• On May 1, 1926, Ford Motor Company becomes one of the first companies in America to adopt a five-day, 40-hour week. In early 1914, Ford had announced it would pay workers a minimum wage of $5 per eight-hour day, upped from a previous rate of $2.34 for nine hours.

• On April 30, 1939, the New York World’s Fair opens in New York City on a 1,200-acre site at Flushing Meadow Park in Queens. Among the new technology exhibited was FM radio, robotics, fluorescent lighting and a crude fax machine.

• On May 3, 1946, in Tokyo, the International Military Tribunals begins hearing the case against 28 Japanese military and government officials accused of committing war crimes during World War II. The trial ended with 25 of 28 Japanese defendants being found guilty. Of the three other defendants, two had died during the trial, and one was declared insane.

• On May 5, 1955, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) becomes a sovereign state when the United States, France and Great Britain end their military occupation, which had begun in 1945. With this action, West Germany was given the right to rearm and become a full-fledged member of the western alliance against the Soviet Union.

It's happening! Dementia! The parents, who took care of me, are beginning to slip away. Where are they going? How do I help them? What do I say? How do I keep them from driving the car today? Who comes first, my parents or my spouse and children? If only someone could help me!

If you are experiencing any of these questions you are not alone. As our parents age and experience changes in their mentation and health we as their children have to move into the gparenting h role.

Before we know it our Mom or Dad or even our Grandparents are slipping into the later stages of their lives. Their once vibrant personalities and quick wit have changed and slowed over the years. The hands that once cared for us are becoming more aged. The lips which gave good night kisses and spoke kind words of love are changing. WHY? Who stole my Mom fs mind from her?

As the body ages unfortunately for some, the mind does to. The mind begins to erase in different ways. Some lose the recent memories of Grandkids and Kids, and

hold on to memories of old times. Parents once deceased are still alive, or even a town once lived in years ago becomes the here and the now. Hygienic changes occur, refusals to shower or repeatedly showering due to the lack of remembering. Loved ones in a moment of confusion can make poor decisions which can compromise their safety and others. Outings in the middle of the night can occur due to confusion. Even a few calls to 911 may be made because someone has stolen the sheets off the bed or taken the milk from the ice box. All of these things and many, many more are experienced by caregivers. In summary we become caregivers and suffer from caregiver stress and no time to have quality time.

So one day it happens! We are placed in the role of decision maker for our parents. We wonder how we can ever make decisions for our parents and how can we plan for our loved ones safety. And most of all how do we explain to Mom it fs time to leave her house because it fs no longer a home.

When we were kids we didn ft know any better, and our parents guided us and watched over us because they loved us. Now it fs our turn to keep our loved ones safe. You have heard the saying, gTurnabout is fair play h. It fs our turn to give back.

When communication and redirection has been less than affective it is time to involve the Health Care Provider. The Geriatric generation follows the good doctor fs word first and foremost (most of the time). This can be useful when it fs time to hang up the car keys and park the car. Or when safety becomes of utmost importance and it needs to be heard from someone else. Schedule an appointment with your Care Provider and he or she can better assess the ability to drive and can offer further information on what is physically safe for your aged loved ones.

A house becomes a ghome h when your loved ones live with you and chores and duties are completed as a family. As the children become adults and marry and go on their way they start their own lives with their own ghome h. Mom and Dad fs home is no longer a home but becomes a house – a chore. These chores include, cooking and cleaning, shoveling snow and mowing the lawn, paying the bills, picking up groceries and medications, maintenance and the list goes on and on.

Now let us say our loved one was living in an area without these worries such as assisted living. Wouldn ft it be nice if family could come over for supper and Mom and Dad didn ft lift a finger? The driving is done by a chauffeur. Just hop in at the front door and you are off. No more worries about warming up the car or shoveling off the snow and possibly falling on the ice. Medications are monitored and dispensed without worry. Medical paperwork and appointments are all taken care of. Social interactions and activities are just down the hall

You‘ve heard the horror stories of road trips gone wrong. A tire blows, and there is no spare. A car is left unlocked, and thieves take full advantage of it. Don‘t let it happen to you. Take these safety precautions to ensure a good time for one and all.

Before the Trip1. Map out your route. Know where you are going and

where and when you will be stopping. Give someone

at home a copy of your itinerary. 2. Research areas of interest. Find out what to expect when you get to each location and make sure you are prepared. If you planning to hike through the mountains, for example, make sure you have all of the right gear. 3. Have your car serviced. Get the oil changed, the tires inflated and rotated, and the fluids topped off. If you are traveling in extreme weather, make sure the heater and air condi-tioning systems are working. 4. Stock up on emergency essentials. Make sure you have a first aid kit as well as a roadside emergency kit. You can make the kits yourself or purchase them. If you‘re not mechanically inclined,

you might want to sign up for a roadside emergency service if you don‘t belong to one already. 5. Gather some road maps. No matter how much research you have done and how many directions you have pulled, there is always a risk you‘ll make a wrong turn and get lost. Be prepared with road maps of every state you‘re passing through, as well as a GPS device.

On the Road1. Go at the best times. Try to travel during non-peak

daylight hours when traffic is lighter and visibility is good. Pay attention to the local forecasts, and should severe weather crop up, consider stopping somewhere until conditions clear. 2. Buckle up. Seat belts save lives. Use yours, and if you have passengers, insist that they use theirs too. 3. Drive carefully. Observe the road rules and speed limits. Take frequent breaks to stay alert and rotate drivers, if possible. 4. Reduce the risks. Don‘t text and drive. Don‘t drink and drive. Don‘t do drugs and drive. Don‘t get behind the wheel in any impaired state, whether overly tired or lightheaded due to medication. 5. Check in often. Call or text your family daily, if not more. Not only will this alleviate worry, but should something happen, your calls or texts might help to pinpoint your location.

The rack being referred to is the medieval torture device on which victims were stretched, sometimes until limbs were dislocated. The idea is that when you’re thinking very hard, you’re undergoing a sort of mental torture.

Q: Hi, first-time painter here. My dad offered some advice to my roommate and I on paint-ing our apartment, such as putting down dropcloths and stirring the paint really well. Is there any other key information we need so we do a good job? The landlord won’t be happy if we mess it up! -- Keri C., Tallahassee, Fla.

A: Preparation is the biggest part of painting. It can be maddening getting everything ready to paint, but if you do it right, putting down each coat is really satisfying. You’ll doubtless hear much more advice from friends and relatives on how to do the best job, but here are some key points:

--Get clearance from the landlord or building management before painting. Just as impor-tantly, pay attention to and follow any specific instructions, such as which colors to use.

--Prepare the room(s): Remove as much furniture and stuff as possible. Move what remains to the center of the room and cover with dropcloths or old sheets. Cover the floor or carpets with overlapping dropcloths.

--Prepare the walls: Take down pictures and carefully remove nails and screws; fill the small holes with spackling compound and let dry for 24 hours before sanding smooth.

--Remove cover plates from wall switches and outlets; cover window and door hardware with plastic or remove the hardware (if it’s easy to put back on). Cover light fixtures with plastic shopping bags and secure with masking tape.

Paint Like a Pro


--Brush away loose plaster, cobwebs, dirt and peeling paint. Sand bumpy areas smooth using fine-grit sandpaper. Wash the walls with a sponge dampened in a light soap-and-water mix or wall-cleaning product, and let dry.

--Use blue painter’s tape (which is less sticky than masking tape) to mask off window and door trim, and other areas where you don’t want paint to go.

--Assemble all the stuff you need to paint: Not just an assortment of brushes and rollers, but paint trays, stirring sticks (usually available free with paint purchase) and old rags or towels for cleanup.

--Save money not by picking the cheapest paint, but by purchasing the exact amount you need. How to do that? Measure the square footage of each wall (length times height) and total the numbers.

--Use primer if you don’t know what type of paint is currently on the walls, or if you’re covering glossy paint with matte paint or vice versa, or if the old paint is darker than the new paint.

Once prepped, you’re ready to paint! Follow some tried-and-true methods for laying down paint: Start high and work on one wall at a time. Use a foam edger or a brush to paint a border about 3 inches wide where the wall meets the ceiling. Then start rolling on paint, using a “W” pattern in various directions until the wall is covered. Once the walls are done, paint the trim, windows and finally the doors, if you’re painting them.
