    New to the SCA?

The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international organization dedicated

to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our “Known

World” consists of 20 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around

the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events

which feature tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, various classes & workshops, and

    more.

    How to Get Started

Getting Started in the SCA can be a little daunting– but it’s not as overwhelming

as it seems! All you have to do is come out to an event or contact our local Chatelaine

([email protected]). The Chatelaine’s job is to help you navigate through the SCA!

Remember, you are not required to dress up to show up to your first event! The Chatelaine

has loaner garb until you can get your own, and if you join us at Fighter Practice or another

event many helpful people will be there to welcome you and answer any questions!

Greetings Dear Tir Ysgithr! About a fortnight ago, as His Excellency Sim was out riding, patrolling the far reaches of this Gem of Atenveldt, he spied a raven whose feathers were the brightest argent. It flew high over his head and circled down and down and down finally alighting upon a sign post on the edge of the boarder between our lands and the road to Mons Tonitrus. At first His Excellency was startled, but then realized what he was seeing. The bold corvus took to stare at him. Sim went to approach the proud bird and just as he was within reach, the White Raven took once more to the skies. As His Excel-lency stared at the wonder of it, the bird swooped downward once more and as it flew close past his ear Sim swears he heard the words Fly Home, Simon! We have always known this time with our Beloved Barony would come to a close. We still marvel at how quickly the days have passed by. We marvel in the wonder of you, Our Populace and the amazing people you are, one and all. But the Raven Calls. Although Their Royal Majesties Morgan and Elizabeth have been beyond busy with preparations for the impending war upon the fields of Estrella, They sent us Their Seneschal and called forth new servants. The accounting has been complet-ed and the poll of your confidence has been taken - TRM present to you Sir Bren-dan mac Artuir and Mistress Tigra MacKay of Marwoode as the next Baron and Baroness of these fair lands! We rejoice in their appointment and make ourselves busy at vacating the Castle Ysgithr and planning our final progress as the ruling nobility of these Gem bejeweled lands.

    From Their Excellencies

    Articles

Tablet Weaving By Lord Demetrious of Crete

Greetings good Barony, I, Lord Demetrious of Crete would like to announce and

invite all interested to attend an intro to tablet weaving class that will take place this

    coming Estrella War.

Tablet weaving is a beautiful and wonderful that is prevalent through many centu-

ries of past. Dating back to times BCE, tablet weaving is an art that allows for the

construction for narrow bands that have many uses, both in period as well as in our

society. Trim for our beautiful garments, bag straps, belts, garters, favors, so many

things can be made from this art. It allows for both simple applications of design,

as well as very very intricate patterns and designs that catch the eye from afar.

While dating back to late Egyptian times, tablet weaving was found most common-

ly in the period where the Norse and Scandinavian cultures were at their height,

through the medieval period. These northern countries were some of the first cul-

tures to truly expand the limits of what this art could provide for it's weavers. They

used a a variety of methods within this art, while the most extensive examples we

have been able to find were a technique known as Brocade. This being the use of a

separate weft. or middle thread not a part of the warp, interwoven in the band, hav-

ing the top most portion showing and creating designs. These examples, preserved

from the use of the metal thread for the design, and protected from the earth by

items like broaches, show us what true master craftsmen these people were.

During the medieval period, a different technique, known now as double turn/ dou-

ble face found it's way into the spotlight. This method, allows for the creation of

almost any shape or design one can imagine and have the patience to plan

  • 17

Volume 27 January 2017 Anno Societatus LI Issue 9

out. Everything from basic geometric shapes, to beautifully represented heraldic

themes can be created with this application.

While most weavers were believed to use a method known as warp weighted, mean-

ing that they did not use (primarily at least) a loom as we think of today, rather than

twigs, pebbles or anything small and fairly light in nature would be hung from the

back of a surface or ledge, we today have the great benefit of having centuries more

knowledge of technology and trial and error. We today, can use these same meth-

ods, originally carved out centuries ago, in a manner that stays contained on itself,

free of tangle, or the need of larger amounts of space. This allows us with the com-

plexities and distractions of mundane life to pick up, put down or move our projects

    with us wherever we go.

I will be teaching an introductory class, meant to give everyone attending the

knowledge to leave being able to apply themselves with the basic techniques of this

craft and produce for themselves beautiful bands holding many uses. This class will

be hands on for those that can bring the needed materials, with plenty of theory in-

struction, followed by the actual beginning and making of a project at the end of the

    class.

We will cover what makes tablet weaving different from other styles of weaving,

what it means to warp, how the cards play a pivotal role in the construction, how to

manipulate them for different effects, how to read different types of patterns, and of

course the actual starting of a weaving project and how to continue and manage

it. Attendees are welcome to come for part or all of it, the first hour will be simply

talking and instruction, the latter portion will be application of this knowledge with

those that are ready to begin. Plenty of time for questions, and I will also have a

few bands in various stages of completion to give real time examples of what I will

    be teaching.

Needed materials to construct in class will be :

--1 loom suitable for tablet weaving, I recommend an inkle loom that con

  • 18

    Volume 27 January 20167Anno Societatus L I Issue 9

tains a tension peg (one that has a slot to adjust as needed)

--10-16 tablet weaving cards of the 4 hole variety, these can be easily made

out of playing cards, or obtained through one of many awesome mer

chants, I know at least one will have affordable cards on site for sale

--1 shuttle to contain the weft thread)

--2 colors of thread, I recommend size 10 crochet cotton to begin with for

ease of use and availability (I would like for each person to have 2 spools

of each color, to make warping take much less time)

--Note taking materials will be recommended as there will be a very large

    amount of information given

For reference there are a great many books on this subject that can be helpful for

reference, I find Applesies and Fox Noses, and Techniques of tablet weaving by

Peter Collingwood if you can find it. Applesies will be available for purchase

through Whitewolf and Phoenix on site and I find as one of the best starting books

you can find. It is entirely based on finds from Iron Age Finnish pieces.

I plan on having my class Wed afternoon of war and plan ot have it be a 2, or 2.5

hours time block to provide enough time for instruction, questions and application.

If anyone has any questions leading up to, I would be happy to answer and am ex-

cited to see some our populace continue their arts endeavor! I can be reached on the

Book of Faces, or through [email protected]

    Yours in service,

    Lord Demetrious of Crete
