How legend has itIt was high noon in the small western town. The young man on the wagon was hot and thirsty. He stopped the wagon in front of the bank. Two men were sitting outside on the steps.

“Howdy,” said the young man. “Can I get a cold drink somewhere?”“Try the saloon, son.”“Just a minute, stranger,” said the taller of the two men.His clothes were old and he had a big hole in the back of his pants.

He wore a silver gun on his right hip. Slowly he walked over to the wagon.“What have you got there in the wagon?”“Canvas,” answered the young man, “For tents!”“Yeah. Well, we don’t need any tents here, stranger.”The other man got up from the steps and smiled at the man with the

silver gun.“You’re right, Hank,” he said. “You don’t need a tent.” He pointed at the

hole in the man’s pants. “You need a new pair of pants!”The tall man looked angry but then they both started to laugh. The

young man laughed, too. A little while later he went to the saloon for a beer.

The town was Walnut Creek, California. The year was 1850. The two men were gold diggers. The young man’s name was Levi.

While he was sitting in the saloon, Levi suddenly had an idea. “Pants! That’s it! I’ve got it!” He ran wildly into the street shouting

“Pants! Everyone needs pants!”When he returned to San Francisco he gave a local tailor his canvas and

asked him to make him some pants from the canvas.“What name is it?” asked the tailor.“Strauss. Levi Strauss.”

The realityThat, of course, is how legend has it. But how did the fi rst jeans really start

and what did Levi Strauss really have to do with it?Levi Strauss, his mother and two sisters left Germany in 1847 and went to

live with his half brothers in New York. They were in the clothes business, and in 1853 Levi travelled to San Francisco to open up a west-coast branch for them. After years of hard work, he was selling clothing, pillows, blankets and underwear to small stores all over the west.

In 1872, Levi received a letter from Jacob Davis, a tailor in Nevada, who had come up with a great new idea. In an effort to make pants stronger for his customers, he had added metal rivets to them. This had become a great success, so Jacob wanted to patent the idea. But he did not have enough money. That was why he needed Levi’s help: Levi would pay for the patent and then the two of them could go into business together. As Davis put it in the letter, “We could make a very large amount of money.”

Levi never missed an opportunity and in 1873 he and Davis received the patent they wanted. And soon they made – and sold – the fi rst pairs of Levi jeans.

Levi Strauss became an important fi gure in California and gave some of his money to the University of California to help poor students. He lived a long and wealthy life and died in 1902 at the age of 72. But his jeans had a remarkable effect on lifestyles all over the world.

Jeans hit youth cultureAmerican soldiers introduced jeans to Europeans during the Second World War. And it was not long before ordinary workers were wearing them at work.

But it wasn’t until the late 50s that jeans started to have an effect on youth culture. It came together with Rock ‘n’ Roll. Elvis Presley wore fl ashy clothes on stage but at home he wore a T-shirt and jeans day in, day out. More and more teenagers began to wear jeans and they liked them real tight; skin tight in fact. James Dean, a symbol of the new, young generation made a fi lm called Rebel without a Cause. It told of a teenage boy who had trouble with his parents. They simply did not understand him. And all the way through the fi lm, Jimmy wore blue jeans. Teenagers everywhere identifi ed with him. And they sent out a message to their parents “You don’t like our music, you don’t like our friends and you don’t like our clothes!”

Youngsters listened to Elvis, watched James Dean and danced the night away in tight blue jeans. Girls had ponytails, boys put grease in their hair and the young generation rebelled. Heaven only knows what Levi Strauss would have thought.
