Aprs avoir t abandonn huit ans dans un pensionnat, Rohan
revient dans la petite ville industrielle de Jamshedpur. Il
se
retrouve oppress entre un pre autoritaire et un jeune
demi-frre,
dont il ne connaissait pas l'existence.
Contraint travailler dans l'usine sidrurgique de son pre
ainsi
qu' poursuivre des tudes d'ingnieur, il tente malgr tout de
forger sa propre vie en ralisant son rve : Etre crivain.

A la fin 2003, jai donn lire mon ami ralisateur au chmage Anurag
Kashyap lapremire bauche de mon nouveau scenario. Il la lu en un e
heure, me la rendue et est
retourn ce quil faisait et ma dit qu un jour il p roduirait ce
film, et que personned'autre ne le ferai.
Jai voulu le gifler ce moment l. Mais il avait raison.
En Mars 2009, aprs avoir essay pendant des annes de trouver un
product eur,Anurag et son ami Sanjay Singh runirent assez d'argent
pour que je pui sse
transformer ce scenario en film. Ils nont envoy tourner et mont
aid jusquau bout faire le film que jai toujours vou lu faire. Le
rsultat est Udaan. Cest le voyage dun
adolescent qui veut se librer de ses chaines. Ce qui a des chos
de ma propre vie.
Udaan sign ifie littralement dcoller. Si javais eu une roupie ch
aque fois que jaientendu les gens railler que mon p remier film
avait finalement dcoll, je serais un
homme riche. Mais il y a une raison pour l aquelle les clichs
fon ctionnent. Et de direque Udaan est un travail damour serait
rpter ce clich propos des premiers films.Mais cest vrai. Et plus
encore. Cest un film qui a t fait avec beaucoup d honntet et
de dvouement, par une quipe fantastique qui a bien voulu
sembarquer dans cetteaventure en raison d u scenario et du f ilm
que jessayais de faire.
tre officiellement nomin Cannes, le premier film Indien depuis
sept ans, est trsencourageant et rend modeste. Cest un moment que l
quipe et moi-mme chrironstoujours , et nous esprons quil ne sagit
que du co mmencement de grandes choses
pournous et p our les ralisateurs ind pendants de lInde.

PORTRAIT DU RALISATEUR
Motwane a commenc sa carrier en tant quassistant prod ucteur de
l'mission-dbat desa mre 'Teen Talk'. Il passa encore trois ans la
tlvision avant de sauter le pas et de
se mettre au cinma en tant qu assistant de Sanjay Leela Bhansali
sur le tournage deHum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Dautres travaux assistant Deepa Mehta sur le tournage d e son in
fortune premireentreprise Water et mettant en scne la musique pour
Paanch dAnurag Kashyap.
Ensuite il a t assistant ralisateur (et Ingnieur du Son) de
Devdas de B hansali.Depuis l ors, il a dirig la musique d e Water,
dsormais termin (et sorti en salles), il a
crit le scenario de Goal et d e Dev D.

In late 2003, I gave my out-of-work director friend Anu rag
Kashyap the first d raft of mynew screenplay to read. He read it in
an hour, gave it back t o me, went back to what h e
was doingand told me that one day he will produc e this film,
that nobody else will.
I wanted to smack him then. But it turned ou t that he was
right.
In March 2009, after years of tryin g to get a producer on
board, Anurag and his friendSanjay Singh raised enough money for me
to turn th at same script into a film . Theypacked me off to shoot
and b acked me all the way to make the film I always wanted to.The
result is Udaan. It is the journey o f a teenage boy wanting to
break free from his
shackles. Not surprisi ngly, it echoes parts of my lif e.
Udaan literally means to take flight . If I had a rupee for the
nu mber of times Iveheard people quip that my first film has
finally taken flight, I would be a very rich man.
But clich s work for a reason. And to say that Udaan is a labour
of lov e would berepeating t he clich about firs t films. But it
is. And more. It is a film that has been madewith a lot of h onesty
and dedication, by a fantastic crew who were willing to come on
board because of the script and the film that I was trying to
make.
Being an off icial selection at Cannes, the first Indian film in
seven years, is veryhumblin g and encouraging. Its a moment me and
th e crew will always cherish, and we
hope that its just the beginning of g reat things to c ome for
us, and for independentfilm makers in India.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Vikramaditya Motwane started his film career assisting his p
roducer-mother on hertelevision talk show Teen Talk. Three more
years in television went by before he
made the big leap to feature films by assistin g Sanjay Leela
Bhansali on Hum Dil DeChuke Sanam.
Further stints assisting Deepa Mehta on the il l-fated first
venture of Water anddirecting son gs for Anu rag Kashyaps Paanch
followed, before he was back as
Associate Director (and Sound Designer) on Bhansalis Devdas.
Since then, he has directed the son gs in the now-completed (and
released) Water,and has written the screenplay for Goal and Dev
D.
Udaan is h is debut f eature film.
