uring December, the proverbial
seventh heaven will once more be-
come a firm and very exciting reality
when Nelson Mandela Bay plays host to the
South African leg of the IRB Sevens Rugby
World Series.
On December 13 and 14, spectators will be
afforded the thrilling experience of seeing the
worlds best on the field, while off-field a
world of wonders awaits, as the Nelson Man-
dela Bay Metro and surrounds rise to the oc-
casion with their customary hospitality and
an abundance of spectacular sights and
sounds to absorb.
According to Port Elizabeth-born, veteran
Blitzbok-forward, Frankie Horne, he could
think of no better venue to host the South
African leg of the HSBC IRB Sevens.
PE isknownas the FriendlyCity and this
really is true. I may be slightly biased, but
when it comes to the beautiful beaches, the
friendly people and the excellent facilities, I
could think of no better place in the country
to host this leg of the tournament.
Horne who holds the world record for 60
consecutive World Series tournaments for
the Springbok Sevens said apart from his
passion for the region, a bit of superstition
may also form part of his preference for play-
ing the SA leg at the world-class NelsonMan-
dela Bay Stadium.
Last yearwe beatNewZealand in the final
at the Nelson Mandela Stadium just two days
after the passing of our late former President
Nelson Mandela. We played for Madiba on
that day.
According to Horne, the crowd support at
the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is another
reason why the team loves playing here.
It is the home leg of the tournament and
it always is great playing in front of a home
crowd. But the supporters in the Metro take
home-based support to a whole new level. The
way in which supporters here carry the play-
ers is not foundanywhere else in the country.
Tourism hot-spots like the Addo National
Elephant Park add to the perfect bouquet for
tournament supporters. Not only can sup-
porters view world-class 7s rugby, but also
world-class tourism attractions.
Jonker Fourie, Chief ExecutiveOfficer of the
Emfuleni Corridor Tourism (Ectour), echoed
Hornes sentiments by saying that the Nelson
Mandela Bay Metro and surrounds offer more
treasures than even most locals are aware of.

he dedication of an unemployed man to
be on his post timeously as a car guard
or washing vehicles, no matter what the
weather conditions, contributed to him be-
ing offered the opportunity to operate a
small informal business.
For the past four years, Michael Tswangu
has been operating on the square between
Daly Street and Lances Lane in the central
business area of Uitenhage as a car guard
and washing vehicles.
It all started when one day he asked us
for water to wash cars. I decided all right,
well provide him with two 50 litre buckets
of water on a daily basis and see how it
goes, saidNicholasGomes, owner ofWater-
ford Tree & Beer Yard.
Since then Ive watched him and recog-
nized that he really has pride in his work
and does a good job. So, I told him I wanted
to show him how to run his own small busi-
ness.
Gomes decided to assist him with the do-
nation of a tool box filled with a complete
cleaning kit, all the needed car wash equip-
ment, a vacuum cleaner, brush and scoop,
new security vest and a lock to keep his kit
safe. He also donated bright red golf-shirts
toMichael printedwith thenameMichaels
Car Wash & Security on it.
I want him to create his own income in
this way and really think that more people
in the world should help one another. Not
for making profit, but because you can, and
because you care to change your communi-
ty, said Gomes.
According to him businesses should take
responsibility in their immediate areas, con-
tributing by picking-up paper and dirt, cut-
ting lawn and make it more presentable.
One can not wait for authorities to do it.
Do it yourself, get people to help you clean the
area. In thisway you assist unemployed to get
bread on their table and the townwill bemore
presentable.
Michael Tswangu said, I am very happy
for receiving all these items. Thiswill helpme
make my clients even more pleased with the
job I like to do. Now the cars will shine!

lowest lows (the departing of your loved ones) - and for that I
thank you.
For 21 years you have been my life and gave me the inspiration
and passion to get up in the
mornings and marvel at the simplicity that Rosedale life can
bring - all the happy children playing in
the streets - sometimes on the streets. The community that looks
out for one another. You have
even brought me cooked meals when I was pregnant - for that I
thank you all.
For 21 years it was my motto to never go to work if I do not
feel that I could make a difference or if
ever I would not have the compassion - still this passion has
not changed. And it is for this reason
and the fact that time does not stand still for anybody - that I
have prayed for a special doctor to
take over from me. That time has come and for the first time I
can, with a smile in my heart, assure
you that dr Ruth Thomas, has the compassion, the knowledge and
the passion to care for you for
the next 21 years!
It is not because my passion and love for you have diminished
that I leave, but because I still have
such a passion and hunger for more things to do, new paths to
venture and to grow as a person.

Signs And Wonders Mission has been
working in theNorthernAreas for the past
10 years, running holiday programs, hand-
ing out food parcels and offering counsel-
ling.
One of their greatest highlights is their
annual Christmas Party, where they re-
ward the children who have diligently at-
tended the holiday programs throughout
the year.
Many of the children attending our hol-
iday programs are living in underprivi-
leged circumstances and in some cases the
situation at home is in a dire state, said
Clive Davids, Director: Signs & Wonders
Mission.
This year they would like to reward the
400 children between the age of 4 and 15
years, with a special shoe box gift con-
taining special goodies that will take care
of some of their basic needs.
They request the communitys assist-
ance to aid them in this regard.
Some of the items needed to add to
the shoe box include: toothbrushes and
toothpaste, face cloths, soap, roll-on and
spray, a new clothing item (like a t-shirt
or shorts), second hand clothes are also
welcome, a toy appropriate for boys and
girls aged 4-15, stationery for school and a
party pack containing sweets and cool
drink.

gentlemen since 1822. This year, young
Muirite, Lyle Ressouw, has reaped the bene-
fit of years of hard work and commitment by
winning The Herald Matric of the Year
2014 award.
His list of accomplish-
ments read like a short novel
andhehas excelled academi-
cally throughout his school
career and ranked first posi-
tion in his grade from Grade
4 through to Matric.
Lyle received the subject
prizes, awarded for achiev-
ing the highest marks for a
particular subject, for every
subject which he took
throughout his school ca-
reer. He is a member of the
Academic Achievers Com-
mittee and was awarded
BlazerColours forAcademic
Excellence in 2012 and 2013.
During the 2014 Muir Col-
lege Speech Night, Lyle was
awarded the Fergus Howard Shield for Out-
standing Achievement and The Weatherdon
Trophy for the School Dux.
Lyle holds the top position in theAdvanced
Mathematics Programme held at Pearson
High and was placed in the 1st position for
Maths and the 2nd position for Accounting
during the NMMU Winter Programme 2014.
At the NMMU Govan Mbeki Science and
Maths Programme he was placed in 1st posi-

Lyle has also won multiple Gold Certifi-

Olympiads. He received an award as part of
the Quiz Team as they won the Regional
Leagues from 2011 2013.
He was also a member of the Muir Choir,
which won gold at the AKTV Applous Com-
petition this year. He is a Blood Peer Promo-
tor andmanaged to organize the largest dona-
tion from the school, in the
Metro area for 2013.

Town Council he was part of
a group which organised the
JTC Talent show which
brought together many tal-
ented learners from various
schools in Uitenhage and the
tickets sales for the show
brought in R8 000 which was
donated to Aandmymering
old age home. He also helped
organise the FindingFame
Talent Show held at Muir
which was held to raise
funds for the 2014 Matric
Class.
Lyle is also a keen Chess
player and played for the
Muir 1st team. He was also
chosen to represent EP at the South African
National Chess Championships from 2007
2012.
Lyle served in the ROAR Fax (School
Newspaper) and Scripture Union Commit-
tees. He was part of the Dance Committee
that arranged the 2013 Matric Dance. He is
also amember of the 1st teamDebating Socie-
ty.
He received a bursary to study Actuarial
Sciences at Stellenbosch University, award-
ed by OldMutual. He is also guaranteed a job
with Old Mutual following his successful
completion of this challenging course.

placed in its care by the Childrens Court, em-
barked on a new venture, being the proud
owners of Oosterland Opstal home industry
in Uitenhage.
Oosterland Opstal is one of our sustain-
ability projects to generate funds in assisting
the centrewith projects empowering our chil-
dren with positive life skills allowing them to
take responsibility for their life and future,
said Riaan Marais, Director of Oosterland
Youth Centre.
Oosterland Opstal, situated at 13 Penford
Avenue, is managed by the multi-talented
Adele Phillipson, former owner of Olive Tree
Coffee Shop and Opstal.
This is a win-win situation. I know in my
heart that this home industry will be to the
benefit to the centre and its children, said
Adele Phillipson.
Cakes, catering & platters
Oosterland Opstal offers a coffee shop and
bistro and also a variety of quality foods, spe-
ciality and themed cakes as well as all home

die kerk se 40ste bestaansjaar.
Pastoor JaquesKillian en sy vrouVeronica
is vanjaar 13 jaar by di gemeente, die langste
wat n pastoorspaar nog aangebly het.
Oor die 40 jaar was daar 10 pastore met
oorlede Tom Strydom as die stigter van die
kerk in 1970 by n huis in Bosmanstraat.
Die kerk was daarna vir n rukkie in die
stadsaal se sysaal, daarna in n tent op die oop
stuk grond waar die kerksaal in 1971 vir n
skamele R2 000 gebou is. Die kerk is in 1974
gebou.
Die kerk het huidiglik sowat 500 lidmate en
volgens Pastoor Killian het hy 13 jaar gelede
begin met slegs 12 lede en die kerk was knie-
diep in die skuld.
Ons het huidiglik n baie lekker groep
jongmense in die kerk en ons fokus is op fami-
lies om saam die Here te dien.
Soos die gemeente gegroei het was dit
spoedig nodig om die kerk te vergroot.
n Sakeman,Wendell Aspeling, het soos n
engel oor ons pad gekom en op sy eie onkoste
die kerk vergroot.
Die Here het in sy hart gewerk en sedert-
dien het dit net bly groei en kyk ons nie terug
nie, s Pastoor Killian wat vandag sy 40ste
verjaardag vier.
Shalom Rapha beteken God van vrede
wat genesing bring, en di naam s alles.
