Task 3Venice is the world-famous water city. It has the characteristic of perfectly combining luxury

with profundity in terms of the harmonious relationship between rivers, bridges and the city. Apart from the wonderful network of rivers which Venice boasts, the city’s lanes are also worth seeing. They are both mysterious and unpredictable. Sometimes you will walk into a lane with a dead end. If this happens, you’re advised not to indulge in self-consolation or get angry because you can hear and see every now and then what is typical of Venice. As time passes by, Venice’s luxury is being eroded, but its profundity is becoming extremely attractive.

Task 4If you go abroad for the first time, you’re probably both excited and a little scared about

leaving, and that’s normal. Missing what’s familiar is natural but pretty soon new places and people will become familiar, too. You can adjust if you are struggling with being away from home. Become comfortable in your new environment by getting involved and taking part in activities you like. Stick around on the weekends so you can get to know people, and have new experiences. Don’t always think about being away from home. Find out what you like about your campus, and focus on that. Keep in contact with your loved ones from home, but make sure you’re not giving them most of your attention.Questions: 16. What will a person feel when he first goes abroad?17. How can a person become comfortable in a new environment?18. What should a person do on weekends to get to know people?19. What shouldn’t a person always think about in a new environment?20. Whom should a person keep in contact with when he is in a foreign country?

Part Ⅰ Listening Comprehension

Task 1 1. W: I feel so much stressed and always forget things nowadays.

M: You need to have a few days off and a travel.Q: What does the man advise the woman to do?

2. W: I’m very upset for my failure in the exam. M: Don’t be that. It’s not the end of the world.Q: What’s the man’s attitude toward the woman’s failure?

3. W: I often feel life is meaningless. M: Come on. Try to be optimistic. Q: What does the man mean?

4. M: How are you getting on with your life? W: So far, so good, though I have many difficulties to deal with.Q: What kind of person is the woman?

5. M: How do you like DINK (Double Income No Kids) family? W: Sometimes I think it’s not bad.Q: What does the woman think of DINK family?

Task 2Conversation 1 W: Tom, it seems that life is so boring, and sometimes I feel life is meaningless.M: Why? I think life is colorful. W: Colorful? I don’t think so. M: I do think it. I love life. Why aren’t you happy with life?W: Every day we must work hard to earn money, and then we use up what we’ve earned. Then

we work hard again, and then… What is the sense of doing these endlessly?M: But I think this is just the meaning of life. W: What could I do then?M: If I were you, I would cast off all your anxieties. Questions:6. What does the woman feel about life?7. What does the man advise the woman to do?

Conversation 2 M: My cousin can’t go to university this year, because he failed in the college entrance

examination again.

Page 8: Unit 1 Traveling Arounddownload.dutpbook.com/download/世纪英语综合练习II第四版答案.pdfUnit 1 Traveling Around ... Venice is the world-famous water city. It has the characteristic

《世纪英语综合教程·综合练习Ⅱ》参考答案及听力原文

W: What a pity! What does he plan to do now?M: My aunt asked him to have one more year’s education in the high school and prepare for the

next year’s entrance examination.W: Does your cousin agree?M: He is hesitating now. W: I don’t think it’s good. You know, university is not the only place where you can obtain

knowledge. And it is not the only way to achieve success in one’s ilfe.M: I think so. I will have a talk with him.Questions:8. What are the two speakers talking about?9. What does the woman think of college education?10. What will the man do with his cousin?

Task 3 The first step for the accomplishment of every act is the attitude of the person who wants to do

something with his life. If you are the type of person who is always optimistic and has faith in your strengths, then half of the job is already taken care of. It is quite difficult to change the way you think or how you perceive reality and all the things around you. It is useless if your friends keep pushing you to see life in another way, to be always optimistic, to laugh more and always think at the “pink” version of things. You get annoyed by everybody giving you pieces of advice. It is only you who can decide to have this great change of personality. Not only will you see things from another perspective but life itself will come to be different, meaning more exciting and more interesting.

Task 4Every age has its beauty and one should always know how to live to the full every aspect of

it. When you are a child you spend all your time playing and you don’t have anything to worry about; as the years pass you become more concerned with whatever goes around you, with the problems you have to take care of. You should always keep your sense of humor and never forget to smile. Not only the smile makes you more beautiful but it also makes you see life with other eyes. You only have one life and you have to live it to the full every day, as if it were the last day of your existence so as not to get the point in which you are sorry you didn’t know how to live.Questions: 16. What do people do when they are children?17. What are the people more concerned with as the years pass?18. What should people always do in their life?19. Why should people always keep smile?20. How should people live their life every day?

W: It can cause air pollution and make people cough and shed tears. Q: What is the topic of the dialogue?3. M: You want to see me, manager? W: Yes, Mr. Lee. You’re not supposed to smoke in the office, or you’ll be fined. Q: What will happen to Mr. Lee if he keeps smoking in the office?4. W: The automobiles are making a lot of loud noise. M: How about moving some factories to suburbs?W: It’s a good idea! There is a low population density in suburbs so that the harm to people will

be slight. However, it brings great inconvenience.Questions:6. What are they talking about?7. What suggestion does the man give?

Conversation 2W: Oh, no, no!M: What’s wrong with you?W: The noise from that construction site next door is driving me crazy.M: Is that guy drilling outside your window again?W: Again? He never stops. It’s so bad that I ever hear drills in my sleep.M: Why don’t you take the rest of the afternoon off?W: I can’t. I’ve got to turn in the report today.M: Oh! They say bad noise can affect your health. It causes hearing damage.W: Even worse than that! Studies show that high noise levels affect the heart, too. I have to

complain to the person in charge of the construction site the first thing tomorrow morning to make them reduce the noise.

Questions:8. What makes the woman crazy?9. Why doesn’t she take the rest of the afternoon off?10. What will she do tomorrow morning?

Task 3Scientists have spent many years trying to find out the main stream climate. They have

found that temperatures really are rising rapidly. The world’s temperatures are closely connected to global warming. The land is 1.6 degrees warmer than that in 1950s. What causes global warming? Scientists say that global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Companies involved in oil and other industries produce great greenhouse gas emission. They warn the public that green house gases could have a disastrous on the world. So it makes sense to reduce the carbon dioxide created by fossil fuels.

Task 4PM 2.5 refers to the fine airborne particles below 2.5 micrometers that are considered

extremely dangerous to people’s health as they go deeper into the lungs than the larger particles that exist in the air. To monitor PM 2.5 is just step one. The ultimate mission, to reduce the danger

caused by PM 2.5, will take at least 20 years. It’s much more difficult to deal with fine airborne particles than to deal with bigger ones, dust pollution and sulfur dioxide pollution. Studies on the causes of PM 2.5 have been under way in China for about a decade. Coal burning and vehicle exhaust are the major causes, but in different regions their contribution to the pollution varies.

Air pollution is a regional problem. Even if one city takes care of its own emissions, it still cannot escape the pollutants discharged by power plants in the neighborhood. But If we apply stricter standards for oil quality, vehicle waste emissions and gasoline station facilities, we will achieve some success. Questions: 16. Why is PM 2.5 considered to be very danger to people’s health?17. How long will it take to reduce the danger of PM 2.5?18. Which is more difficult to deal with, fine airborne particles or bigger ones?19. What are the major causes of PM 2.5?20. Can one city solve the problem of air pollution all by itself?

Task 3Copyright protection holds that original works, either in the form of paintings, photographs,

sound recordings, motion pictures, or computer programs are the property of the authors and creators. Laws protecting this fundamental right have been enacted in many countries. Any copying, distributing or adapting copyright-protected works without permission of the owners is considered illegal. Despite the establishment of a similar law, copyright abuse still exists. People fear that too much emphasis on the exclusive rights enjoyed by the individual creators would harm the public interest. However, the weak copyright consciousness among the public, in the long run, is detrimental to the creativity of authors and cultivation of a fair market economy. As a responsible international “stakeholder”, China should attach more importance to the copyright issue.

Task 4Online and mobile viewing is increasing—about 40 million users say they only watch

entertainment online. 64 percent of Chinese Web users watch popular TV dramas via the Internet

and 30 percent use it as the only source of viewing. 80 percent of Chinese viewers enjoy watching TV online. About 90 percent of young viewers prefer to access entertainment on the Internet as they can replay or skip any part they want. 70 percent of young people have ceased spending a large chunk of time on TV for a while, and are only savoring shorter video clips instead. They enjoy the flexibility of watching online. Around three quarters of the people say online and mobile viewing has freed them up, as they can use big chunks of time to do some more important things. However, about 25 percent of people dislike online and mobile viewing because it can also take over their free time and reduce the time interacting with others. Once they search some programs, it will be hard to turn their eyes away from them. Questions: 1. How many users watch entertainment only online?2. How many Web users watch popular TV dramas via the Internet? 3. How many people use the Internet as the only source of viewing?4. How many Chinese viewers enjoy watching TV online? 5. How many young people stop spending a large chunk of time on TV?

Task 3 Every one of us wants to achieve success in our career. Difficulties, stress and failure,

however, are inevitable in the pursuit of success and are also an important lesson in our life. People have different ways to tackle these problems. Some people think stress is a big barrier on their way to success and failure is a shame and pity in that they have made a lot of effort but tried in vain. Other people hold the view that failure is the mother of success. Life is full of hardships and obstacles. The only thing to do is face them bravely with determination and confidence. We should be optimistic about difficulties, stress and failure, because we can gain more experience and learn a lot from them. Moreover, these problems help us make better preparation for our goals. It is necessary for us to take a correct attitude towards them and never lose our heart. Only in this way can these negative factors play a positive role in our life and benefit us.

Task 4 People will have stress and obstacles that might prevent them from achieving their goals in

life. These stress and obstacles include family commitments, financial costs, entry requirements, health needs and the knowledge they need to demonstrate to be offered a place. In fact, it is not necessary to have everything. Instead, people are supposed to create a practical plan on how and when they can resolve these problems. If all these obstacles make it look like their dream will never come true, try to think of other choices. Be flexible and be prepared to compromise. For example, go to a different university from your first choice, take up another position if the one you are having now is not satisfactory. When people have stress or obstacles, don’t keep them to people themselves. Speak to their friends, family and professionals to help decide what is really a realistic goal for them. Sometimes it is not the dream that matters, just the timing. Questions: 16. What may people have that may prevent them from achieving their goals in life?17. What are people supposed to do for resolving the problems they have?18. What should people do if obstacles make them unable to realize their dreams?19. What shouldn’t people do if they have stress and obstacles?20. Whom are people advised to speak to for solving the problems?

Task 3We celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. As for Father’s Day, we should know

how it originated. It occurred to Sonora Smart Dodd in Washington in 1909 after Mother’s Day that why there was no Father’s Day, while Mother’s Day was celebrated. Her father was a single parent who reared his six children after their mother’s early death, which impressed them much although many years had passed. So she wrote a sincere letter to the state government to promote Father’s Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was postponed to the third Sunday of June. Father’s Day, although celebrated first by foreigners, can be also done across China because we are brought up under the protection from our fathers as well as mother.

Task 4We usually sing a song like this: “When I was young, I took a seat on father’s shoulders.

Father is just the ladder leading me to the sky; father is just the bull leading the cart”. Compared with gentle mother’s love, father’s love is more profound. If maternal love is refreshing spring water, paternal love shall be lofty mountains. When Father supports the family with his strong arms for the dignity of being a man, he shows his profound paternal love as well.

The third Sunday in June is Father’s Day. On that day you should say to your father gratefully “Dear daddy, thank you!” You should center yourself on your learning. To learn your subjects well is the best return to your father. Questions: 16. Why can a father lead us to the sky according to a song we often sing? 17. What is father’s love like compared with mother’s love?18. What do people often compare father’s love to? 19. When does Father’s Day fall on? 20. What is your best gift to your father according to the speaker?
