Know the rules

It is very important to follow security procedures when openingand closing the restaurant to ensure the safety of yourself andother crew members.

Even if you are never responsible for these stations, you shouldbe aware that McDonald’s has these policies.

c No loiteringWhy is loitering not allowed?

Who’s hanging around? People lingering in the parking lot or suspiciously hanging out aroundthe restaurant may be “casing” the restaurant—observing the restau-rant’s procedures to determine the best time to commit a crime.

If you see anyone suspicious, write down the person’s license plateand description, then notify your manager.

c Staggered openDescribe a staggered opening.

Enter as a team

1 Arrive at work together

Meet your manager and other crew members off-site. Travel togetherto the restaurant.

2 Drive all the way around the building

Check for anything unusual, such as broken windows, opendoors, or cars in the parking lot.

If anything looks suspicious, leave and call Operations Consultant.

DOOR

Stat

State

e

3 Assign a lookout

One crew member should remain in the car as lookout as other mem-bers enter the restaurant together.

If anyone approaches your manager and crew members, thelookout leaves and immediately call security or police.

Don’t be a hero! If you are approached by someone who threatensyou, listen to and follow what that person says.

4 Your manager locks the door and turns on the lights

If everything is ok, your manager signals the lookout that it is safe tocome in.

One crew member stays by the phone while the manager lets thelookout in. The door is locked again.

No one should enter or leave the restaurant until it is open forbusiness.

Never open the door for anyone.

1 In preparing to leave, all employees exceptone should go to the exit door

The remaining employee stays by the phone, ready to dial police no.Everyone checks the parking lot from inside the restaurant.

2 A second lookout employee leaves first

If everything appears normal, one employee leaves and goes to his orher car. Relock the door immediately.

3 The second lookout employee gets into the car

The employee drives through the parking lot, and waits by the exit.

4 The second lookout watches as all otheremployees leave

All employees other than the second lookout should leave the restau-rant and go to their cars.

If anyone is approached by someone suspicious, the second lookoutdrives off and calls security or police.

If anyone approaches the second lookout employee, the person bythe phone should call police immediately. Everyone else should moveaway from the glass doors.

If someone is picking you up, you should leave after the employeesdriving their own cars.

You should never remain in the restaurant alone after closing.

Special situations

c Bomb threatsWhat should you do if you receive a bomb threat?Write down everything about a bomb threat.

Take good notes. If you receive a bomb threat, it’s important that youwrite down all the pertinent information you get and tell your man-ager immediately.

When and where. Ask for the location of the bomb and the time it willgo off.

Listen closely to the voice. Is the caller male or female, calm orexcited? Does the caller have any accent or speech impediment?

Make notes of any background noises you hear (motors, music, laughing and joking).

The more information you write down, the better the chance of preventing injury to everyone in the restaurant, and the better the investigation will go afterward. The more you write down at the time, the less you have to try to remember later.

c Natural disastersDescribe your restaurant’s procedures for common natural disasters.

Write down your restaurant’s policies for dealing with natural disas-ters common in your area.
