Who should be responsible for archiving (long term preservation) e- journals? Publishers and libraries̶the central parties to this issue̶rather than third-party organizations, have teamed up and encouraged related organizations around the world to realize CLOCKSS. The workshop introduces its activities and vision, and how it will be expanded in Japan.
What power do information infrastructures have? Our lives change every day because of the power of information. External experts and researchers at NII will discuss what kind of advancement there could be in the near future, and how the activities of NII can contribute to that advancement.

Scilab is currently used in educational and industrial environments around the world. Scilab language is made for easily performing linear algebra and matrix computations. It allows making 2-D, 3-D graphics, and animation.
Scilab works under Windows XP/Vista/Seven, GNU/Linux, and MacOSX
In the presentation we will briefly present Scilab software, in particular the new Scilab 5.2 release which includes Xcos, the block diagram modeler and simulator for hybrid dynamic systems. We will also present the structure in charge of Scilab and mainly its development model that can be applied to other free software, answering the question: how can such free software survive?

Ken-ichi KAWARABAYASHI Why can we get very quick updated information from Car navigation systems (using GPS)?? This is partially because road map has a planar structure.In this talk, we will survey recent progress on theoretical aspect of planar network, and its applications to date update.

Hiroshi HOSOBEIn software development, we ordinarily specify how to solve a problem by computer. Therefore, a more complex problem makes software development more difficult, and also causes a higher possibility of errors. In constraint programming, we develop software by declaring the conditions that should be satisfied by the answer of a problem, instead of how to solve the problem. In this talk, we overview constraint programming technology and its applications, as well as showing our research results.

Mayumi BONOInformation technology has changed many aspects of the daily interactions experienced by deaf people in Japan. For instance, text-messaging services such as those provided by pocket beepers and mobile phones allow deaf individuals to travel at their own discretion rather than wait at home for fax responses. Indeed, the development of telecommunication technologies is expected to increase the opportunities available for deaf individuals to participate in social activities using their mother tongue, Japanese Sign Language (JSL). The goals of this research project involve: (1) establishing a cooperative information environment in which deaf and hearing people can come together to discuss important issues, and (2) formulating organizational guidelines that enable this environment to be maximally useful for all participants.

Does Internet narrowpolitical knowledge gap?
Tetsuro KOBAYASHI It is widely known that political knowledge promotes political participation. It underpins the importance of whether Internet use narrows or widens the existing political knowledge gap. Using a representative survey data of Tokyo metropolitan area collected right after 2009 HOR election, I show some empirical evidences that Internet use increases the level of political knowledge especially among less politically interested people, which contributes to narrowing political knowledge gap.

NII provides academic cloud computing services which we can use with enough amounts of computer resources anytime and anywhere for research and education. Additionally, we provide physical space as an IT laboratory for creation of innovative future software integrating virtual services and physical services. In this presentation, we illustrate how to use the academic services to create future software.

Grammar as aMathematical Object
Makoto KANAZAWAThe mathematical study of grammars started in the 1950s for the dual purposes of describing human languages and of specifying the syntax of programming languages, but for the next 30 years or so was almost exclusively studied by computer scientists without much regard to its linguistic origin. About 20 years ago, the multiple context-free grammar was introduced to overcome the limitations of context-free grammar in describing some natural language constructions. Some important mathematical properties of this grammar formalism have only recently been uncovered. I will sketch some recent developments and open problems in this area.

Video content-based retrieval is indispensable to access necessary information from broadcast videos or video archives in the internet. We are addressing video content-based retrieval for large-scale video archives via automatic extraction of video content information using video semantic analysis. This requires to solve so-called the bridging the semantic gap, which is known to be very challenging task, and we are tackling this issue using several techniques including image analysis, machine learning, and information retrieval. We will demonstrate our video search engine enabled by our research outcome.

We propose a method to stop the re-shooting of pictures and videos displayed on screens using digital camcorders. Conventional digital watermarking technique involves embedding content ID into images and videos which helps to identify the place and time where the actual content was shot. However, digital watermarking technology does not control reshooting of digital content using camcorders. The proposed method is to stop re-shooting of pictures and videos by corrupting the recorded content by adding invisible noise signal using CCD or CMOS devices during recording. In this way, recorded content will be unusable. To validate the result of this proposed method, we developed a functional prototype system for the re-shooting prevention and implemented it on a 100-inch cinema screen.

Intelligent Transport System (ITS) strategies can significantly reduce CO2 emissions of vehicles. However, there is currently no low-cost yet effective method to investigate the impact of energy-saving ITS measures on driving behavior. Further, there is no convenient collaboration platform to compare the results of such “green” ITS strategies at an international level. Therefore, we implemented OpenEnergySim, an online multi-user three-dimensional (3D) simulation space, which can serve two functions in one single consistent environment: (1) visualization of microscopic traffic and CO2 emissions, and (2) immersive driving of users in a simulated traffic network, where ITS measures can be applied and tested interactively. OpenEnergySim can provide a unique platform for green ITS which fosters international collaboration and facilitates harmonization of models in the transport domain. We closely collaborate with the Advanced Mobility Research Center (ITS Center), Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo.

OpenScienceSim hosts examples of collaborative visualization and data exploration in the areas of molecular science and astrophysics, based on the 3D Internet. The 3D Internet is an infrastructure for real-time, live collaboration in distributed online 3D virtual worlds. The presented applications use OpenSimulator open source server software as the simulation environment. The demo will showcase the key role of NII's Cyber Science Infrastructure (CSI), in particular its grid capabilities, based on NAREGI, for generating simulations in the field of molecular dynamics. Our demo aims to implement the notion of "democratization of e-Science", where anyone can easily benefit from a HPC environment, from anywhere, anytime. In addition, we show the integration of BALLView, a popular single-user software for molecular modeling and dynamics, and OpenScienceSim. The unique aspect of our framework is that it allows one to experience the results of supercomputing interactively and immersively in the virtual world. OpenScienceSim is developed in collaboration with NII’ NAREGI team, the National Astronomical Observatory in Japan, and the Center for Bioinformatics at Saarland University.

In brain research, it is important to correlate the neural networks and areas in the brain with their activities. By using Zebrafish as a vertebrate model, specific structures, regions or neural networks inside of the brain are genetically labeled and visualized based on gene expression patterns since many genes are expressed in such restricted areas in the brain. The result of this process is a series of pictures, in which cross sections of the brain are shown and specific areas are highlighted. These pictures serve as the medium for research discussion and annotation. However, by using such a method only, it is difficult to determine the 3D boundary of the region of interest and much more difficult to share the results of those analyses with other experts to deepen discussion. To solve these two issues, we propose the use of virtual worlds as a platform for displaying 3D representations of Zebrafish brain in a virtual space, thereby allowing researchers to discuss the results in real time.

The OpenBSLab (Open Bio-safety Lab) is a virtual environment for learning to handle hazardous substances in a Bio-safety Lab (BSL), which is being developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). Handling and management of pathogens are an important part of basic infectious disease education, which is required for further strengthening the response capability to bio-terror crises in recent years. It has been pointed out that specialized education of bio-risk management is necessary for handling infectious specimens in clinical practice and for researchers who conduct study on these specimens. Internationally, the establishment of education that fosters the ability to properly manage bio-risk is required for experimenters to continue research activities in perfect environments. Focusing on case studies of accidents and near misses, we developed OpenBSLab (Open Bio-safety Lab), an interactive immersive environment based on the 3D Internet (virtual worlds), which implements a self-learning method and is available anytime from anywhere.

With rapidly growing online sources aimed at encouraging and stimulating people’s discussions concerning public or social issues (news, blogs, discussion forums, etc.), there is a great need in development of computational tool for the analysis of people’s attitudes (emotions, judgments, appreciations). We are proposing a novel compositional approach aimed at automatic analysis of attitudes conveyed through text. To deeply analyze the attitude type, its strength, and confidence level of the expressed statement, the system relies on the compositionality principle, the rules elaborated for semantically distinct verb classes, and lexicon of sentiment-conveying terms, functional words, modifiers, and modal expressions. The method is capable of processing sentences of different complexity, including simple, compound, complex (with complement and relative clauses), and complex-compound sentences. This work is developed in collaboration with the University of Tokyo.

We show a framework to discover unknown patterns, laws, and information from databases using logic-based Artificial Intelligence. Given a new observation, it is necessary to make a hypothesis that is accommodated to the existing knowledge. If such a hypothesis can, together with the background theory, logically derive the observation,
we can consider it as a possible explanation. In this research, we will clarify the principle of hypothesis formation and apply it to discovery of scientific knowledge. In particular, we aim at finding new rules in systems biology. Here we demonstrate our approaches to analyze metabolic pathways of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli.

We propose stable , fast , and memory-efficient algorithms for large-scale, ill-conditioned or
rank-deficient least squares problems. Our techniques employ Krylov subspace iterative methods as the outer iteration, and perform inner i terat ions as ‘precondit ioning’ in order to accelerate the convergence. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method is faster than previous methods.

Traditional clustering-based data discovery tools often fail when the data sets are very large or have many attr ibutes , or have performance parameters that are very difficult to tune in practice. We have developed a novel formulation for partitional data clustering that overcomes many of these difficulties, based on the generic Relevant Set Correlation (RSC) model. The new model,
GlobalRSC, resembles the famous K-means clustering heuristic, but with a shared-neighbor similarity measure instead of the Euclidean distance. Unlike K-means and most other clustering heuristics that can only work with real-valued data and distance measures taken from specific families, GlobalRSC has the advantage that it can work with any distance measure, and any data representation.

Similarity queries typically result in disk access latency and incur a substantial computational cost. We propose an “active caching” technique for ranked list queries that is capable of synthesizing query results from cached
information even when the required result list is not explicitly stored in the cache. Our solution is based on shared-neighbor similarity measures, which assess the strength of the relationship between two objects as a function of the number of other objects in the common intersection of their neighborhoods.

independently. How to propagate modifications correctly across models in different formats and guarantee system consistency remains an open problem. This work aims to solve this problem based on bidirectional model transformation. UnCAL. Given a transformation and a schema describing structural constraints that the output should satisfy, our algorithm statically verifies that any input graph is always converted to a graph satisfying the output schema.

It has been considered difficult to realize in a systematic manner in the development process to compose larger transformation from small transformations and propagating modification to the model in both direction (not only
from source to destination but also backwards), due to the complexity in the process. We cope with this problem by bidirectionalizing an existing graph transformation language that is already compositional and has clear formal semantics. We added several syntax that are useful to describe primitive operations on graphs like replacing subgraph.

Fusion is a known technique for el iminating unnecessar y intermediate results that are created but then consumed during computation. Being useful for query optimization for many query languages such as SQL, fusion remains as a challenge for XQuery optimization. This is because XQuery has more complicated semantics; it is context sensitive and requires preservation of document order.In this presentation, we propose, as far as we are aware, the first XQuery fusion that can deal with both the document
order and the context of XQuery expressions. More specifically, we carefully design a context representation of XQuery expressions based on the Dewey order encoding, develop a context-preserving XQuery fusion for ordered trees by static emulation of the XML store, and prove that our fusion is correct. Our XQuery fusion has been implemented and successfully applied to the multi-step schema mapping, in which fusion is particularly necessary for reducing execution cost of redundant node creations.

This research focuses on the utilization of eye-tracking data in investigating how people read an academic paper and mathematical expressions in it. We study the difference of reading styles depending on the contents or layouts of the paper and analyze the usage of
surrounding information. We also introduce some of the related techniques: automatic recognition of gazed characters using OCR, and personalization based on compression distance. Additionally, we discuss the possibility of extending the idea to other media such as comics.

We present a method for range image registration of specular objects devoid of salient geometric properties under complex lighting environment. We propose to use illumination consistency on two range images to detect specular highlights, which are used to obtain diffuse reflection components. By using light information estimated from the specular highlights and the diffuse reflection components, we extract photometric features invariant to changes
in pose and illumination, even under unknown complex lighting environment. We then robustly register the two range images using these features . This technique can handle var ious k ind of illumination situations and can be applied to a wide range of materials . Our experiments using synthetic data show the effectiveness, the robustness and the accuracy of our proposed method.

Information technology has changed many aspects of the daily interactions experienced by deaf people in Japan. For instance, text-messaging services such as those provided by pocket beepers and mobile phones allow deaf individuals to travel at their own discretion rather than wait at home for fax responses. Indeed, the development of telecommunication technologies is expected to increase the opportunities available for deaf individuals to
participate in social activities using their mother tongue, Japanese Sign Language (JSL). The goals of this research project involve: (1) establishing a cooperative information environment in which deaf and hearing people can come together to discuss important issues, and (2) formulating organizational guidelines that enable this environment to be maximally useful for all participants.

■Connecting the world with immersive video communication - research on video compression and wireless transport

Due to exploding popularity of portable yet powerful devices like smart phones and Apple's iPad, it is forecasted that traffic to wireless devices (bulk of in being video-based services) will increase 66 folds by 2013. At the same time, new immersive video communication systems, using images captured synchronously by multiple cameras at different viewpoints, have promised exciting interactive experiences for users, but at the cost of significantly larger encoding rate. The
technical challenge is hence how to compress multi-dimensional video and transport them over wireless networks to provide new immersive video communication services anywhere. In this research, we investigate solutions for this challenge in three vectors; i) efficient 3D video compression for depth-image-based rendering (DIBR); ii) cooperative peer-to-peer repair (CPR) for video communication; and iii) video customization for interactive video experience.

NII-Speech Resources Consortium (SRC) and related organizations have created and distributed various speech corpora. In order for users to utilize various corpora easily, we propose a new classification method based on corpus attributes which show corpus characteristics. It analyzes and visualizes the relationship and similarities mostly among Japanese speech corpora and tries to visualize speech corpora needed by the users.

National Institute of Informatics launches a new web service, Researchmap, in 2009. Researchmap is an information sharing platform for the researchers. The user of Researchmap obtains three virtual spaces of the different access levels. The first one is called“My Portal”which can be used as his/her homepage. The second one is called“My Room”which is meant for his/her virtual private space which is not accessible by anyone else. The last one is called
“Community”which can be used as collaborative working/learning space with other member researchers. Researchmap provides more than 30 portlet applications including Curriculum Vitae, Weblog, Cabinet and Video Sharing. The user can arrange the portlet applications on a given page by drag-and-drop manner: the user can arrange them intuitively just as he/she arranges his/her room to express himself/herself.

Based on the previous findings that mobile phone texting increases the homogeneity of personal networks among youth, it may be possible that the heavy use of mobile phone texting among peers limit the scope of “most people” to intimate friends, which makes the level of trust seemingly high. On the basis of these concern,
using a nationally representative survey data of Japanese youth(8 to 18 yrs old; n=1002, RR=59%), I will present some findings about how mobile phone texting can correlate with social trust through limiting the scope of general others (“most people” in social trust scale) into narrower circles.

When we speak spontaneously, we sometimes produce disfluent utterances unwittingly. Disfluency is not unique to speech, however. It can be observed with gesture, too. In this study, we focused on special type of disfluency called microslips, and we
examined when they occurred in social interaction. The results of preliminary analysis suggest that microslip occurs 1)when the speaker changes direction of the gaze, and 2) when s/he changes the view point of gesture.

The current web search engines are highly effective for navigational queries which intend to reach particular web pages that the users have in mind. However, due to their use of simple boolean retrieval models, they are poorly effective for informational queries which intend to acquire some information concerning certain topics assumed to be present on one or more web pages. In order to
support informational queries it is crucial to adopt content-based retrieval models which have been studied extensively in the IR research area and have been shown to be highly effective for informational queries, although time-consuming and expensive. We aim to propose a method to improve the efficiency of those models to the extent that they can be adopted in web search engines.

The National Institute of Informatics (NII) has been working with universities across Japan to advance the development of a consistent authentication and authorization infrastructure. This will allow university members to use their Academic content, campus wireless LAN network, etc. in safe and secure manner.
Through the pilot operation in 2009, we are now operating the access management federation on the prodiction level. The federation enable us to experience the SSO to academic resources by employing the shibboleth middleware.
