  1984  

  Our  ages:    Abuelo:  68;2    Mónica:  10;2    Begoña:  8;11  &  9    Caterina:  6;9  

  ~7  hours  of  naturally  occurring  conversaAons  during  mealAmes.  

  Abuelo  was  from  Spain,  monolingual  in  Spanish,  but  lived  in  Mexico  for  about  35  years  thereby  granAng  him  mulAple  linguisAc  resources.

Discussion  &  Future  Research  •  The  linguisAc  resources  available  to  each  person  in  a  family  where  a  heritage  language  is  spoken  are  different,  releasing  the  insAtuAon  of  family  from  ‘old  structures’  (Coupland  2007,  p.  29)  

•  There  is  very  liile  aienAon  to  how  some  members  within  the  same  family  are  more  ‘insider’  or  more  ‘outsider’  than  others  within  the  same  family  

•  Next  steps—how  does  this  help  us  to  beier  understand  the  global  picture  of  mulA-­‐sited  mulA-­‐cultural  families  where  HLs  are  spoken?  

•  And  (how)  can  these  understandings  help  inform  the  educaAon  of  HL  teachers?
