Keep the Community Vibrant! On behalf of our Board of Directors and member organizations, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all our volunteers and donors! Your support is always welcome and truly keeps our work on behalf of the community as effective as possible. We continue to expand our horizons always looking for more ways to help grow and strengthen our community. Your donations allow us to do this! For the first time ever the Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians will take place in Edmonton this November - in large part because we knew we have
a community able to stage such a significant event. All of our events are becoming bigger and better and with your ongoing support we can continue to respond to critical issues and needs in our community in Alberta. Thank you!
On behalf of the ukrainian canadian community, we extend our most sincere congratulations to the members of our community receiving these awards, which recognize the significant contributions made over a number of years by university of alberta alumni in their local communities and beyond. Dr. Geraldine Nakonechnya visionary leader in the field of nursing, the former dean of health and community studies at Grant macewan university developed one of the first e-learning systems in canada. she pioneered international student exchange projects in australia, ukraine, russia and china. her canadian international development agency sponsored health education link project established regulatory networks and curriculum transfers within the russian federation, which had a significant impact on hundreds of thousands of nurses, resulting in better public health outcomes. dr. nakonechny is the ucc-apc board of directors member representing the ukrainian women’s association of canada - alberta provincial executive. Myron Semkuley and Elaine (Cormier) Semkuleythey are the distinguished alumni award recipients, a most prestigious award recognizing living graduates from the u of a whose truly outstanding achievements have earned them national or international prominence. they have made an immeasurable difference in the world through their volunteer organization medical mercy canada. they are heroic examples of health practitioners and humanitarians without borders. together, they are improving the quality of life for those forgotten peo-ple living in desolate areas of ukraine and south east asia. after raising five children they began medical aid projects to burmese refugees in thailand and impoverished people in western ukrainian villages. their tireless dedication inspired others to get involved, and, in 1999, medical mercy canada was established. Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladynshe is an accomplished artist internationally renowned for her use of vivid watercolours and dramatic imagery. larisa’s works can be found in collections across canada, south america, australia, and europe. a sessional instructor with king’s university college, she is also well-known for her illustrations in textbooks and children’s books, including five canadian best-sellers. the long-standing, dedicated volunteer of the friends of the kule folklore centre at the u of a believes in giving back to the community, and she incorporates charitable donations as part of her exhibition’s objective.

UCC-APC Member Update: UCAMAGreg boroWeTZ, uCama
On April 10, five members of the ukrainian canadian archives and museum of alberta
(ucama) went to cochrane, alberta to collect a donation of over 180 pioneer tools and kitchen utensils, as well as a sewing machine and a disassembled loom from roman
fodchuk. many of these artifacts appear in fodchuk’s book Zhorna: material culture of the ukrainian pioneers, which can be purchased at ucama for $25.
In May, ucama hired ilya khineyko as a step student to continue the digitization of the George and luba moskal video collection. as a doctoral student in history who focuses
on contemporary ukraine, ilya provided masterful editing and insightful summaries of these predominantly ukrainian and russian recordings.
On May 21, ucama suffered a flood that damaged hundreds of books and journals, as well as six artifacts. while ucama’s office, library and archive were opened during the restoration phase that followed the flood, guided tours had to be suspended for a number of months. carpeting has been replaced, drywall has been applied and ucama is ready to
provide guided tours once again. On July 17, a joint letter of support for ucama’s Jasper avenue building project was signed by the ukrainian catholic women’s league of canada edmonton eparchy museum, the peter and doris kule centre for
ukrainian and canadian folklore and the ukrainian museum of canada (alberta branch). this agreement officially increases the consortium of museums from three to four that would like to move all or part of their collections to the Jasper ave.
once it is completed. all of these museums either have problems with artifact preservation or visitor accessibility in their present locations ucama had a table at heritage days. books and paraphernalia were sold and the Jasper avenue building
project was advertised. ucama would like to thank the ukrainian museum of canada (alberta branch) for their assistance.Finally, ucama hosted the ukrainian day pancake breakfast at the ukrainian cultural heritage Village on august 8. Our
organization was very well received by customers and staff at the village and the breakfast was financially successful.

Photo Marco Levytsky - ACUA’s Children’s Craft Tents were very popular during Ukrainian Day 2010 this summer acua had the pleasure of representing our artists by displaying and selling their art cards and small prints in the ukrainian pavilion during heritage days at hawrelak park. additionally acua distributed informational material for other ukrainian organizations. it was a wonderful cultural exhibit, and to be a part of a diverse cultural community. august 8th marked ukrainian day 2010 at the ukrainian cultural heritage Village, and acua was there in full force with an art showcase and sale in the red barn which included edmonton area artists as well as five artists from the calgary area. we would like to thank the edmonton clinic of naturopathic medicine, dr. Janice dacyshyn for sponsoring our craft tent and judging by the line-ups of children and the popularity of the crafts, this is a feature worth holding every year. be on the lookout for our fall workshop brochure featuring a storytelling event of traditional scary ukrainian folktales that will leave you wanting more, along with unique art and folk art classes. acua strives to preserve traditional arts while offering something new and contemporary. Annual Ukrainian Day Festival, August 8, 2010 “Keep the Spirit Alive!”, the 2010 annual ukrainian day festival, was filled with
the sights and sounds of everything ukrainian in celebration of our rich culture. On august 8, about 3,200 albertans came to the ukrainian cultural heritage
Village for this annual event, a tradition that continues more than 30 years after it was initiated by the ucc-apc.
daria luciw presented greetings on behalf of the ucc-apc, as did Genia
leskiw, mla bonnyville-cold lake, on behalf of the Government of alberta. several other mlas, mps and municipal councillors were also present and
introduced by mc roman brytan.
the day opened with sunday services at the three historic churches at the
Village, and a pancake breakfast served by volunteers from the ukrainian canadian
archives and museum of alberta. throughout the day other activities
included the legion memorial service, presentation of the michael luchkovich
award, the ukrainian community showcase with children’s craft tents and
games superbly organized by the alberta council for the ukrainian arts, the village
market, entertainment in the courtyard, kozak Games, free wagon rides and tours to the historic village, and the ukrainian food court. the concert program
featured soloist stephania romaniuk, musical ensembles “Zavtra”, “the diamonds”, “Zbytochnyky” and the
“kupalo” ukrainian dance ensemble.
this year’s celebrations
also included a ceremony honouring the 150th
anniversary of the birth of dr. Josef Oleskow, who had
settled in canada in 1895, and sent the first group of ukrainian immigrants
to join him a year later. Very many descendants of this first group of families were present. along with other community
organizations and government representatives, ucc-apc president laid the wreath at the Oleskow monument.

hARvEy CENAIKo 2010 MIChAEL LUChKovICh
AWAR RECIPIENT Mr. Harvey Cenaiko was born in July 15, 1956 in Wakaw, SK to Ukrainian immigrants Dr. Frederick Cenaiko and Helen Manchur. Mr. Cenaiko was appointed as Chairperson of the National Parole Board on July 31, 2009, after having served as an MLA for Calgary-Buffalo, Government of Alberta (2001-08), Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security (2004-06). Some of the initiatives he spearheaded included the establishment of an Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, as well as the creation of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team to better coordinate initiatives tackling serious organized crime, gang and drug enforcement – the first of its kind in Canada. During his terms as MLA, Mr. Cenaiko chaired and led the work of a number of important bodies, including the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, the Child Welfare Act Review, and the Alberta Vehicle Theft Committee. Before entering public office, Mr. Cenaiko enjoyed a distinguished 25-year career as a member of the Calgary Police Service, retiring with the rank of Inspector with the Bureau of Community Policing Services. During his career, Mr. Cenaiko was awarded a Chief’s Commendation for his undercover police work, the Long Service Medal from the Government of Alberta, and the Exemplary Service Medal and Queen’s Jubilee Medal from the Government of Canada. Mr. Cenaiko’s community work has included many senior leadership roles, including Chair of the Aboriginal Health Council in Calgary, and President of the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Council.

Понад 350 осіб прийшли в Дім Української Молоді в Едмонтоні відсвяткувати 19 років незалежній Україні. Серед гостей свята, прекрасно організованого Едмонтонським Відділом Конґресу Українців Канади, були мер Едмонтону Стівен Мендел, депутати федерального парламенту Лорі Гон й Пітер Голдрінґ, провінційного – Пітер Санду, а також представники національних, провінційних й міських громадських організацій. У вступному слові Президент КУК-Едмонтон Люба Федущак наголосила, що українська громада повинна продовжити свою боротьбу й молитви за Україну та її демократичний розвиток. “Де була Україна 19 років тому?” це запитання Федущак повертає нас до думки як багато зроблено, в тому числі й українською діаспорою, з часу здобуття Україною незалежності, та як ще багато залишається зробити для того, щоби Україна досягла такого ж рівня розвитку який має Канада. Родзинкою цьогорічного святкування став православний хор і оркестр «Ластівка» з Саскатуну (мистецький керівник і дириґент Лаврентій Клопушак), якому аудиторія аплодувала стоячи, викликаючи на біс. Це перший
колектив, який удостоївся такої честі за усі попередні святкування едмонтонцями Дня Незалежності. Крім саскатунської “Ластівки”, блискуче виступили й едмонтонські колективи – український танцювальний ансамбль “Вогонь” (мистецькі керівники: Кен Качмар, Трися Кушнірук, Ґерет Несторович), український дитячий драматичний гурток “Джерело” при Організації Українок Канади в Едмонтоні (мистецький керівник Алла Семенко, музичний керівник Дмитро Руснак), гурт “Ворони” (Сузанна Линн, Даниїл Муринка, Кевин Джонс), а
також читець Оля Миць з твором невідомого автора “Україно Моя”. Головний промовець – Посол України в Канаді Ігор Осташ – подякував українській громаді за підтримку і вкотре пообіцяв порушити питання щодо відкриття Консульства України в Едмонтоні… Традиційно високий рівень організації громадських подій продемонстрував Едмонтонський Відділ КУК, й особисто його Президент Люба Федущак, за волонтерської підтримки Люби Бойко-Белл, Оксани Бокало, Євгена Горнофлюка, Стефана Романюка, Лідії Василин (ведуча Програми), а також Ігоря Подільського, Олексія Карпенка, Валерія Семенко, Романа Британа (Радіо world fm 101), газети «Українські Вісті» й Українських Католицької й Православної церков Едмонтону. Якою буде Україна ще через 19 років, у 2029? Це відомо тільки Господові Богу. Але немає сумнівів, що й українська громада Едмонтону докладатиме своїх зусиль для її розвитку й процвітання. to the betterment of all Canadians.
In 1936 Michael Luchkovich become the first Canadian MP of Ukrainian origin
and the spokesman for the Ukrainians in Canada.

Літні Пластові табори в Альберті 2010 р.
Юля МАСЮК, СУМ
СУМівський виховно відпочинковий та вишкільний табір “Кобзарі” імені митців, які боряться за людські права й волю України під закликом: “Служімо нашою творчістю справі українського народу!” успішно відбувся над
голубиним озером 18 липня до 1 серпня, 2010 р. Брали участь разом 66 дітей, 55 у виховно відпочинковому таборі й11 у вишкільному таборі. Підчас двох тижднів були понад 20 членів команди включаючи батьків із суменятками які долучилися на другий тиждень табору. Підчас двох тижднів діти мали нагоду займатися спортом, вивчити
безліч нових пісень, займатися рукоділлям й теренознавстом, вчитися про великих річниць, забавлятись в озері та відпочивати в свіжому повітрі. У додаток до цього, приїхали до нас в гості художник Валерій Семенко, Брайн
Черевик який розповідав про музику й інструменти, Едік Павленко який займався «Тай квон до» з дітьми, Богдан Тарасенко який займався драмою, Андрій Горняткевич та Ірка Тарнавська, які вчили дітей гри на бандурс, та наш
капелян отець Тарасенко який провадив літургію й дав гутірку. Ми дуже раді, що голоба крайової Управи СУМ подруга Оляна Ґрод з Торонто провадила вишкільний табір. Також приїхали Галя Котович, Ірка Єндрієвська, Ігор Брода, Дарія Луців, Андрій Гладишевський які говорили на різні теми з вишкільниками. Дякуємо також членам команди які приготували гутірки юнацтву й вишкільникам. У додаток,
діти старшого юнацтва й вишкільники мали нагоду поїхати до Едмонтону на концерт Гайдамків який дуже сподобався усім. Хочемо подякувати усім членам таборового комітету за співпрацю, батькам за довір`я й
підтримку і таборовикам за приємні пригоди і взаємини. До наступного СУМівського табору...Гартуйсь!

Іван СлиВинСьКий, ПлАСТ Цього літа я мав нагоду брати участь у трьох Пластових таборах, кожний унікальний і корисний. Перший табiр був Золота Булава (ЗБ), призначенa для молоді від 14-16 років, котрі є активними членами своїх Пластових станиць. Табір відбувся на
Пластові Січі біля Ґрафтон, Онтаріо. Ціль Золотої Булави є поглибити зацікавлення та ентузіязм до пластування, і дати нагоду учасникам розвинути свої провідницькі вміння. Перший етап табору включив зайняття спрямованi на навчання лідерських навичок, такi як плянування, розвязок конфліктів і багато іншi. Учасники перебрали більше і більше відповідальності у таборі. Ми зорганізували і пeрeвели цілоденний спортoвий турнір, лисячий біг, теренову гру, і змаг пластового знання. Ми збудували польoву кухню і варили для себе. Хоч ми багато працювали - ми не тільки вчилися і досконалювали своє знання і вміння провідництва, ми зустріли нових друзів з різних частин Північнoї Америки.
Другий табір був курінний табір канойкартсва в Лак Ла Біш, Альберта. Цей табір був дуже приємний, і я мав нагоду вправляти все що навчився на Золотій Булаві. Всі юнаки котрі відбули ЗБ (було семеро з Едмонтону) відповідали за таборові зайняття продовж одного дня. Крім того, я мав можливість поліпшити своє вміння канойкартства, і було багато часу щоб краще познайомитися з друзями. Останний табір літа був новацький табір (табір для 6-11 літних дітей), де я був братчиком (помічник та провідник зайнять). Тут була ще одна нагода вправляти то що навчився на Золотій Булаві, беручи ролю у плянуванню і проведенню зайнять для дітей. Я помагав у спортoвих зайнять, приготoвив паспорти та картки ідентичности (таборова темa була Олімпійськi ігри), i помагав плянивати
танець і кінцеві зайняття. Цей табір дав досвід у працю з дітьми. Як Пластун, я маю багато можливостей вчитися і дозрівати. Дружби котрі почалися тут будуть сильніше рости і знання/вміння котрі тут виробив, будуть корисні мені і в щоденному житті. Пласт дає велике задоволення!

GoALS oF ThE UCC hoLoDoMoR EDUCATIoN CoMMITTEE:
1. To promote and support the inclusion of the Holodomor/Ukrainian genocide into the school curriculum of each province at the appropriate
K-12 grade level.
2. To promote and support the inclusion of the topic of the Holodomor/Ukrainian genocide in community
Ukrainian schools at the appropriate grades.
3. To promote and support the Commemoration of the Holodomor, a Holodomor Memorial Day, at the K-12 grade level in school jurisdictions across the country.
4. To conduct research and development to ensure that the most effective teaching methods and latest
findings are included in the teaching resources on the Holodomor.
5. To share expertise with educational institutions, school boards, and ministries of education regarding
curriculum, institutional approaches, and learning resources.
6. To share expertise with community groups seeking to make presentations to educational institutions,
school boards, and ministries of education regarding curriculum, institutional approaches,
and learning resources.
7. To develop and distribute teaching materials and resources on the Holodomor and support such
development and distribution.
8. To facilitate in providing teacher in-service and training of teacher in-services on the topic of the
Holodomor across the country.
