    )istorical versions of the Divinum *fficium

    The ivinum !""i#ium was the o""i#ial prayer o" the oman -atholi# -hur#h "or at least 1300

    years, until 141, when it was signi"i#antly #hanged to The +iturgy of the )ours. This

    programlet as #on#eived by Laszlo Kiss was partially a devi#e enabling one to pray the !""i#e

    easily, and partially a histori#al do#ument to visually show the #hanges in the last "ew

    hundred years. These purposes are maintained by the ivinum !""i#ium $ro%e#t sin#e 'ugust

    2011, with the intent that the so"tware and website should be usable and histori#ally a##urate.

    This pro%e#t shows how the daily !""i#e was #olle#ted "rom the same psalms, le#tions, hymns,

    versi#les and responsories "or the di""erent versions.)

    The pre Tridentine ,onasticversion is an attempt to illustrate the 5enedi#tine

    5reviary, as it is des#ribed in the egula o" *t 5enedi#t, with the e6#eption that "or

    la#k o" resour#es only 4 lessons are in#luded "or *undays and 7easts instead o" 12

    lessons. *ee detailsbelow

    The version ordered a"ter the Council of Trent, by $ope *t. $ius 8, whi#h e6#ept "or

    the ever in#reasing number o" "easts in the $roprium *an#torum was un#hanged until

    the 20th -entury. This Tridentine version was based on the many #enturies be"ore

    printed books, there"ore the ma%ority o" psalms were prayed in 9attins, Lauds, and

    8espers. The little hours #ontained the same psalm 11: everyday, whi#h wasmemorized by heart and #ould be prayed without a book, at the little hours. *unday

    9atutinum #ontained 1: psalms, and the weekday mattins #ontained 12 psalms. Lauds

    and 8espers were #onsiderably longer, due to the length o" o" the psalm and their

    su""ragia. The 7easts o" *aints o""ered some relie" in the number o" psalms. Those

    9attins #onsisted o" 4 psalms only whi#h broke the rule o" the re;uired 130 psalms a

    week. The number o" 7estive !""i#es #ame to e6#eed the number o" "erial *unday

    !""i#es, when more than two thirds o" the days were 7estive !""i#es.

    The Trident %-7version uses the original 130 #alendar, the Trident %&%version

    The %&6 1ew Calendarversion implements the 2004 permanent #alendar. It uses the

    was and is to show that the #hanges published in 1433 and 14>0 are not more than the

    #hanges whi#h were made in 1411 by ivino '""latu. In all #hanges the reason was to

    simpli"y and shorten the !""i#e.

    -estive 3ffices for both the ridentine, and the Divino Afflatu versions are similar, ecept that in the ridentine version, -easts of

    semiduple rank and above use the -estive psalms, which is three nocturns each of three psalms for 8atins, with a slightly different set for

    holy men and holy women, with the Sundays psalms from the )salter for the rest of the hours. Simple 3ffices from the proper of the

    Saints have only one nocturn in the ridentine version with the psalms of the -eria.
