▎OverviewTokai University is a private university established by Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae in 1942. “Tokai” of “Tokai University” refers to the sea to the east of Asia, namely the Pacific Ocean, and symbolizes the desire to foster a rich spirit and broad perspectives. Tokai University consists of 7 campuses in Sapporo, Takanawa, Yoyogi, Shonan, Isehara, Shimizu and Kumamoto, which are comprised of 19 schools made up of 75 departments, It has 32 courses in 18 graduate schools. The total student population is approximately 28,500. The founding spirit and objectives of Tokai University are to contribute to human society, to foster active, talented people and to arouse interest in our earth and a sense of responsibility for the future of mankind. Tokai University's educational guidelines ground these objectives by offering a sound and reliable way of thinking as a basis for living and cultivating the richness of humanity. The core of such education at Tokai University is the “Lecture on Modern Civilization.” Since its establishment, Tokai University has prioritized this lecture, based on its belief that a university should not only provide knowledge and technology, but also be a place where the richness of humanity and creativity in each individual is cultivated. One recent initiative that we have been directing our energies toward is fostering of student-initiated projects to nurture our students' ability to apply the knowledge that they have acquired in the classroom to the betterment of society. The projects that we have supported range from the creation of the world's-fastest solar car “Tokai Challenger,” to volunteer activities that assist in recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Tokai University maintains academic exchange agreements with 125 universities/organizations in 39 countries. A wide range of international exchange activities are being actively pursued, from those on the academic front involving students, researchers, joint-research projects, and the exchange of academic resources, to cultural and athletic exchanges. There are about 1,100 international students on campus. Tokai University has 6 offices abroad (Denmark, U.S.A, Austria, South Korea, Thailand and Russia.)

Tokai University is ranked in the Wor ld University Ranking of QS and Times Higher Education.

Student VoiceMoataz Ayman KhanCountry Saudi ArabiaSchool EngineeringYear 2nd Year

Q Why did you choose Japan as a destination to study abroad?A Studying in Japan, let alone living in it, has been one of my dreams since I was a child. There are two main reasons why I wanted to

study in Japan, the first being Japan itself, and the second is the excellent opportunities it provides. Japanese culture, language and nature has always captivated me, and continues to do so. From national festivals such as “Obon”, “Kodomo No Hi” and “Seijin No Hi” to even local traditions such as “Tea ceremony”, their strong sense of cultural preservation has a strong impact around the world and experiencing them first hand is a must. I was always fascinated by Japanese language, regardless of what others had to say. As a person who came from a linguistically different background, I appreciate the art and the calligraphy of the Japanese language.

Japanese nature is famous worldwide. I have seen various nature related documentaries on TV for some years, and since motivated me to pursue my goal of coming here. On top of that, Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Not to mention that Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. Also, Japan has many of the world renowned companies like Mitsubishi, Panasonic or Toyota. Since I major in electric and electronics engineering, it is an appealing choice for me.

Q Tell us the reason you chose Tokai University.A During the time I was studying in a Japanese language school, I was interested in finding a unique university that combines academic courses with sports and is diverse.

A university that has the major and minor that I wanted to study, electric and electronics engineering, and information processing. Luckily I found Tokai University, which had all my requirements. However, it was only later during my last year of language school that I discovered this university through a friend of mine who advised me of it. Before that my only choices were universities that are either very hard to get accepted in or doesn’t have both major and minor that I needed. On top of that I wanted to study Spanish, and am glad this university provided it. I was also worried about scholarships and whether or not they accept international students who need financial assistance, and to my surprise they had that too. The last point that contributed to making the final decision was math and science support. Since I haven’t studied math or science in Japanese prior to entering this university, and I was afraid that I would struggle to find help. These are the points which helped define my decision-making.

Q Tell us the good points about Tokai University.A There a many wonderful points, but I will cover the main ones that appeals to me. This university has a variety of departments and faculties, from engineering and science to

law and language studies. And as a person who likes to study language, they provide us with a facility specialized for language practices called GLOBAL AGORA. There you can communicate with other students or even foreign exchange students. Also, if you need help with a certain language, L-NAVI is a language support/advisor that I used many times. Also, there is another place called S-NAVI that is made for students who are having trouble with science or math related subjects. I personally benefitted from both of these places. If you are into sports, a swimming pool and a sports gym is provided for just a small fee a year for both students and teachers alike. Another appealing point about this University is that they have 2 special events a year that I know of. The first is called “International Fair”, where international students present their own customs and cultures to other students. And the second is called “University Festival”, every year from 1st of November to the 3rd , many wonderful performances by students are held here across the campus. Once you become a 3rd year student and start your career search, the university’s career center has a wide range of useful information about companies, career fairs and even EXPOs. I have used that facility a couple of times, and proved useful to me.

Q How would you like to utilize the experience you had in Tokai University?A The experience I am gaining as I approach my graduation year will utilized in a variety of ways. First, communication is a great tool. It can help you earn a good job, makes

you a leader or even helping others in need. The communication skills I learned in this university will help me achieve great things in the future. Second, I want to invest whatever skill or experienced I gained to help others and contribute to society. My knowledge and expertise can be useful to those who don’t have it. Third, I want to use my experience and knowledge to get a great job and work at a large company. Fourth, I want to contribute my efforts to support my parents, as they are getting older and need my utmost support. Lastly, the need to pass down knowledge to newer generations as I get older. Once I become a senior engineer, I want to share my expertise with new generations of engineers. They will represent us and help build a better future, and it is my job to utilize these experience to make a better life for people.

Q Please write a message to international students who are thinking of coming to Tokai University.A To all the international students, a word of encouragement. I hope you enjoy your life as a university student as well as try your best to study hard and smart. Every moment

of our lives matter, cherish it and be enthusiastic about your future. Have dreams, desires and goals that you are willing to contribute to achieving it. Trials and tribulations are just a part of our lives, don’t falter just because it was impossible. Only when you are willing to persevere, you will receive what you desire. Hard work beats talent, and no matter how many times you fall, get up and keep moving forward. It doesn’t matter if you lose every time, as long as you never give up, you are winning. You only have one life, and you can’t reset time, so don’t say I will do something later, do it now. I urge you to be a person who is a leader and not a follower, a person who faces their fears and conquers them. In the end, our greatest foe lies within us, so don’t forget your purpose, and if you don’t know it yet, find it!
