AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME…..
Many years ago, a seminary professor was the guest preacher at a church where two members were key leaders of opposing factions in a national church controversy.
I heard the professor tell this story at a seminar I was attending.
At one point during his sermon, he boldly asked both gentleman to stand. Then, to the surprise of the men and the congregation, he said something to the effect of “Jesus Christ is the one who broke down the dividing walls between people. None of us are leaving here until you two begin the process of breaking down the dividing wall between you by extending the right hand of fellowship to each other and treat each other as Christians.” (read Ephesians 2:14 and Galatians 2:9)
This is the kind of situation in which parents with more than one child have often found themselves. How many times have parents set two of their children on a couch or in separate corners and told them they are going to put an end to their behavior and treat each other appropriately? I know it happened between my brother, sister and me. How about you?
I often wish we had someone who had the authority or respect of that seminary professor or parents who could speak with that kind of power and force to the opposing factions in our nation, especially in Congress.
Many of us live with the hope that the vote “of the people” might have that power and influence; but many of us also doubt that even a change of leadership, at any level of government, will have that effect. We’ve become all too polarized and cynical; at least, I will own this for myself. I have become too cynical about it.
But, let me relate to ourselves, personally. We often wait to address situations until the pain is too much for us or the situation

Many years ago, a seminary professor was the guest preacher at a church where two members were key leaders of opposing factions in a national church controversy.
I heard the professor tell this story at a seminar I was attending.
At one point during his sermon, he boldly asked both gentleman to stand. Maybe, in relation to our nation’s polarization, there isn’t enough pain, yet - or we’re not close enough to it being a matter of life or death - for our leaders to back off their entrenched positions and begin the process of respecting and reconciling with each other, accepting the wisdom hidden in each other’s position, and coming together in common purpose and effort, as previous generations have done.
It’s one way of looking at Christ’s teachings in His “Sermon on the Mount,” where He says such things as, “You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, ‘Don't commit murder, and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. .. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift at the altar and go. First make things right with your brother or sister and then come back and offer your gift.” (read Matthew 5:21-48)
Jesus Christ is saying, “Break the cycle of anger, hatred and violence before you get to the extreme of murder. Break it and reconcile as soon as you feel the anger within.” Unfortunately, we, too often, wait until the pain is too great or it becomes a real matter of life and death.
How far do we have to go in the cycle of polarization and entrenchment in our political views? Do we have to get all the way to the extreme consequences before we respect each other and work together?
If Jesus Christ, and His ways, truly became the authority, model and way of our life - the One who reconciles us to God and each other, then it could happen so much sooner. Let Him start in your heart, attitude, spirit and words.

Fruit of the Spirit Rev. Duane McDonough has invited a group of young talented musicians to bless us with their music during or 9 am worship service. They will be staying for a potluck and afterward, will
present an hour long concert.

KEVIN’S KORNER…
If you haven’t heard, the kids are having a great time in the new Kids worship service. Thank you to all who participated in the pie auction. We used a portion of the funds we raised to purchase new musical instruments. The kids can make quite a joyful noise. Kirsten and I were very surprised to hear how much rhythm this group has. We will be working with the kids to hone those instrument skills for the next few weeks before Taylor Rockwell
joins us on October 14th. That day we will all be together for
worship, both kids and adults. Taylor will be leading the congregation in a time of worship using drums and rhythm instruments. I have no doubt it will be a service you won’t want to miss.
I’ve had several parents ask me if they could join their young ones in the new Children’s Chapel for service. If you are interested in joining us please sign up so Kirsten and I know that you are willing to help out that week. The sign-up sheet is on the metal Board in the Narthex. Expect to play instruments and sing out loud. We have a great time praising the Lord together and we welcome your assistance with the little ones.
All our Helix youth ministry groups will begin there fall fundraiser this October. The youth will be taking orders for frozen butter braids. This year we have coordinated the timing of the sale so that you will receive your butter braids mid-November in time for the Holidays. The butter braids stay frozen until you need them. When family arrives or you want an amazing breakfast pastry, you just thaw, bake, and serve. It’s that easy. Please be sure to stock up. I promise you will wish you had bought more. Samples will be available at worship during the month of Oct.
Technologies side note: The outdoor sign has been received with
great reviews. I continue to explore the signs abilities and I have been gaining valuable experience with scheduling the different messages we choose to display. As we move forward with this amazing new marketing tool for our congregation, please feel free to fill our “Graphic Design Form” if you have an event that you would like to see on the outdoor /indoor displays. The forms are available in the office and they have been given to every committee. This form gives me all the information I need to accurately create and display your request. Also the indoor sign now includes group meeting room assignments. The narthex display changes daily so that visitors can look and see where their group is assigned to meet. If your group changes dates and times for meetings, please keep the office informed of those adjustments. We want to present the most accurate information as possible to our visitors.

NEW MINISTRY MEETING FORMAT Attn: Council, Christian Ed, Property Mgt.,
Worship, Missions, Stewardship, Fellowship, Church Growth, and Staff Relations,
On Sunday, November 4th, at 11:30 am all Church Ministries will
gather for a “bring-your-own-lunch” with a combined meeting of all ministries for improved communication, coordination and future planning. The ministries will hold their own individual monthly meeting following this combined meeting, which will become their November meeting. It will replace their regular week-day evening meeting for November. The intention is for the ministries to meet this way quarterly, with the regularly scheduled individual meetings in between.

SACRED DRUMMING CIRCLE

Worship becomes more powerful the more it is a moving, spiritual experience for us; the more we are participants than merely audience and observers. Also, ritual, movement, sound and Spirit are integral pieces of worship that help us connect with, feel and be moved by the experience.
On Sunday, Oct. 14th, we will experience a “drumming circle”
worship service that will include Christian scriptures, singing, praying, speaking, Native American stories and more. It will be a very different service, as we will worship with and to the rhythm and sound of drumbeat, from quiet and settling to robust and joyful.
So you are not “caught off-guard,” there will be no bulletin, choir, organist or sermon. Taylor Rockwell and Dan Metzger of New Directions Drumming Circles will be leading us in the drumming. As Taylor Rockwell said, “The drumming and the service will be the sermon.”
Please join us – AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS – to what we expect to be a wonderful, moving, powerful worship experience.

Sometimes I simply cannot get a thought together to share with you. So, I am sharing with you a letter from my devotional “Letters From God” written by Melody Carlson…. Enjoy receiving your letter from God.
“Dear One.
I know it’s hard to wait. Whether it’s in a doctor’s waiting room while someone you love is in pain or for an important call and the phone refuses to ring. Whether it’s due to long lines, inept clerks, or slow elevators, waiting is tough. And the fact is our culture has become accustomed to having what it wants quickly--often at the push of a button--and patience can seem a rare virtue indeed.
I operate on a different time clock than you do. What you may consider a waste of time, I may see as an opportunity for something altogether different. Perhaps when the stoplight is red for a prolonged period, I simply want you to take that moment to bring your cares to Me. Or when someone doesn’t show up on time, perhaps you need to quiet your spirit and say a quick prayer for that person’s welfare. So, practice patience and remember, My timing is perfect.
Patiently,

MISSONS MINISTRY
RED CAN SUNDAY
We will be receiving monetary donations on October 7th for the FACC emergency fund. $303 was collected in September.
FOOD FOR FACC
In October our food item to collect is 250 cans of Fruit. In case you are looking for sales to stock up November’s food item will be cans of diced tomatoes. Just as a
“heads-up”, in addition to our monthly food item donation we will also be doing the 250 two-pound boxes of pasta for Christmas baskets again. If you just buy one extra thing each week we all should be able to provide this with no problem. Thank you for your help. We have been told several times by the staff at FACC how much they appreciate St. John and all that we do for this community!

HARVEST FEST
Come and celebrate the harvest! Keith and Cherryl Hinrichs are hosting an afternoon of
fun, fellowship and food Saturday October 20th. The celebration will be from 11-2 with food, games, pumpkin decorating and field rides.
We are combining this celebration with trunk -r- treat. Feel free to dress up if you would like, and please remember to bring treats and decorate your trunk!
STEWARDSHIP
Applying Bible Principles
We’ve come to the last of a 48-month series entitled, “Effective Stewardship: Building on Biblical Principles.” We’ve considered a wide
variety of scriptural teachings during the past four years, but in one way or another, they all relate to the premise upon which this program has been built as stated in Psalm 24:1 - “The earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.”
You see, if the earth really is the Lord’s, and if everything in it belongs to the Lord, then in reality, we are managers and stewards of that which rightfully belongs to Him. We own nothing! God owns it all. He allows us to use what rightfully belongs to Him, but God continues to retain the ownership. We are just managers and stewards of what God has entrusted to us.
This means that whether we are paying our taxes, buying groceries, providing for our families or giving to support the ministry of our church, we are making decisions that involve the resources God has provided for us. And the primary reason God entrusts us with material possessions — especially money — is that we might glorify Him.
Every spending decision, therefore, becomes a spiritual decision as we “strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matt. 6:33). Yes, it is important to take care of our families and other obligations we have, but what is really important is to give back to God that which He has entrusted to us, that which is rightfully His. As we give voluntary, quietly, generously and cheerfully according to the measure of prosperity God has given to us, we glorify Him as we give willingly from our hearts (Ex. 25:2).
Don’t be confused: The amount we give and the percentage we give are very important. But as we give, let’s remember to keep the “main thing” the “main thing.” What’s of paramount importance is why we give. We give, not only for the glory of God, but also because He first gave to us. We give out of our love for Christ

who has redeemed us by dying for our sins on the cross of Calvary.
That’s why it’s a privilege to be God’s manager and God’s steward of what belongs to Him. That’s why it’s a privilege to manage God’s resources on His behalf. And that’s why it’s a privilege to give to the work of the Lord here at St. John United Church of Christ.
As we come to the close of this important series, are you using money and possessions as if they belong to you, or are you making spending decisions with the full realization that “God owns it all”?

Kevin’s Letter: In response to the issue of Helix staff salaries, Kevin’s letter clarifies
what events and meetings the additional staff are assigned to with $6500 being allocated for 2013. Because of unexpected expenses this year (increase in Pam’s salary to compensate for additional bookkeeping duties, health insurance for Kevin and Kirsten, etc.) we will look at beginning the “weaning” process with next year’s (2014) budgeting by putting a portion of these salary items in the budget and not rely on the Janshen Fund for the total amount. The issue will go to the Christian Ed Ministry for them to make formal request for money from the Janshen Fund for Helix staff.

attended and the pie auction was a success. Attendance at the Rick and Laura Hall concert on Saturday night was light. Council discussed other options along with possible causes of the light attendance. We will be looking at other types of talent that have a following or have been well attended in this area. We generally do not have good attendance for events that are outside our worship times.
Quarterly Ministry Meetings: Marilyn brought up the suggestion of having joint meetings among the ministries. This would help to clarify the responsibilities of each group and to better coordinate efforts between them. Brainstorming and interaction would be more easily attained in this setting. These meetings would follow after-worship classes, meeting at 11:30 am. After the joint meeting, each ministry would stay and have their regular monthly meeting so that they would not have to meet again on their regularly scheduled time for that month. The first quarterly meeting is being scheduled for 11-4-12 at 11:30 am.
North Wing Door: Door is on order and will be installed as soon as it arrives.
Insurance Board Update: Council and staff have been sent a link for on-line training required. For those who do not have a computer, this can be done using the church’s facilities. We are waiting to hear what the new insurance premiums are going to be. The previous amount did not include contents, so the total was adjusted to reflect that. The decision will need to be made by 10-1-12, so quick responses will be needed when the information becomes available. We will be getting the breakdown based on varying deductibles. A 6-10% increase is expected. Keith suggested looking into how having monitored heat and/or smoke alarms would impact our insurance costs.
