General News

Welcome to Term 2! It’s great to see everyone back at school again. We hope you had a wonderful holiday. Congratulations to Riley who celebrated his birthday during the holiday break.Even though we’ve only been here for four days this week, it has been a busy time filled with lots of activities. We really enjoyed our Chapel program on Wednesday. Pastor Jack was our speaker and he told us a great story. We also had Mr Bill and Mr Ron come and present special medallions to us at the beginning of Chapel. The medallions are to commemorate a centenary of landings at Galipoli. We plan to take good care of these special reminders of what others have done for our country. We have begun to study a new book in English and we are having lots of fun finding out all about the adventures of a girl called Anne. We have been working really hard to learn how to write a persuasive text in Writing and we are looking forward to sharing our work with others. Well done everyone for a fantastic effort in our spelling test! We are trying really hard to fulfil our homework requirements for the new term. We need to remember to complete our new Reading Record each night. We are going to try really hard to read lots of books and record our efforts in our new Reading Record Booklets. A great start to the term, everyone!

ChapelWe wish to extend an invitation to our parents to attend our weekly Chapel programs. We would just love you to join us for this special time. Next week our Pre-Kindy class is rostered on to help out with the program. Hope to see you there!

School UniformsK-6 Students are required to continue wearing their sports uniform on Mondays and Wednesdays during Term 4. Please also note that all students are required to wear their hats during recess and lunch breaks as well as during PE lessons.

School MagazineBy now you will have received a letter about our new school magazine. This is very exciting because we have never had a yearbook entirely dedicated to our Toronto Campus students. We are asking for your input into helping to name our school magazine, and there is a form to fill out attached to the back of the letter. Alternatively, you can print the form out from the email you will have received. If you have any other suggestions or ideas, please see Mrs Thompson.

Whole School PhotoAdvanced Life have provided us with two options for our whole school photo. The two options will be available on Advanced Life web page within the next week should you wish to make a purchase. You will be able to purchase online using the code MLR386-1A or searching for Avondale School - Toronto Campus at www.advancedimage.com.au

Fund-raisingThank you for your efforts with the Woolworths Earn & Learn fund-raiser. We have tallied our ‘earnings’ and will soon be able to ‘buy’ items for our school. Watch this space for further information as to what, with your efforts, we were able to add to our school’s resources.

FeesFee reminders will be sent out shortly along with invoices for the last terms bus fees. With just a 9 week term we are well and truly on the countdown to the end of year. A last push to have your fee debt cleared by end of year would be appreciated.

Campus Coordinator’s MessageValues Begin with God

Without God, values die. We see this all around us in our local communities and the evening news. We live in a postmodern society without a central core of values. Every day we are pressured to accept anything, anyone, any actions, any deviancy, as OK. Me values are everywhere and in everything. We can easily be seduced. My needs are most important - what I can do, what I own, how I look, how important I am. Values begin with me.

I remember reading a story that shows the importance of our example as parents in conveying the correct example in our values.

Six year old Johnny was with his dad when they were caught speeding. His Dad handed the officer a substantial amount of money and he got off. “It’s okay, son,” He said, “Everybody does it.”

When he was twelve, Johnny broke his glasses on the way to school. His Aunt Francis persuaded the insurance company that the glasses had been stolen. They collected over $250. “It’s okay, kid,” she said, “Everybody does it.”

When he was fifteen, Johnny made right guard on the football team. His coach showed him how to block and at the same time grab the opposing player by the shirt so the official could not see it. “It’s okay Johnny,” said the coach, “Everybody does it.”

When he was sixteen, he took his first summer job at a market. His assignment was to put overripe tomatoes in the bottom of the boxes and the good ones on top. It’s okay, kid,” the manager said, “Everybody does it.”

The first year in College, Johnny was approached by a senior student with some test answers for $100. “It’s okay, kid,” he said, “Everybody does it.”

Johnny was caught and sent home in disgrace. “How could you do this to your mother and me?” his Dad asked. Aunt Francis was appalled. So was his high school coach, the market manager who gave him his first job, and all the people who had any input when Johnny was growing up.

“If there is anything this world cannot stand, it is a kid who cheats!”

Carefully choose the values you want to teach your children. Carve out a special time with your partner in parenting to decide on the most important values you want your children to have in their characters. Post the list in a prominent place in your home. These are the values your family will stand for. Begin today to plant God’s values in the soil of your child’s heart. God will be with you every moment.

REFLECTMan looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Sam.16:7 NIV

Pre-Kindy

Kindy

This term the Pre-Kindy class will be going on a tour of the world. Each student will have the opportunity to research about a country of their choosing and present to the class at news time. Children will receive a sticker in their passport for the countries they have learnt about. Please see the note in your child’s homework bag, and put your child’s choice on Edmodo.

On Wednesday, November 8, our Pre-Kindy class will be visiting Oakvale Farm and Fauna World. This will be a lovely day out, and it will include a splash around in the new Splash Bay (at Oakvale Farm), so your child’s swimmers will be needed for that day also. I will send out a note very soon with all the details.

Our Letterland Party will be held on Wednesday, November 15. Please add on Edmodo which Letterland character your child would like to be. If you need some ideas for your child’s costume, then you can see the photo outside the Pre-Kindy room. This shows what the children last year did. This day will feature games and activities to celebrate our Letterland knowledge. This day is different from our school’s alphabet day that will be held this Tuesday.

Our children returning to school this week enjoyed drawing butterflies to classical music. They all got to share their holiday news, which is always an exciting time of the day. On Wednesday, the children discovered the worm farm at gardening time, and delighted in holding some. We also celebrated Tayla’s 5th birthday on Wednesday with special jellies that Tayla and her mum had made. Happy Birthday Tayla!

We hope you all had a great week like we did!

Our first week back at school has been very busy and after Monday it felt like we had never left. In Mathematics we have been working on saying and writing our numbers to 30. We have also been working on ordinal numbers. We have been playing some games and then working out what place we have come. Sometimes it has been hard to remember that not everyone can come first every time. This term we have spelling words and we have been working really hard in our English time to practice our words. We have also been practicing how to edit sentences. We have been making sure that simple words are spelt right and that the sentence has a capital letter to start and punctuation at the end. In Art this week we have had heaps of fun playing with clay. We were focusing on how to make patterns in the clay and how to shape it. We made bowls and left them to dry so that next week we will be able to paint them.

Students were really excited to harvest some amazing looking carrots from the garden this week. They couldn't wait until they got home to eat them!

Years 1 & 2

Pre-Kindy C lass News

Years 3-6

Welcome to Term 4. It has been great to see all the students’ smiling faces as they returned to school this week. They have all settled into our learning routine and are working hard. We have enjoyed hearing about each other’s holiday during news time.

On Monday morning for worship we had a very exciting science object lesson “Can you make water walk?”. Not only did we observe water “walk”, but we saw it run and climb up the paper into the empty cup beside it. We observed the coloured water fill the empty cup and saw two colours mix together. We celebrated that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Students can look forward to new science object lessons for worship every Monday this term!

K-2 have started a new Science unit this term called, “Up, down and all around.” We have identified features of our school environment and predicted what will and won’t change over time. Our class has also prepared an Investigations Garden, where we placed natural and man-made objects. Students will observe this garden over time to observe and record which objects will change and which will not.

For a fun STEM activity, students worked in pairs to test which surfaces allowed toy cars to travel the furthest. They recorded their answers to share with the class and found that the cars travelled best on smooth surfaces like carpet and concrete. Next week the students will be using this information for a design challenge.

We had so much fun playing piggy in the middle for PE. We swapped groups throughout the lesson and had different sized and shaped balls to make it more challenging and to test our skills for throwing and catching.

Overall, it has been a great start to the new term. We have lots of fun and exciting learning experiences planned throughout the term. You may have already heard about the silk worms and another class pet (surprise). Stay tuned for this exciting news next week.

It is great to have our classroom buzzing with activity again. It was a rather quiet place over the holiday break! Lots of things have been taking place in just a few days. We have been learning all about ‘integrity’ in Bible and we really enjoyed our chapel program this week, taken by Mrs Morris.

In Maths, we have been learning all about Patterns and Algebra and it has been great to see all the effort that has been going into learning concepts about this area. We have been studying a wordless book and we have discovered that pictures can actually tell a thousand words! What a great start to the term!

Alphabet Day is to take place next week on Tuesday and we are very much looking forward to this event. We hope you have been telling others about this special day and encouraging them to visit our school. See you there!

We hope you enjoy the photos in this newsletter from last term’s School Concert. It was such a special event and we really want to thank everyone for their support with this program.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Parents & Friends We value Tolerance

Welcome back to a new term and a crazy paced end to the school year.

Next week many of our parents are assisting at the Alphabet day on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity to showcase our little school and the learning family we have here. If you are not yet already helping with a station, we are requiring some assistance with the P&F station where we will be selling ice-cream, fruit-salad cups and drinks. If you are available at any time between 9:00am – 1:00pm to help out here, please let either Tiani, Rose or Linda know or e-mail us at [email protected]

This coming Tuesday was also supposed to be the day scheduled for our initial P&F meeting. Due to the Alphabet Day and heavy parental involvement, we have decided to reschedule this to a later date. We will keep you informed as to when this will be.

Kind regardsTiani
