Walkers information for Twin Peaks of Cheshire This information tells you how to register to be a walker, ways to get sponsorship money, details about the walking route and how to prepare for the walk day. If you think this is for you, please join us. If not we would welcome help on the day (please read the “helpers and sponsors information” document), or just sponsor someone else! Who can be a walker? Anyone is welcome to join in the walk, as long as they get some sponsors to donate to the PTA funds. We welcome family groups, groups of friends or individual walkers. Under 18s If you are under 18 an adult must accompany you. If you cannot enthuse a member of your family or other adult to walk with you, please tell us in advance, at [email protected], as soon as possible. We will try to find you a place with one of our walk leaders. How to register as a walker, group of walkers or walk leader We would like to know, in advance, the name of everyone who will be walking on 20th September 2015, so we know how many people to expect. All we ask is a £5 donation for each family group or individual walking. You can do this via Parent Pay – just make a £5 donation to the Twin Peaks item. For each person in your party, you must Email us at [email protected] with each person’s:
• Name, Address and age if under 18 • Email contact (you thereby give permission for the PTA organisers to
contact you directly instead of via school) • An emergency telephone number, for a relative or friend who is not
walking that day • Your proposed means of transport to and from the start point. • Let us know if you are a qualified walk leader willing to lead a group. • When you have set up your sponsorship page (details below), please let
us know where to find it. If you do not have email, send a letter into the school office with the same details, marked “Twin Peaks Registration”

use old-‐fashioned pen & paper. How to get to the starting point The walk starts at 09:00 from the Trentabank Visitor Centre, Macclesfield Forest (Grid Ref SJ961711; Post Code SK11 0NE). You will need car transport. Let us know in your registration details if you need a lift. The full walk The route is a 20Km (12.4 miles) circular walk that takes in two prominent hilltops in Cheshire that lie between Macclesfield and Buxton. You will walk uphill for a total of about 750m (2500 feet), and back down again. It’s a big walk, but if you are fit enough you should be able to complete this route within 9 hours, including rest stops. That’s why we are meting from 08:30 for a 09:00 start and finishing by 18:00. If you want to end at the halfway point, or find on the day that you will not finish by 18:00, our helpers will drive you back to the start.
The full route From the Visitor Centre we follow footpaths to the summit of Shutlingsloe (also known as the Cheshire Matterhorn owing to its sharp-‐looking peak from some directions), then downhill, across a small road, through a farm to reach Clough House . Then along a small valley called Cumberland Clough up onto moorland. At the Cat and Fiddle, a support party will be at the road crossing. We then head uphill to Shining Tor, the highest peak in Cheshire, then retrace our steps downhill until we reach the Peak View Tearoom. We cross the road again and follow a path down to Bottom-‐of-‐the-‐Oven, a short uphill again to Forest Chapel, before reaching Macclesfield Forest, then downhill to our starting point. Just one peak? If you are unable to start early, or Two Peaks sounds too much – let us know, and if there is sufficient demand we will arrange a half-‐day variation starting midday-‐1pm.

Difficulty The route is mostly on footpaths across fields and moorland, plus two short distances on “quiet lanes”. It does not involve any rock scrambling or climbing. Care must be taken on the descent from Shutlingsloe: it is the steepest part of the walk, on grass and potentially muddy. The Buxton-‐to-‐Macclesfield road is crossed at the Cat & Fiddle and Tearoom, requiring due care.
Facilities There is a small car park, and public toilets (plus a snack van) at the Trentabank Visitor Centre. Food and toilets are available at the Cat & Fiddle pub and nearby tearoom, which happen to be at the halfway point. We plan to have support people on hand to supervise road crossings and shuttle any tired walkers back to the start point.
Preparation for the walk By the 20th September 2015 we need you to be fit, enthusiastic & hoping for good weather on the day. Here are a few things you can do to improve your comfort & ensure that you are fully prepared to enjoy the Challenge. In advance
• Do some walks over the summer holidays and weekends; gradually building up the time and distance you walk. Once you can walk for 6 to 8 hours in a day (rests are allowed) without needing a day in bed afterwards, you are in the zone.
• Cut your toenails (carefully, after a bath or shower) about a week beforehand.
• Check out your gear, just in case you need to buy anything when you find holes or something missing.
• Clean & waterproof your boots. • Buy some Compeed for blisters: these are magic if applied as soon as
anything starts to hurt.

What to bring on the day Drink Individuals vary in the amount they need, but everyone will drink more in warmer weather. It’s very likely that you will drink 2-‐3 litres, or more. Water weighs 1kg per litre! The support team will help by providing water on route, so you will probably manage by carrying no more than 1.5 litres at any one time. Bring waterproof containers (eg: 1 litre fizzy drink bottles are light & tough). Food Think like a Hobbit and bring enough food with you for the day.
• Have a good breakfast, and maybe a second at the start of the walk. • Lunch. Choose foods that are nourishing yet low in weight and bulk
(sandwiches, fruit, cake, biscuits, nuts etc). Avoid perishable foods that spoil in hot weather.
• Tea time & rest-‐snacks. As for lunch. You can never have enough cake. • Emergency rations (chocolate, dates) that you don't plan to eat unless you
end up waiting in a rescue scenario (eg: you sitting with someone else who needs rescuing).
What to wear on the walk • Comfortable walking boots or strong walking shoes • Thick socks (cotton bad, wool good) • Long sleeve top or T-‐shirt (“breathable” non-‐cotton is best) • Jacket/fleece • Trousers (not denim because it's not warm when wet)
What to pack on the walk
• Waterproof jacket & trousers (essential: use as windproofs when not raining)
• Water container, food, emergency rations • Spare jumper or fleece • Warm hat & gloves • Sunhat, Suncream, Sunglasses, lipsalve • Mobile phone, loose change • Watch or other time device • Routecard (you will be given this) • Compeed, savlon, painkillers, any medication you usually take. • Rubbish bag to carry all rubbish home with you please. • If you are a leader: Map, compass, survival bag, plastic whistle, torch.
Optional gear
• Walking poles (2), GPS, reality-‐TV film crew. • Camera, flask of tea/coffee, picnic table, hamper, butler.
