History of the USCGC Sherman Association

Several years ago I started a CGC Sherman website which grew slowly, I concentrated on finding my own

crew members through existing contacts, also a slow process, I had learned about researching my genealogy

using Ancestry.com. Databases. I saw that the "Myfamily website's" would make a perfect ship's crew website.

Basically a photo album site with contact pages for each member and a simple blog. When the website was up

and running soon the subject of a Sherman reunion came up, We were wondering why after almost 40 years

we hadn't heard of even one reunion of Sherman crew members.

In the fall of 2008 I decided to send every crewmember a Christmas card with an appeal to help plan a reunion.

As luck would have it on my old shipmates EN3 Roy Martinsen responded and volunteered to help me find all

of our crew members. We made the excellent working partnership, I loved searching databases for telephone

numbers and addresses, and Roy got a kick out of making hundreds of cold calls to likely suspects. You never

realize how many people have exactly the same name, .We narrowed down the possibilities by estimating the

ages and hometowns to search. Each day Roy would call me and tell me all of wrong person funny stories and

success stories after making all those phone calls. In the end we found almost 100 of our old crew members. It

was an amazing feat of detective work after 40 years.

Soon the "USCGC Sherman Association, was Incorporated as a non-stock corporation in Maryland, Appointed

officers, wrote bylaws, and organized a reunion in Plymouth Massachusetts for September of 2009. The

majority of our 1968 through 1971 crew members still live in the northeastern part United States. Sherman was

originally home ported in Boston Massachusetts. Which contributed to having over 100 attendees. Our Capt.

Paul Lutz, attended and spoke at our banquet dinner ... By all accounts the reunion was a resounding success!

History of the USCGC Sherman Association (cont.)

Well it's been three years since the Plymouth 2009 reunion. A number of our members wanted a another reunion

soon. I kept hearing "we're not getting any younger". In May of 2011 one of our West Coast members, Roger

Lumbao, put together a "mini reunion." Hosted at Doak Walker's famous "All weather ships" reunion in Reno

Nevada on May 15 to coincide with the Sherman change of command ceremony in Alameda several of our mem-

bers had been invited to attend.

I originally planned next Sherman reunion (2012) in Baltimore Maryland, a nice venue with CG Curtis Bay Yard,

historic ships in the inner Harbor, USCGC Taney, the lightship Chesapeake. I live nearby so planning would be

easier The decommissioning of two of Sherman's sister 378's and her being transferred to San Diego caused us

rethink our reunion plans. We are currently on track the a great Sherman reunion in 2012!

We found out from the first time around, planning a successful reunion much bigger job than you first realize.

The first time we've only invited the first four years of crew members, Now we are inviting 43 years of crew

members! Not sure how many of you will attend But I'm confident it will be rewarding for all and well worth the

effort! Ideas, comments, support, teamwork, participation—All Welcome! ~ Semper Paratus

Why San Diego? - Recent events, specifically the decommissioning of three of Sherman's sister 378's (Hamilton, Chase and Dallas) and the Sherman being trans-ferred to a new home port of San Diego California (to take their place?) , It seemed like the handwriting was on the wall, time was running out, and forced us to rethink our reunion plans. We had long talked about a West Coast reunion for the basic pur-pose of seeing the old girl one more time. Maybe even get a tour. More about the

Sherman tour at the website as the plan comes together.

Why Holiday Inn Bayside? - The Holiday is very experienced and possibly the most popular military reunion hotel in San Diego, Great pricing, complementary Hospitality room and Welcome reception, Good location, and they had a opening in September to host our 2012 Sherman reunion. See page 14.

When? - We are planning on the Sherman Being in port in September. We signed a contract with Holiday Inn Bayside for Aug31 - Sept 3 2012. See the detailed itinerary on pages 10-13

Who going to be there? - All 42 years of Sherman crew members are invited! Let us know early if you plan to attend. Planning a successful reunion is all about knowing how many people we are planning for. I will be publishing a Who’s Attending list pe-riodically on the website and with newsletter updates. Another reason to register early. See next page.

Web! - A Sherman Reunion website as well as this newsletter was created to be a ef-fective communication and planning tool in creating the best possible Sherman reun-ion in 2012! Please register at the website today to stay in the loop for news and spread the word and invite your fellow Sherman shipmates

This list of “Planning to Attend” came from the Face Sherman Reunion Event page, the Sherman Association website and the Sherman Shipmates website. I will be up-dating the newsletter including this list as needed. We have reserved a block of 50 rooms. As you can see we have 58 people planning to attend. I don’t expect that entire number to show but consider an additional 48 crew mem-bers said they MAY attend .. And then we are just starting the publicity via this newsletter and the various Military / Veterans magazines. So if you are serious about attending please register ASAP. Early in this process we may be able to increase the number of rooms. The block of reservations will be held until August 10th. Typically many people wait to the last week or two to register making it very difficult to estimate our true needs. If you plan on attending the reunion let me know. Better yet just go ahead and register at the hotel! It’s no risk, you can cancel up to a few days before the reunion starts. Take the poll “attending or not” on the Face book Event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/173210306085481/ Join the mail list on the Sherman Association Website http://www.uscgcshermanassociation.com/ If you have any questions about the reunion or the Sherman Association website please email me at: [email protected] Thanks! ~ Richard Ames

Associate Annual dues. $10

Reunions and Dues

The Sherman reunion will be held at locations and times determined by a vote of the Association membership present at each annual reunion. Attendance at the annual reunion is open to all members and their invited guests. The reunion takes place over three to four days allowing ample time for socializing, a business meet-ing of the members, tours of the local sites and a gala Banquet on the last night. Member’s pay their own ex-penses (room, food, travel) and the activity fee charged to each person attending covers activities at the reun-ion, administrative costs, hospitality and meeting rooms and refreshments. Making the reunion self supporting keeps the membership dues down and makes planning future events possible and more flexible.

Mission Statement of the USCGC Sherman Association

We are Veterans of the USCGC Sherman. A Organization incorporated

in the State Maryland and founded on January 1, 2009

Our Mission is to bring our crew members together in friendship, respect, and recognition.

And bring awareness to the Coast Guard the USGC Sherman and its Crew and Officers.

As a group we are dedicated to all of our US Coast Guard shipmates

and are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by Coast Guard members

during their service on the USCGC Sherman.

We intend to see that the USCG and the Sherman’s history

is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere.

We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.
