Generating the most comprehensive data for plastic market, PLASFED has published the report on 9 months realization and year-end fore-cast for 2013 plastic market, updated accordingly. Prepared by PLASFED and PAGDER Secretary General Barbaros Demirci the report forecasts that the plastic market in Turkey will continue to produce foreign trade surplus in 2013.

According to realization of 2013 January – September and updated year-end forecast of 2013 issued by PLASFED, which produces the most comprehensive data aimed at the market, one of the biggest growth rates in recent years will be seen. According to international data, the plastics manufacturing in Italy has regressed 7 percent last year and it is anticipated that it will remain constant at the end of this year. According to this result, Turkey has stepped up to second place in Europe in plastics manufacturing.

“Our success deserve appreciation and we need to hang on to reality”

Assessing the 9-motnh realization and updated year-end results of 2013, Federation of Plastic Industrialists - PLASFED Board Chair-man Selçuk Aksoy said that it is satisfactory that the market is growing and the export success should be appreciated by everyone else. Aksoy commented: “Turkish plastic market is aware of its structural prob-lems, especially in terms of raw material. On the other hand we wish to bring our success in export into view. The endeavors of plastic indust-rialists deserve appreciation, but we need to stay realistic. We want to advance our studies with decision makers, regarding our structural problems and we wish to canalize them. There is a tough competition in plastic market throughout the world. We forecast that there will be a slight slowdown in the growth rate of our export in the end of the year. The contribution of domestic demand to our growth will be a litt-

le more severe, compared to recent years. Once again I wish to point out the discomfort we feel due to negative campaigns based on inaccurate information reported by competitive sectors in this environment where there is a rough competition and a developing market.”

-Turkish plastics sector based on value: At the end of 9 months of the year, Turkish plastics manufacturing has established a 27.1 billion dollars of production and an added value of

10.8 billion dollars. Import was 2.2 billion dollars and export has reached 3.4 billion dollars. The domestic consumption of the sector was 25.9 billion dollars. The sector has realized a foreign trade surplus of 1.2 billion dollars in 9 months.

Provided that this tendency continues in the remaining of the year, the sector will grow at a rate of 23 percent, reaching a production of 36 billion dollars. Import will reach 2.9 billion dollars, export will reach 4.5 billion dollars and the foreign trade surplus will be 1.6 billion dollars. In terms of value, the 12 percent of the manufacturing will be exported and 92 percent of domestic consumption will be covered by domestic manufactu-ring.

Year-end data of PLASFED 2013, have been updated in consideration of 9 months of realization. Ac-cording to updated data, Turkey will be the second biggest plastics manufacturer in Europe at the end of the year. Foreign trade surplus in plastics will continue and their manufacturing value will exceed 36 billion dollars.

-Quantity based Turkish plastics market: The manufacturing of plastics was 6.4 tons in January – September period. Domestic consumption was 5.6 million tons, export was 402 tho-

usand tons and import was 1 million 113 thousand tons.

In case this tendency continues, the sector will grow 19.9 percent quantity based and will reach 8.6 million tons of manufacture at the end of 2013. The export of the sector will be 1 million 484 thousand tons, its import will be 536 thousand tons and its foreign trade surplus will be 948 thousand tons.

Once again, in terms of quantity, 17 percent of the manufacture will be exported while 93 percent of the domestic demand will be covered by domestic manufacturing.

-Export data:Turkish plastics industry has performed a direct export of 4 billion 132 million dollars – total for goods and raw material – and an indirect export

of 3.7 billion dollars - covering the plastic products that other exporting markets utilize – at the end of 9 months.

It is forecasted that at the end of 2013, direct export will reach 5.5 billion dollars and the sector will realize an indirect export of 6 billion dollars. At the end of 9-month period, the most exported countries which form 51 percent of total export are: Iraq, Russian Federation, Germany, Azerbaijan, England, Libya, France, Romania, Iran and Georgia.

-Foreign-source dependency in plastic raw materials continues:

Due to the lack of domestic manufacturing, the foreign-source dependency of Turkish plastics manufacturers continues in raw materials.

The raw material import of the sector has reached to 5 million 156 tons, in terms of quantity, at the end of 9 months. The import of the sector is expected to increase to 6.9 million tons.

It is forecasted that the domestic raw material manufacturing will be stay at the same level of 842 thousand tons. Domestic consumption will be realized as 7 million 135 thousand tons and the foreign trade deficit in plastic raw materials will reach 6.3 million tons.

The average price rises in plastics export: On the other hand, as a result of 9-month import realization, unit prices have been actualized as 5.4 dollars/kg, staying at the same level as

last year. As to last year, import unit price increased 4 percent to 5.4 dollars.

According to PLASFED data, the plastics manufacturing will increase in the rate of 23.1 percent and exceed 36 billion dollars in terms of value. The plastics export will be 4 billion 498 thousand dollars, with an increase of 11.4 percent. The foreign trade surplus in plastics industry will continue. Accor-ding to PLASFED data where the export is forecasted to be 2 billion 886 million dollars, rate of export meeting imports will be 156 percent.

-Remarkable topics in 2013 year-end forecasts Pursuant to PLASFED 2013 year-end forecasts, plastics manufacturers

are getting ready for the biggest growth of recent years. While the growth of the sector is forecasted as 23.1 percent, in terms of value, this rate exceeds the revised GDP growth forecast of 3.2 percent by 7 fold. Therefore, the plastics manufacturers can reach 4.5 percent by increasing their share in GDP with 1 po-int. The effect of domestic demand on the growth of plastics is also increasing.

According to PLASFED data, Turkey will be one of the two biggest manu-facturers in Europe. No growth is expected in Germany and Italy, which are the other two biggest manufacturers, in 2013. It is forecasted that the Germany will stay level at 15 million tons of manufacturing - the same level as last year, in terms of quantity. After a 7 percent of regression compared to previous year in 2012, it is forecasted that Italy will not realize a growth in 2013. In respect of these expectations, Turkey has reached the position of second biggest manufacturer in Europe, surpassing Italy.

below the average import price.

TOTAL EXPORT• In the first 9 months of 2013, direct export of the sector has been realized as

a total of 4 billion 132 million dollars, of which the 759 million of is raw material and 3 billion 373 million dollars is goods. On the other hand, via other exporting sectors, a 3.7 million dollars of indirect export has been accomplished.

• At the end of 2013, it is forecasted that the direct export will reach 5.5 billion dollars, of which the 1 billion 22 million dollars of is plastic raw materials and 4 billion 498 million dollars is goods. In addition the sector is expected to build a 6 billion dol-lars’ worth of indirect export.

PLASTICS EXPORT BY COUNTRIES • Turkey has exported plastics to nearly 200 countries in the first 9 months of

2013 and the first 10 countries have obtained a share of 51% of total export. • In the first 9 months of the year, Iraq, Russian Fed., Germany, Azerbaijan and

England were countries where Turkey exported most of its plastic goods.

PLASTICS IMPORT BY COUNTRIES • Turkey has imported plastics at an amount of 2.16 billion dollars the first 10

countries have obtained a share of 76% of total import. • In the first 9 months of the year, China, Germany, Italy, France and South Korea

were countries where Turkey imported most of its plastic goods.

CONCLUSION :After the 26% growth of the Turkish plastics sector in 2002, it is forecasted that

it will obtain another fast growth rate of 19.7% in 2013 and the GNP growth will inc-rease its 3.5% share to 4.5% within GNP with a manufacturing of 36 billion dollars in 2013, which is at least 4 fold.

In 2013, while export is increasing, it is forecasted that the export increase rate will decrease and the manufacturing increase will depend on the domestic demand.

Since the 15 million tons of manufacturing of Germany will stay at the same level and Italian plastics sector has regressed by 7% in 2012 and no increase is expected in 2013, it is seen that Turkish plastics sector will be second in line in plastics manufac-turing, behind Germany.

AGENDA (COVER)

Turkish plastics sector is complaining about not being

known enough

Turkish plastics industry: We are in the world race too

Turkish plastics sector is getting prepared to end 2013 with growth. A growth around 12-13 percent will occur according to the esti-mations made by PLASFED and PAGDER. The importance of growth is clear when it is taken into consideration that growth in Turkey will oc-cur around 4 percent or a little lower. Plastics sector is one of the sectors in which Turkey has a trade surplus. A foreign trade surplus of 1.3 billion dollars is estimated to occur by the end of the year. Almost the whole Turkish market is being supplied with products manufactured domestically. Only 9 percent of domestic con-sumption is covered by import. Turkey is one of three largest plastic manufacturers of Europe. It is sated that Turkey will maintain its position in the future and it is even a strong possibility that it will move to the second place.

Plastic sector is the largest sector of Tur-key and one of the important sectors for Tur-key in terms of foreign trade surplus also with 14 thousand companies and the employment of 250 thousand people within the sector. Be-sides, the importance given to the plastic sector increases day by day. Because, plastic is can be manufactured in a more environment-friendly, easy and cheap manner when compared to its equivalents. Comprehensive programs are be-ing implemented in terms of protecting not only industrial products but also agricultural prod-ucts and food with plastic. There are important investments in polymer and plastic technol-ogy. Composite materials are one of the most important alternatives for the future of the industry. On the contrary to that, the negative opinions for plastic sector are being underlined frequently in Turkey. PLASFEDDERGİ put under the microscope the whole Turkish plastic sector in a way to provide basis for discussions.

Turkish plastic sector started its activities almost at the same time with the world sector. Today, almost all materials throughout the world are manufactured in Turkey. Entrepreneurs in the sector are conducting activities regarding not only the Turkish market but also the markets in the surrounding countries. In addition to that the plastic sector is under heavy pressure in Tur-key when compared to other countries. Opinions based on clichés, most of which are crammed, are displayed against plastic products because of both the environment and the prejudice for the product in question.

BREAKING NEWS

It was revealed in a study made by PAG-DER that most people have extremely lim-ited knowledge regarding Turkish plastic sector. Actually plastic products are the most en-vironment-friendly industrial products in terms of manufacturing processes. The whole product circulation is environment-friendly since their re-cycling is extremely easy and cost-effective.

Plastic products played an important role in changing the world. They became products, from which both the manufacturers and con-sumers benefited, and contributed to spreading prosperity thanks to being very when compared to the materials they replaced. They were used throughout the world as alternative materials instead of or with inorganic materials such as glass, metal, rubber and wood and became in-dispensable. Besides, this development did not stop. New inventions emerge every day and an almost “unlimited” usage is being reached thanks to composite technologies.

Turkey is growing fast with plastic industry. Current consumption amount is the harbinger of increase in the future. Turkey is an attraction center for the surrounding countries because of its geographical location. Of course, plastics will play a role in Turkey’s prosperity because of their qualities.

PLASFED’s 2013 year-end estimations re-garding manufacturing, which are around 31.2 billion dollars, will be realized more or less. How-ever, when we consider the level that we already reached, we can mention a large and “appetizing” Turkish market also. Sector had a serious growth and investment period during 2000s. By the end of 2012, 7.2 million tons of manufacturing was reached.

When only plastic products are taken into consideration (products other than raw mate-rials and machine sector), it is seen that they make a contribution of 12 billion dollars to Turk-ish economy. 14 thousand firms, most of which are SMEs and in which 250 thousand people are employed, are active within the sector. There are companies within Turkish plastics sector, which are or which built the capacity to be among the largest manufacturer of the world for certain products. 17 out of 500 largest companies in Turkey are conducting activities within plastics sector. Totally 207 foreign companies made in-vestment in Turkey.

Plastic industrialists have the intellectual capacity to solve their problems and to ensure develop-ment.

Development of plastics industry in Tur-key is similar to some other countries. WE see that investments started in our coun-try since 50s right af-ter plastics started to spread throughout the world. We can say that non-governmental or-ganization of the firms within the sector also go back a long way. Or-ganization in our sector

started with PAGDER - Turkish Plastics Industri-

alists’ Association, which is one of the founder members of our association, starting its activi-ties in 1969.

PLASFED, Turkish Plastics Industrialists’ Association, the association as the chairman of which I found the opportunity to reach you, was founded two years ago. We have all the advan-tages of working under the roof of a federation. Firstly, we have the intellectual capacity and knowledge of years thanks to the most experi-enced institutions in the sector.

It is time to focus on the solution

C o m m u n i c a t i o n is one of the most im-portant subjects in the business world today. Mass communication, which emerged in twen-tieth century, became different with the ef-fect of Internet and new tools in the present day. This element is more important for the plas-tics industry because the messages caus-ing negative percep-tion regarding products

are getting more widespread throughout the world. It is becoming more difficult to correct these messages based on wrong information or resulting only from prejudice since they are repeatedly shared in social media by individuals or on the informative web sites.

During the studies we conducted after “negative perception” and “repeated wrong in-formation” regarding plastic products reached to serious levels it drew our attention that the same institution occurred in other countries too. Moreover, almost all the information, in which plastic products are assessed within the environmental context, is resulting from shared messages.

Ankara has a great potential for products of high added value.

Ankara is at the center of a geography where people lived since very early times. Many civilizations form cultures that were formed in Bronze Age to the legend of “Gordion Knot” lived in this area. Essential change of An-kara, on the other hand,

started with it being the central headquarters for the National War of

Independence ending with the foundation of the Republic of Turkey and being declared the capital of this young country. As for a very long time, as it is with many administrative centers, it remained as a trade city since there are lots of public employees. However, the scene changed a lot during last 20 years. With its population of 4.9 million people, Ankara is the second larg-

est metropolis of Turkey and one of the largest metropolises throughout world. It is the attrac-tion center for the surrounding cities in social terms and in terms of business since it is in the center of Anatolia. The element which essen-tial renders Ankara important is that it became the only center of Turkey in terms of R&D and manufacturing because of the qualities of some industrial branches.

Hard days will eventually be over; we must be prepared for the coming days.

Bursa is the first large capital of the Ot-toman Empire. Today, it is one of the strongest industrial and touristic areas of Turkey. Many successful companies, which make us proud, are active in Bursa. Automotive industry companies come first

among these companies. There are many industri-al branches developing based on this industry.

We are one of the most attractive and surely the largest cities of Turkey and Europe with Uludağ University, which is one of the most prominent universities of Turkey, and with its experienced and hard-working labor force in every meaning.

Generally speaking, our country has an advantageous position for the plastics indus-try. Bursa, on the other hand, is a city of ours that comes to foreground with its logistic facili-ties. Logistics advantage means being able to provide opportunities to the companies, which specialized in certain areas and which want to conduct boutique business, as well as ensur-ing large scale manufacturing. We know that there are entrepreneurs who would like to use this advantage. Bursa and Turkey is at a good location for the companies which will work with flexible structures in food, textile and retail.

PLASTECH is in the way of being a strong brand

Thanks to its fer-tile lands, climate and advantageous location, all the settlements in Aegean region, particu-larly Izmir, became plac-es in which trade and manufacturing is con-ducted and the econo-my was live throughout the history. As a matter of fact, our region was one of the settlements in which the economic-

commercial rules and money emerged first. Ae-gean region maintains its qualities derived from the history with both its social life, modern and lively cities and manufacturing centers. In ad-dition to being the region, in which the largest industrial institutions of Turkey were located,

agricultural activities are being conducted very intensely in Aegean region. The strongest structuring in terms of plastics industry of our country occurs in Izmir and Aegean region after Istanbul and Marmara Region. We are one of the largest petrochemicals manufacturing areas of Turkey and Europe. We have very strong firms for plastic products with high added value

Turkey displayed one of the best performances throughout the global crisis.

Kayseri is a city known in Turkey for its entrepreneurs and busi-ness people. An impor-tant part of the most successful companies in Turkey was founded by businessmen from Kay-seri. Kayseri has a great potential also for plas-tics industry. As I men-

tioned, Kayseri, which is one of the centers of trade and manufactur-ing historically, has every

kind of infrastructure that can handle a dense work environment.

Turkey is one of the countries which the global economic crisis was observed at the low-est level. Besides, it is one of the developing economies which display the best performance. The country entered an economically stable pe-riod. There are of course risk elements but the young population and the fact that Turkey kept its growth even during the global crisis gives a strong message for future. Serious successes we obtained to establish an economic environ-ment appropriate for investments with the new incentive system and reforms. Turkey is reach-ing a good point in terms of global competitive power.

Turkish plastic sector passed the exam during the crisis.

Istanbul and Mar-mara region is the most developed region of Turkey. It is almost like a country itself with its capacity for trade, in-dustry, agricultural pro-duction and finance ar-eas. Istanbul is a global metropolis with its pop-ulation of 13.8 million. If

we think about Kocaeli, Sakarya, Tekirdag and Kırklareli, which are in

position of Istanbul’s hinterlands - and which actually transformed into another metropolis - , this area seems like an “economic area” of 17.5 million people. In a sense, it is the 9th among countries that are candidates for European Union membership! We should also underline that 10 million tourists visit Istanbul per year.

First tidying up tendencies are being ob-

served in the world economy. But of course there are still very big risks. On the contrary to the good signals in developed countries, there are remarkable fluctuations in developing coun-tries which include Turkey. Turkish plastics industry passed the exam during the crisis. Of course, the fact that national economy kept its growth affected this largely. The fact that import also improved during the same period should also be written as success. The most important thing that can be said for this fact is that Turkey is in a position that is very attractive as a country for developing export markets. We are of course aware of the structural problems but Turkish entrepreneurs are communicating with the businessmen of the surrounding coun-tries to an extent which never occurred before in their history.

PAGDER Plastic Perception

Study was completed: Consumption habits are changing

PAGDER, completed the second plastic perception study with GfK research company. The Study revealed that lack of information affected most of perception regarding plastic products. Even if consumers still think of prod-ucts with low added value when plastics are mentioned, the products which were remem-bered the most changed by the time according to the changing consumption habits.

Plastic cups took the first place in the new study conducted by PAGDER when it is compared to the stud-ies conducted before , in which the plastic products that were re-membered the most were washbowls, flowerpots, buckets and dishware. Everything from airplanes to auto-mobiles, from the clothes we wear to homes we reside in becomes more quality and cheaper thanks to plastic products. The study can be supplied from PAGDER as print or in electronic form.

Plastic Perception Study, which PAGDER conducted in order to determine consumers’ attitude and behaviors against plastic tools and packages and to direct the studies to be done in plastic sector, was published. When the study is compared to the previous studies it was de-termined that plastic products with low added value are still among the products which were remembered the most but the types of prod-ucts changed according to consumption habits.

The fact that consumers’ knowledge re-garding plastic products is limited was remark-able as another important finding of the study. It was determined that consumers remembered the plastic products with low added value al-though plastic products are used in many differ-ent areas with high technology and plastics are used in critical products every area of our lives. The study also revealed the changed in our con-sumption habits.

It was determined that consumption hab-its changed in the study, which was presented to the attention of the people who are inter-ested and both printed and electronic versions of which were opened for use by PAGDER. In a similar study made in 2009, 22% of the con-sumers answered “washbowl” when they were asked “What do you remember when plastics are mentioned?” while 16% of people in the new study answered the same question with “cups”, both of which were the products that were remembered the most. In both studies, cups, dishware and washbowl remained among the top three products that were remembered the most. Disposable cups used in a large part of our lives were revealed to be the most “fa-mous” products of plastics industry. Other re-flections of the change in consumption habits were that forks and knives, which were 1% in the first study, increased to 6 percent in the sec-ond study and the importance of nylon bags and carboys decreased. The products that people consumers in Turkey remember the most were cups, dishware, washbowls, bottles, water bot-tles, nylon bags, flowerpots, forks and spoons, chairs, toys, baskets, detergent containers and tables, respectively.

Turkish plastics sector opened its doors in K 2013

Turkish plastics sector was impressive in

Düsseldorf K 2013 fair , which is the most im-portant event in its area. Participants who vis-ited “K 2013”, to which a national participation organization was made with the cooperation of the most prominent non-governmental organi-zation of Turkish Plastics and Plastic Processing Machines sector, PAGDER, and İKMİK (Istanbul Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters’ Association), generally thought that many pro-ductive negotiations, which may turn into coop-eration, were realized.

K 2013 held in Düsseldorf city of Germany, which is the most important event of the plas-tics sector, was successful for the firms in Turk-ish plastics and plastic processing machines

sector. General opinion in the survey made with firms who participated in the fair with the coop-eration of PAGDER and İKMİB was that hopeful negotiations were made in terms of opening the door for cooperation and export which was the first purpose of the fair.

- Efficiency and saving came to the foreground in K 2013

Elements of efficiency and saving came to the foreground in the products that were brought to the foreground in the promotions and presentations in K 2013, which was orga-

nized between October 16th and 23th. Highly environment-friendly and efficient products which will allow savings in both plastics and ma-chine sectors were brought to the foreground by the firms. Another quality of products that brought to the foreground was their environ-mental awareness.

Domestic sales of Turkish plas-tic processing machines were es-timated to be around 748 million dollars in 2013.

In the report, which contains the realiza-tion of first half of 2013 for Turkish plastic pro-cessing machines and the year-end estimation for 2013, it was stated that sales around 7448 million dollars were expected to be realized until the end of the year. Even if Turkish plastic processing machines succeed at exporting an important part of their products, they still com-plain about not having the same interest from their domestic manufacturers. Sector is expect-ing some support to improve its domestic mar-ket sales and manufacturing and export.

PLASFED (Turkish Plastics Industrialists’ Federation), the institution which produced the comprehensive data regarding plastic sector, published its report regarding year-end esti-mations for 2013 and the first half realizations regarding plastic processing machines for 2013. It was stated in the report that a manufacturing of 175 million dollars were made in the first 6

months of the year within the sector and it was estimated that a manufacturing of 350 million dollars and an export of 138 million dollars will be realized at the end of the year in the light of this data. While increases are observed in the export of the sector decreases are expected to happen in import. However, products with for-eign origins still keep their importance within the sector.

Ratio of export covering the import for the first 6 months of the year is around 26 percent!

According to first 6 months realization of plastic processing machine sector in 2013, plastic processing machine and component manufacturers realized a manufacturing of 175 million dollars and an export of 69 million dol-lars. While domestic manufacturers sold prod-ucts worth 106 million dollars to the domestic market they imported almost two times more than that, products worth 268 million dollars. The importance of import within the domestic market at the end of first six months of the year

was 72 percent while the ratio of export cover-ing import was around 26.

2013 year-end estimations!

Year-end estimations were made in PLAS-FED report according to the realizations in first six months. According to this manufacturing of plastic processing machines can reach 350 mil-lion dollars at the end of 2013. In the report, in which it was estimated that import will reach 536 million dollars, it was also estimated that export will be around 138 million dollars and the total sale of domestic and foreign origin prod-ucts (plastic processing machines investment) will be around 748 million dollars.

False information regarding

plastics is still being presented to public.

PAGDER Chairman Hüseyin Se-merci: We are in for any kind of com-petition other than unfair competiti-on!

PAGDER Chairman Hüseyin Semerci re-acted to a introductory film of a firm acting in glass sector containing false information which was broadcast on TV channels. All the entre-preneurs working in manufacturing industry were called to remain within the context of fair competition with two separate announcements made by PAGDER. Hüseyin Semerci stated that, like with any industry that contributes to the national economy, they were happy with the glass industry reaching a manufacturing scale at European level, however, he reminded that plastics industry which was the second largest in Europe and which gives a surplus of foreign trade, was also very valuable. True information regarding the relation between plastic products and the environment was shared again during the press release.

Turkish Plastics Industrialists’ Association (PAGDER) Board Chairman, Hüseyin Semerci stated that they increased to be the second largest manufacturer of Europe and the plastics industry, the use of which becomes more wide-spread with time thanks to new products and technologies and which is protected by devel-oped countries, had been developing in Turkey also, just as it has been developing throughout the whole world.

Hüseyin Semerci, who reacted to the fact that it was stated in the promotional spot of a firm manufacturing glass products that plas-tic products manufactured with raw materials made of natural gas cannot be recycled, an-nounced that this initiative contained false in-formation that might cause unfair competition.
