45 am on the half days, unless they are staying after school for an activity. If your student(s) is/are staying after school for an activity then they must be picked up at the end of that activity. This policy will be implemented for the 2015-2016 school year. All students not picked up will be placed in the cafeteria for pick up and will be under the guidance of the Assistant Principal. Please make every effort to pick up your student(s) at the scheduled pick up time. If you are unable to pick your stu-dent(s) up on time, please make alternate transportation arrangements for you student(s) before the dismissal bell. If you have opted for parent pick up in lieu of the bus, you may want to reconsider having your students assigned to the bus if the dismissal time proves to be problematic with your schedule. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

FBLA: All students who are taking a computer class this

year with Mrs. Moore (Computer Concepts 1, Computer

Concepts 2, Digital Input Technology) are eligible to join the

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club. This is a

great club to get your child involved in community activities,

volunteering, fundraising for the needy, and learning to be a

great citizen and in the corporate world. Please contact

Mrs. Moore if interested or for more information @

Dear Parents of Spotsylvania County Middle School Athletes,

In the fall of 2015, Spotsylvania County Public Schools will require that each student pay a non

-refundable athletic fee of $75 for each sport in which he or she is a confirmed member. Athletes that

tryout and become an official team member will be required to pay the athletic fee prior to the first offi-

cial contest in order to be eligible to compete. Fees collected will contribute to the Spotsylvania County

Public Schools’ budget to assist with coaching stipends, equipment, supplies, and transportation costs.

The decision for playing time by athletes is the sole decision of the head coach and his/her staff.

The fee will be waived for students that qualify for economically disadvantaged status. Eligibil-

ity for economically disadvantaged status must be documented at the school level. Athletic fees will

be paid to Thornburg Middle School prior to every athletic season. TMS will communicate the fee col-

lection night prior to each athletic season.

The Fall collection night will be Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 5:00-6:00 pm. If you have

any questions, please contact Lisa Winn at TMS.

IMPORTANT CONCUSSION INFORMATION

The concussion education requirements for student athletes have CHANGED. There is a new education process

that has been implemented by Spotsylvania County at the middle and high school levels. Concussion education

must now be completed BEFORE a student can even try out for a team. It must be on file with the athletic physi-

cal in order for a student to begin try outs. Here is the URL for the online training:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jSee-ZWAFSiuFGghFQYQ54oF8cjzllmHYwuv1LR88gQ/viewform?

usp=send_form

We will also be posting opportunities for live trainings over the summer and on Business Day here at

TMS. Please plan to look for this information on our website over the next few weeks if you prefer an in person

training.

Please be aware that Fall try outs for Football, Girl's Soccer and Girl's Basketball begin the first day of

school. Students must have a Complete four page VHSL physical and verified concussion training to begin

try outs.

If you have questions, please contact Lisa Winn@[email protected].

2015-2016 ATHLETICS Fall sports try outs start the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. Those interested in trying out for Football, Girl's Soccer and Girl's must have a complete 4 page VHSL Physical form on file with Mrs. Winn no later than the first day of school. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy. Forms can be printed from the school website. They are 4 pages long. Parents and students fill out page 1,2 and 4. The doctor's office signs off on page 2 and fills out page 3. Bringing in JUST what the doctor fills out is NOT a complete physi-cal. If a student does not have health insurance, scholastic insurance must be purchased for as low as $9. Students without health insurance information or verification of Scholastic Insurance cannot try out. This addressed on page 4 of the physical form. If a student does not have the emergency contact information filled out and signed by a parent or guardian, he/she can-not start try outs. This is also addressed on page 4 of the physical form. Physicals must be dated by the doctor after May 1, 2015. Physicals before May 1 have expired. If your insurance will not allow a physical appointment to be made that meets these requirements, there are many walk in clinics that do sports physicals for about the same cost as a co-pay. There are no exceptions made to this policy. NEW THIS YEAR … CONCUSSION EDUCATION MUST TAKE PLACE BEFORE TRY OUTS. You must take the online training that can be found on our school web page, or you must take a live training at one of the times advertised on our website. You will not print forms and submit them. The online training will send a verification to the school once complete, and the instructor of the live training will send your name directly to the school as well. This is a county requirement so there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy. If you have questions regarding fall sports, please contact Mrs. Winn at [email protected]. There will also be a sports meeting on Business Day that all parents of athletes should plan to attend. We will address grade requirements, be-havior requirements, general guidelines for games and practices and the athletic fee at that time.

The Athletics Information Meeting will be held on Business Day from 6:30 to 7 pm in the Forum.

Page 8: Thornburg Middle School Parent Newsletter Middle School Parent Newsletter ... site, as well as the TMS webpage. Questions? ... strument for your child based upon their preference and

MEDICATION POLICY Students who take medication (prescription or over-the-counter) prescribed by a physician must obtain a Medica-

tion Request Form. The form must be completed and signed by a parent and physician. There forms are available

in the clinic and in the Main Office. All medication (with the exception of some asthma medication) must be kept

in the clinic and administered by the nurse or designated staff member. According to School Board Policy, any

students who possess, take, or distribute any type of medication outside of the clinic will be subject to disci-

plinary action. If you have any concerns or need to discuss medical questions, please contact the nurse, Mrs.

Stephanie Bradner, at 582-7600 X6619. It is recommended that parents bring medication before school

opens rather than sending it with the student on the bus. Medication may also be brought to the clinic

during the “Back-to-School Business Day” on September 3, 2015.

FOOD ALLERGIES...HELPFUL INFORMATION

School Environment

Food allergies are a particular concern in the school environment. Studies show that 16%–18% of children with

food allergies have had allergic reactions to accidental ingestion of food allergens while in school.7,8 Moreover,

food-induced anaphylaxis data reveals that 25% of anaphylaxis reactions in schools occur among students without

a previous food allergy diagnosis.7,9

Common allergens

Eight types of food are responsible for more than ninety percent of allergic reactions. These foods are: milk, eggs,

peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Non-food items, such as arts and craft materials, may contain

trace amounts of these foods. There is no cure for food allergy, and strict avoidance is the only way to prevent a

reaction. Other allergic reactions are known to occur from insect venom (e.g., bee stings), medications, and latex.

An allergic reaction can occur within minutes or up to hours upon exposure.

breathing and swelling of the throat and tongue. Anaphylaxis can result in death.

Symptoms of Food Allergy

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to food can range from mild to sudden and severe and commonly include one or

more of the following7:

Hives; Tingling in the mouth; Swelling in the tongue and throat; Difficulty breathing; Abdominal cramps; Vom-

iting or diarrhea; Eczema or rash; Coughing or wheezing; Loss of consciousness; Dizziness

Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe allergic reaction that involves various areas of the body simultaneously or causes

difficulty.

Sharing Food with Students

Please be sure to include a list of ingredients with any food items you send to school with the intent to share with

the students and staff members. Send purchased, pre-packaged food items that are nut free would be the best op-

tion. Please see list of suggestions on the next page.

Tdap Requirements for parents of rising 6th graders

All sixth grade students are required by Virginia law to receive a booster teta-nus‐diphtheria‐pertussis (Tdap) vaccine prior to en- tering school on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. The Tdap vaccine can be obtained free of charge by appointment at the Spotsyl-vania County Health Department. The Health De- partment's telephone number is 507‐7400. A private health care provider may also be contacted for this vaccine; fees may be charged. The Tdap vaccine and any other immunizations mandated by law can be obtained free of charge at the Spotsylvania County Health Department, 2

nd floor of the Holbert Building, 9104 Court-

house Road, Spotsylvania. The Spotsylvania County Health Department’s telephone number is (540) 507-7400. Immunization clinics are held every Monday 8:00 a.m. until noon. An appointment is not needed.
