Epistle: A reading from the Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans (6: 18 - 23) Brothers! Freed from your sin, you became slaves of justice. (I use the following example from human affairs because of your weak hu-man nature.) Just as formerly you enslaved your bodies to impurity and licentiousness for their degradation, make them now the servants of justice for your sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you had freedom from jus-tice. What benefit did you then enjoy? Things you are now ashamed of, all of them tending toward death. But now that you are freed from sin and have become slaves of God, your ben-efit is sanctification as you tend toward eternal life. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Alleluia Verses: In You, O Lord, have I hoped that I may not be put to shame for ever.

Be a protector unto me, O God, and a house of refuge to save me.

Gospel: Matthew 8: 5 - 13 At that time as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him with this request: “Sir, my serving boy is at home in bed para-lyzed, suffering painfully.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” “Sir,” the centurion 7


Хтось скаже: як можна примиритися із сусідом, який не те що не вибачився досі за минулі кри-вди, а й знову атакує та сіє в нашому домі спу-стошення і смерть? Однак прощення зовсім не означає схвалення дій кривдника чи потурання його злочинам. Прощення означає перемогу над ворогом у власному серці через недопу-щення до власного нутра сліпої ненависті й бажання помсти. Милосердя і справедливість не суперечать одне одному, а радше зумовлю-ють і доповнюють одне одного, щоб осягнути в досконалій любові свій найвищий вимір. Влуч-но висловився про це святий Папа Іван Павло ІІ у Посланні з нагоди Дня миру 2002 року: «Немає миру без справедливості, немає спра-ведливості без прощення».

А далі пояснив це своє твердження так: «Оскільки людська справедливість є завжди крихкою і недосконалою, податливою на обме-ження та людські егоїзми, її слід здійснювати й певною мірою доповнювати прощенням, яке зцілює рани і відновлює до глибин порушені людські взаємини. Це стосується як напру-жень між поодинокими людьми, так і конфлік-тів загального характеру, зокрема й міжнаро-дних. Пробачення жодною мірою не супере-чить справедливості, бо воно полягає не в тому, щоб занехаювати слушні вимоги, а в тому, щоб виправити порушений лад. Проба-чення радше прагне повної справедливості, що провадить до спокійного ладу, який є не так нетривалим і тимчасовим припиненням військових дій, як ґрунтовним зціленням кри-вавих душевних ран. Для такого зцілення од-наково важливі і справедливість, і пробачен-ня».

Після відновлення на наших землях справедливого миру ми маємо пройти шлях довершення примирення через милосердя і прощення нашим ворогам. Тільки такий мир буде тривалим, і тільки з ним ми зможемо бу-дувати цивілізовані стосунки з нашими сусіда-ми. Почати крокувати цим шляхом слід уже тепер, молячись про мир, захищаючи мир, ба-жаючи творити мир у своєму народі й між наро-дами. (продовження буде… )

Someone might say: how can you become rec-onciled with your neighbor who not only has not apologized for the wrongs of the past but is at-tacking anew and is wreaking havoc and death in our home? However forgiveness does not mean condoning the actions of the wrongdoer or his crimes. Forgiveness means being victo-rious over the enemy in your own heart by not allowing a blind hatred and a feeling of revenge into your being. Mercy and justice do not con-tradict each other but rather contribute to and complement each other, so as to attain perfect love in its highest dimension. Pope John Paul II very aptly put this in perspective as he marked the Day of Peace in 2002: “There is no peace without justice, and no justice without for-giveness.” Further he explained his statement as follows: “But because human justice is always fragile and imperfect, subject as it is to the limi-tations and egoism of individuals and groups, it must include and, as it were, be completed by the forgiveness which heals and rebuilds trou-bled human relations from their foundations. This is true in circumstances great and small, at the personal level or on a wider, even interna-tional scale. Forgiveness is in no way opposed to justice, as if to forgive meant to overlook the need to right the wrong done. It is rather the fullness of justice, leading to that tranquility of order which is much more than a fragile and temporary cessation of hostilities, involving as it does the deepest healing of the wounds which fester in human hearts. Justice and forgiveness are both essential to such healing. .”

After we regain just peace in our land, we have to perfect reconciliation by showing mercy and forgiveness to our enemies. Only then will peace be permanent and only then will be able to build civilized relations with our neighbors. It is imperative that we start to walk this path im-mediately, praying for peace, defending peace, seeking to speak and to promote peace in our own nation and among other nations.

Заклик до поєднання і примирення У Святому році Божого милосердя слід

також просити в Господа ласки зміцнення на-шої національної єдності через працю над внутрішньоукраїнським примиренням і поєд-нанням. Наші вороги впродовж історії не раз намагалися розділити українську землю, розс-варити і роз’єднати наш народ. Якщо їм це вдавалося, народ у своїх визвольних змаган-нях зазнавав поразки, а держава потрапляла в занепад і руїну.

Нам слід пройти до кінця важкий, але визвольний шлях пізнання історичної правди, щоб звільнитися від накинених нам чужинця-ми штампів, від ідеологічних нашарувань та історичних стереотипів минулого. Водночас ми маємо плекати в собі такі громадянські чесноти, як повага одне до одного, пошану-вання гідності кожної без винятку людини, щирість і зичливість у взаєминах, щоб таким чином вибудовувати мости довіри і єднання всюди, де ворог намагається закладати вибу-хівку упереджень, недовіри й нетерпимості одне до одного.

До цього спонукають нас і нинішні дра-матичні події в Україні. Щоправда, соціологи стверджують, що за останній рік нечувано зросла згуртованість українського суспільства і відчуття єдності в нашому народі. Одначе єдність, щоб бути тривалою, не може ґрунту-ватися лише на консолідації перед лицем не-безпеки та зовнішньої загрози. Вона має ба-зуватися на глибших і міцніших фундаментах, якими є почуття солідарності, відповідаль-ність за спільну спадщину предків, вдячність за приналежність до великого духом і благо-родного у своїх прагненнях народу.

Ще важливішим і, мабуть, важчим є примирення між народами. Цей заклик для нас, українців, є актуальним як ніколи раніше. Може, хтось скаже, що говорити про прими-рення під час війни ще надто рано, не на часі. Адже до давніх і ще не очищених взаємним прощенням та примиренням історичних ран додалися нові несправедливості, нові кривди.

PASTORAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE YEAR OF GOD’S

MERCY (continued from last week)

A call for unity and reconciliation In this holy Year of God’s mercy we should all ask our Lord for grace to strengthen our na-tional unity by working on our domestic internal reconciliation of Ukraine. Throughout history our enemies sought to divide Ukraine’s lands and to create animosity and disunity among our people. When they were successful in doing this, the Ukrainian people were defeated in their struggle for liberty and the Ukrainian state fell into decay and ruin. We must accept the difficult challenge of understanding historical truth so as to free our-selves from the foreign stereotypes that are forced upon us, and from many layers of ideologi-cal and historical stereotypes of the past. At the same time we need to foster civic virtues like re-spect for one another, respect for the dignity of every single person and courtesy in relationships so as to build bridges of trust and unity wherever our enemy is trying to lay explosives of prejudice, intolerance and distrust in each other. We are encouraged in this by the present dramatic events in Ukraine. True, sociologists claim that over the past year there has been an unprecedented increase in solidarity in our Ukrainian society and a sense of unity in our na-tion. However, for unity to be long-term, it cannot be based on a consolidation of people who are faced with external threats. This unity must be based on deeper and stronger foundations, which are solidarity, a sense of responsibility for a com-mon heritage of our ancestors and gratitude for the blessing of being able to belong to a nation which is great in spirit and noble in its aspirations. Even more important and perhaps more difficult is reconciliation among nations. This chal-lenge is more important today than ever before. Maybe someone will say that talk of reconciliation with our neighbors during a war is premature. After all, we are adding new injustices and new wrongdoings to old historical wounds that have not yet been cleared by mutual forgiveness.

A LETTER FROM UKRAINE Slava Isusu Khrystu, my very dear parishioners of St. John’s Church, Your latest project of “Giving a gift of $10 to 2,016 poor people in Ukraine” touched the depths of my heart and soul!!!! You should have seen the reaction to your warm-hearted generosity. Allow me to share some first-hand impressions. We have been dealing with the nursing home in Berdiansk for a long time. The home has over one hundred poor and infirm people, for whom fate allotted very little of that which is good, friendly or joyful… Аmong this hundred there are dozens who bemoan the problems of Ukraine and do whatev-er they can to bring some peace to their souls… Five women, to whom I recently give 250 hryvni each, are well into their 70s and receive a pension of not quite 1000 hryvni , which is immediately transferred to the administration of the nursing home for room and board… It has been a long, long while since they have had an opportunity to have their own few pennies. It is they who, with their old crooked fingers, cut strips of fabric from old rags and make camouflage nets for the men out in the front lines of the war – they have already given us 8 such nets which we have taken to our soldiers, who use these nets to cover tanks and bunkers so that the Russian enemy will not see their posi-tions. I wish you could have seen how thrilled these simple old ladies were with their gifts of money: they kissed the envelopes, pressed them to their chests and wanted to kiss my hands… and, as I wiped my tears, I gave each of them a hug and told them that this money was not from me but from sincere, thoughtful people in far-away America. It was most pleasant to feel the joy of these old woman, who hold a proud Ukrainian spirit in their tired, worried hearts…. There is also the story of Nina Paslon – Nina is a 75 year old former teacher, who receives a pension of one thousand hryvni ($40) per month and can’t make ends meet: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened the envelope where I saw a card about your project of $10 gifts (250 hryvni). I cried – first tears of despair that our government cannot create normal conditions for people in their old age, but we understand that our country is at war! But these were also tears of joyful surprise and pride that the world still has people like YOU – generous, sincere and merciful. I bow my head before all of you! May God grant you a beautiful long life!!!” There are very many stories like these because there are many recipients of your gifts and all of the people in Berdiansk, who have received the gift of your $10 join Nina’s sincere thank you. Please know that I am proud to have belonged to your parish family, if but for a short while, a “family” that taught me to understand the pain and suffering of others. ЛИСТ З УКРАЇНИ! Слава Ісусу Христу, дорогі моєму серцю парафіяни церкви св. Івана!

До глибини душі мене вразила, зачепивши глибинні сердечні струни ваша акція – «По $10 – 2016-и знедоленим українцям!!!». Це треба було тільки бачити, як реагують на таку вашу сердечну жертовність! Ось найсвіжіші враження. Із старечим домом в Бердянську ми дружимо вже давно, там є більше сотні бідних, немічних людей, яким доля не дала нічого доброго, привітного, радісного… Серед тої сот-ні є з десяток таких, що правдиво вболівають за Україну й що можуть – роблять там все, аби хоч трохи заспокоїти власні душі... А 5 із них, яким я недавно вручив по 250 грн., ма-ють далеко поза 70 й неповну тисячу гривень пенсії, яку відразу забирає старечий дім за перебування там... Вони давно не тримали в руках свіжої копійки.. Саме вони своїми хво-рими, покрученими роками пальчиками, вирізають смужки тканин із старого лахміття й виплітають маскувальні сітки для потреб фронту – вже 8 нам віддали, які ми відразу від-везли хлопцям на фронт. Тими сітками накривають танки, бліндажі+, щоби «рускій» ворог не відразу видів їх позицій. Виділи б Ви, як ці скромні бабусі тішилися тими грішми: цілували ті конвертики, прикладали до грудей і все поривалися й мені руки цілувати... А я зі сльозами на очах обнімав кожну з них і все шептав, що то не мої гроші, а церковні – з далекої Америки, від щирих, благородних людей, які й про них пам`ятають... Як приємно відчувати, що бодай трохи потішили тих бабусь за гордий український дух їхніх спрацьовано-тривожних сердець... Ніна Пасльон – 75-літня колишня вчителька, яка отримує пенсію 1 тис. гривень (40 дол.) й ледве зводить кінці з кінцями: «Я очам своїм не повірила, коли відкрила конверт, де знайшла листівку про Вашу 10-доларову акцію й 250 гривень. Сльози відразу закапали, сльози відчаю, що держава ніяк не може створити нам нормальні умови для старості, але ми розуміємо – війна! Але то були більше – сльози радісного здивування й гордості, що є ще на світі такі люди, як ВИ – жертовні, щирі, милосердні… Кланяюся Вам до землі. Дай вам, Боже, довгих років життя!!!». Таких історій є багато, бо отримувачів багато i до цих щирих слів приєднується кожен, хто вже отримав у Бердянську Ваші по $10. Я пишаюся Вами, приємно втіша-ючись, що колись належав до Вашої парафіяльної родини, яка вселила і в моє серце вміння розуміти болі та страждання ближнього. Степан Герилів, м.
