Re-Purposing Websites for Retrospective Miscue Analysis By Diane Dalenberg (EDCT 552) GSO2 Candidate for Master’s in Educational Leadership with a Concentration in Reading and Language www.astorybeforebed.com A Story Before Bed offers over 500 books in their Bookstore for you to select and then record. These digital picture books act like real books, with the possibility of using a computer’s webcam to record someone reading the story. For miscue analysis this was particularly helpful because of the following qualities: 1. The teacher can do a miscue analysis at any time now that the text has been recorded. 2. Record using an iPad or computer with a webcam and playback at any time with or without student. 3. Eye movement of the reader can be tracked, to see if they are using picture clues for example. 4. Playback allows students to analyze their own reading. 5. A discussion between teacher and student can be captured as part of an alternative assessment. 6. Emailing a recorded story to someone is very easy once it is saved on your Recordings shelf. A monthly subscription costs $9.99 for unlimited number of recordings. Several stories are free but the recordings expire after 24 hrs.

www.astorybeforebed.comA Story Before Bed offers over 500 books in their Bookstore for you to select and then record. These digital picture books act

like real books, with the possibility of using a computer’s webcam to record someone reading the story. For miscue analysis this was particularly helpful because of the following qualities:

1. The teacher can do a miscue analysis at any time now that the text has been recorded.2. Record using an iPad or computer with a webcam and playback at any time with or

without student.3. Eye movement of the reader can be tracked, to see if they are using picture clues for

example.4. Playback allows students to analyze their own reading. 5. A discussion between teacher and student can be captured as part of an alternative

assessment.6. Emailing a recorded story to someone is very easy once it is saved on your Recordings

shelf.

A monthly subscription costs $9.99 for unlimited number of recordings. Several stories are free but the recordings expire after 24 hrs.

CONS:- Maximum recording time of each page is 3 minutes so if discussions about a page are longer than that, they

are cut. - You may pause recording during the book but you will need to flip through all the pages of the book to stop the

recording so it can be archived through synchronization.- You may only turn pages forwards, not backwards.

- Students find it challenging to not be able to sort books by reading level. It is possible to look up levels of titles on the internet.

www.raz-kids.comRaz-Kids has a bookroom with leveled shelves using Fountas and Pinell’s guided reading system from A to Z. The books act like real

books and can be read with or without audio support. Any book may be recorded orally as a Practice Recording and saved for the teacher or student to review. Benchmark Books or passages have been pre-identified at each of the 27 levels and there is an ability to utilize the Scorecard. 6 types of miscues may be identified and coded with this Running Record Scorecard, as the recording is playing. More interestingly, when students listen to their own Practice Recording or Benchmark Book recording and track the text, they are able analyze their miscues themselves, which prompts metacognition. A typical miscue analysis discussion is more productive when student and teacher can actually go back and track the text and oral recording. There is also the possibility of getting a triangulated view of a child’s reading by: scoring the oral reading with the Running Record Scorecard, recording the student’s retell of the story and scoring it on a rubric, and by administering the comprehension quiz, which not only provides feedback on incorrect answers but also on the specific skills that each question in the quiz covered. For miscue analysis this was particularly helpful because of the following qualities:

1. When listening to a child’s Practice Recording of a book, notes can be written for the student or the teacher as far as strengths, challenges, and goals are concerned, and then referenced before the next session.

2. It is interesting to be able to categorize the types of miscues using the 6 different “error” types, even though it doesn’t fit perfectly with the graphophonic, syntactic, and the semantic cueing systems.

3. Students more readily reflect on their own reading ability and seem to “revalue” themselves as readers when they are able to rerecord their reading after a miscue analysis session.

4. This site offers audio support with highlighted text for tracking support, so students may practice listening to a fluent model reading the story. Bookroom with Levels A to Z Example of a non-fiction book on Anicent Egypt

Running Record Scorecard

A year-long class subscription costs $89.95 for up to 36 student users.CONS:

- When using the Running Record Scorecard, the Accuracy score needs to be discounted, because analyzing the types of miscues rather than the number of errors is more important.

- There is an incentive component offered called Raz-Rockets where students earn points to create their own rocket ship, but this feature may be unchecked so students will then only see an accumulation of points for various tasks.
