    SCIENCE AND THEAkashic Field

    Book review

[Published by Inner TraditionsRochester, Vermont, 2006; $14.95]

Ervin Laszlo has published aremarkable new book of the above title. As you will notice on the front cover Dr.Deepak Chopra gives it a highrecommendation.

While a student of MadameBlvatskys Secret Doctrine might findthemselves slightly uncomfortable with

the phrase Akashic Field, whenconsidering HPBs use of the wordAkasha, this is, after all, a minorinconvenience considering the excellenceof the volume. It is user-friendly.

Great portions of the volume arestudies in the mysteries of Karmic LAW. yet Karma is neither mentioned norindexed.

With Science, An Integral theory ofEverything is a little like the fable ofsearching for the four-leaf-clover.Laszlo gives a brilliant description of thesearch

Dr. Deepak Chopra says of thebook:

The most brilliant, comprehensive, and intellectuallysatisfying integral theory of everythingthat I have ever read. . . . . transcendsthe vision of Darwin, Newton, Einstein, the quantum pioneers, and many otherscientific giants of history.

A quote from the book willillustrate the point:

In the beginning of the twentiethcentury, the much neglected but nowmore and more discovered geniusNikola Tesla, the father of moderncommunication technologies, spoke ofan original medium that fills spaceand compared it to Akasha, the light-carrying ether. In his unpublished 1907paper Mans greatest achievement, hewrote that this original medium, a kindof force field, becomes matterwhenprana, cosmic energy, acts on it,and when the action ceases, mattervanishes and returns to Akasha. Sincethis medium fills all of space, everything that takes place in space canbe referred to it . The curvature of ,

Space, said Tesla, which was putforward at the time by Einstein, is notthe answer.

However,, by the end of the firstdecade of the twentieth century, physicistsadopted Einsteins mathematically

elaborated four-dimensional curvedspace-time and, with the exception of afew maverick theoreticians, refused toconsider any concept of a space-fillingether, medium, or force field. Teslasinsight fell into disrepute, and then intooblivion. Today it is revived. Bohm,Puthoff, and a small but growing group ofscientists are rediscovering the role ofinformation in nature, and locatingnatures information field in the quantumvacuum, the much discussed if as yetimperfectly understood energy sea thatfills cosmic space. At the beginning ofthe twentieth century, space was alreadybelieved to be filled with an invisibleenergy field the luminiferous etherthat produces friction when bodies movethrough it and thus slows their motion. But when such friction failed tomaterialize in the famous Michelson-Morley experiments, the ether wasremoved from the physicists worldpicture. The absolute vacuum spacethat is truly empty when not occupied bymattertook its place.

However, the cosmic vacuumturned out to be far from empty space. In the grand unified theories (GUTs)developed in the second half of thetwentieth century, the concept of thevacuum transformed into the mediumthat carries the zero-point field, orZPF. (The name derives from the factthat in this field energies prove to bepresent even when all classical forms ofenergy vanish; at the absolute zero oftemperature.) In subsequent unifiedtheories, the roots of all natures fieldsand forces were ascribed to themysterious energy sea known as theunified vacuum.

In the 1960s Paul Dirac showedthat fluctuations in fermion fields

(fields of matter particles) produce apolarization of the ZPF of the vacuum, whereby the vacuum in turn affects theparticles mass, charge, spin, or angularmomentum. At around the same time,Andreei Sakharov proposed thatrelativistic phenomena (the slowingdown of clocks and the shrinking ofyardsticks near the speed of light) arethe result of effects induced in thevacuum due to the shielding of thezero-point field by charged particles. This is a revolutionary idea, since inthis concept the vacuum is more thanrelativity theorys four-dimensionalcontinuum: it is not just the geometryof space-time, but a real physical fieldproducing real physical effects.

    The physical interpretation of the

vacuum in terms of the zero-point fieldwas reinforced in the 1970s, when PaulDavis and William Unruh put forward ahypothesis that differentiates betweenuniform and accelerated motion in thezero-point field. Uniform motionwould not disturb the ZPF, leaving itisotropic (the same in all directions),whereas accelerated motion wouldproduce a thermal radiation that breaksopen the fields all directionalsymmetry.

Harold Puthoff, Bernard Haisch, and collaborators produced asophisticated theory according to whichthe inertial force, the gravitationalforce, and even mass are consequencesof the the interaction of chargedparticles with the ZPF. Puthoff alsonoted that electrons orbiting atomicnuclei constantly radiate energy, so thatthey would move progressively closerto the given nucleus were it not that the

quantum of energy they absorb fromthe vacuum offsets the energy lost dueto their orbital motion.

Even the stability of our planet inits orbit around the Sun derives fromvacuum-energy inputs. As Earthpursues its orbital path, it losesmomentum; given a constant loss ofmomentum, the gravitational field ofthe Sun in the absence of an influxenergy from the ZPF would over

come the centrifugal force that pushesEarth around its orbit and Earth wouldspiral into the Sun. This means that inaddition to inertia, gravity, and mass, the very stability of both atoms andsolar systems is due to interaction withthe zero-point fieldof the vacuum.

Although much remains to bediscovered about the quantum vacuum,it is already clear that it is a superdensecosmic medium. It carries light, andall the universal forces of nature.Pressure waves may propagate throughit, traversing the universe from one endto the other. This is the finding of theGerman mathematical physicistHartmut Mueller, who claims that theobserved dimension of all entities, fromatoms to galaxies, is determined by

interaction with density-pressure wavespropagating in the vacuum. Accordingto his global scaling theory, theuniverse is dimensionally limited: onthe lower end of the dimensionalhorizons, matter density is the greatest, and on the upper end it is the least. This is due to vacuum-based pressurewaves. Because the universe is finite,at the critical dimension points thewaves determine physical interactionsby sett ing the value of the gravitational,

the electromagnetic, and the strong andweak nuclear forces. By means ofresonance they amplify some vibrationsand repress others; they are thusresponsible for the distribution ofmatter throughout the cosmos.1

A field that transports light (that is,waves of photons) and density-pressurewaves, and replenishes the energy lostby atoms and solar systems, is not anabstract theoretical entity. No wonder

that more and more physicists speak ofthe quantum vacuum as a physicallyreal cosmicplenum.

1 And thus are Karmic Agents. The entire volumecan be examined as a study of Karma from the lastManvantara becoming the dowry of the presentasinherent and universal Law of Nature or, asLaszlo says of the quantum vacuum, it carrieslight, and all the universal forces of nature..

The quantum vacuum, it appears, transports light, energy, pressure, andsound. Could it have a further propertyby means of which correlates separateand possibly distant events? Could itcreate the correlations that make for theamazing coherence of the quantum, ofthe organism, of consciousness andof the whole universe? The vacuumcould indeed have such a property. Itcould be not just a superdense sea ofenergybut also a sea ofinformation.

But could any medium be trulyfrictionless? The answer is yes:supercooled helium is entirelyfrictionless, as the Dutch physicistKammerlingh Onnes discovered in1911. He took helium normally agas and cooled it degree by degree

until it approached the absolute zero oftemperature signified by zero on theKelvin scale. When the temperature ofthe helium reached 4.2 Kelvin, adramatic change occurred. Helium lostits gaseous properties: it became liquid. At the same time, under equal pressure,it became 800 times denser! WhenOnnes cooled this superdense liquidhelium still further, at 2.17 Kelvinanother major change occurred: theliquid helium became superfluid.

Supercooled helium, though it issuperdense, does not resist objectspassing through it. It flows frictionlessthrough cracks and apertures so tinythat nothing else, not even a muchthinner gas, can penetrate them atleast, not without notable friction.

Superfluid helium is a goodanalogy for the superdense and at thesame time frictionless cosmic vacuum.According to John Wheelers

calculations, the energy density of thevacuum is 1094erg per cubic centimeter a stupendous amount that is fargreater than the energy associated withall the matter particles throughout theuniverse. (Matter particles are particlesthat have mass and, as Einsteinsfamous equation tells us, massaccelerated to the square of the velocityof light is equivalent to energy.) The

fact is that the vacuum is bothsuperfluid and super dense 1muchlike helium near the absolute zero oftemperature. This is a mind-bogglingcombination, for how can something bedenser than anything else and at thesame time more fluid than anythingelse? The vacuum, just likesupercooled helium, may be a mind-boggling medium, but it is not asupernatural one

All things in the universe areimmersed in the superdense yetsuperfluid cosmic vacuum, and allthings produce waves that move thevacuum). These torsion wavespropagate in the vacuum and theyinterfere. The interference patternsthey create integrate the information

carried by the individual vortices. Asthe vortices of individual things merge, the information they carry is notoverwritten, for the waves superposeone on the other. And the superposedwaves are in a sense everywherethroughout the vacuum. This, too, is anatural phenomenon: it is familiar inthe form of holograms.

1 The Secret Doctrine makes some mysteriousstatements about Hydrogen: Now what is that

Spiritual Fire[mentioned in Tabula Smaragdina]?In alchemy it is HYDROGEN, in general; while inesoteric actuality it is the emanation or the Raywhich proceeds from its noumenon, the Dhyan ofthe first Element. Hydrogen is gas only on ourterrestrial plane. But even in chemistryhydrogenwould be the only existing form ofmatter, in our sense of the term,(see Genesis ofthe Elements,by Prof. W. Crookes, p. 21.) and isvery nearly allied to protyle, which is our layam. Itis the father and generator, so to say, or rather theUpadhi(basis), of both AIR and WATER,and is fire,

air and water, in fact: one under three aspects;hence the chemical and alchemical trinity. In theworld of manifestation or matter it is the objectivesymbol and the material emanation from the

subjective and purely spiritual entitative Being inthee region of noumena. Well might GodfreyHiggins have compared Hydrogen to, and evenidentified it with, the TO ON, the One of theGreeks. For as he remarks, Hydrogen is notWater, though it generates it; Hydrogen is not fire, though it manifests or creates it; nor is it Air,though air may be regarded as a product of theunion of Water and Firesince Hydrogen is foundin the aqueous element of the atmosphere.. It isthree in one. (SDII, 105-106)

In a holographic recording created by the interference pattern oftwo light beams there is no one-to-one correspondence between points onthe surface of the object that isrecorded and points in the recordingitself. Holograms carry information ina distributed form, so all theinformation that makes up a hologramis present in every part of it. Thepoints that make up the recording of theobjects surface are present throughoutthe interference patterns recorded onthe photographic plate: in a way, theimage of the object is enfoldedthroughout the plate. As a result, whenany small piece of the plate isilluminated, the full image of the objectappears, though it may be fuzzier thanthe the image resulting fromilluminating the entire plate.

Superposed vacuum-interferencepatterns are natures holograms; theycarry distributed information on all theparticles, and on all the ensembles ofparticles, throughout the reaches ofspace and time. The hypothesis we cannow advance may be daring, but it islogical. The quantum vacuumgenerates the holographic field that is

    the memory of the universe.

    NONLOCALITY: The EPR Experiment

The EPR experiment the first ofthe revolutionary experiments that provethe nonlocality of the microsphere ofphysical reality was put forward byAlbert Einstein with his colleagues BorisPodolski and Nathan Rosen in 1935. This

thought experiment (so called becauseat the time it could not be empirically.Tested requires that we take two particlesin a so-called singlet state where theirspins cancel out each other to yield a totalspin of zero. We then allow the particlesto separate and travel a finite distance. Ifwe could then measure the spin states ofboth particles, we would know both statesat the same time. Einstein believed that

The Aquarian Theosophist, Vol. VI, #8 June 17, 2006 Page 5

this would show that the strangelimitation specified in Heisenbergsprinciple of uncertainty is not a completedescription of physical reality.

When experimental apparatussophisticated enough to test this

possibility could be devised, it turned outthat this is not exactly what happens.Suppose that we measure the spin state ofone of the particlesparticle Aalongsome direction let us say the Z-axis (thepermissible spin states are up or downalong axes x, y, and z). Let us say wefind that this measurement shows the spinto be in the direction up. Because thespins of the particles have to cancel eachother, the spin of particle B must

definitely be down. But the particlesare removed from each other, thisrequirement should not hold, yet it does.Every measurement on one particle yieldsa complementary outcome in themeasurement on the other. It appears thatthe measurement of particle A has aninstantaneous effect on B, causing its spinwave function to collapse into thecomplementary state. The measurementon A does not merely reveal an already

established state of B: it actually producesthat state.

An instantaneous effect propagatesfrom A to B, conveying preciseinformation on what is being measured. Bknows when A is measured, for whatparameter, and with what result, for itassumes its own state accordingly. Anonlocal connection links a and b,

    notwithstanding the distance that

separates them. Emperical experimentsperformed in the 1980s byAlain Aspectand collaborators and and repeated byNicolas Gisin in 1997 show that the speedwith which the effect is transmitted ismind-boggling

In Aspects experiments, thecommunication between particles twelvemeters apart was estimated at less thanone billionth of a second, about twenty

times faster than the speed with whichlight travels in empty space, while inGisins experiment, particles tenkilometers apart appeared to be incommunication 20,000 times faster thanthe velocity of light, relativity theoryssupposedly unbreakable speed barrier.

The experiments also show that theconnection between the particles is nottransmitted by conventional meansthrough the measuring apparatus; it isintrinsic to the particles themselves. The particles are entangled; theircorrelation is not sensitive either todistance in space or to difference in time.

SUBSEQUENT EXPERIMENTS HAVEINVOLVED MORE PARTICLES OVER EVER-

LARGER DISTANCES AT THE TIME OFWRITING, UP TO FORTY-ONE KILOMETERS,WITHOUT MODIFYING THESE SURPRISING

RESULTS. IT APPEARS THAT SEPARATIONDOES NOT DIVIDE PARTICLES FROM EACH

OTHEROTHERWISE A MEASUREMENT ONONE WOULD NOT PRODUCE AN EFFECT ON

THE OTHER. IT IS NOT EVEN NECESSARYTHAT THE PARTICLES HAVE ORIGINATED IN

THE SAME QUANTUM STATE, SO THATTHEY ORIGINALLY FORMED ONE SYSTEM.

EXPERIMENTS SHOW THAT ANY TWOPARTICLES, BE THEY ELECTRONS,NEUTRONS , OR PHOTONS, CAN ORIGINATEAT DIFFERENT POINTS IN SPACE AND TIME;If they once come together within thesame system of coordinates, that isenough for them to continue to act as partof the same quantum system even whenthey are In the words of physicist NickHerbert, The essence of nonlocality isunmediated action at-a-distance. . . A

nonlocal interaction links up one locationwith another without crossing space, without decay, and without delay. This linking, according to the quantumtheoretician Henry Stapp, could be themost profound discovery in all ofscience.

The HPB Defense Fund is specifically dedicated tothe publication of an authentic Volume I ofMadame Blavatskys letters. The proposedvolume will have the fraudulent letters in thecurrent Adyar edition removed and also take noteof other authors who follow the practice of mixinglies side by side with truth as if they were equallyrelevant. It is our intent to equip the student andinquirer with eyes to discriminate the authenticfrom the fraudulent, the clean from the corrupt.A good companion volume for an unbiasedoverview of the life of Madame Blavatsky. Is

already in print: The Extraordinary Life andInfluence of Helena Blavatsky. (600+ pages). This volume is by far the most readable and best

    documented work available. ED.,A.T

decided to lay special stress on theUpanishads, and, after them, on the worksof Shankara Acharya and Buddha, whilegiving such space to other religions asmight be found advantageous.

    The reasons for putting the

Upanishads in the first place were thesetraces of the teachings which havebecome known to us as Theosophy, arefound in the records of all ancientreligions in both hemispheres, butnowhere are these teachings so fully, lucidly and profoundly recorded as in theoldest Upanishads and this is true not onlyof large generalizations, like the doctrinesof rebirth and liberation, but also of thosemore particular and recondite doctrines

which come gradually to the knowledgeof students who follow a special line ofstudy and work. So that, in theUpanishads, we have an invaluable proofof the antiquity and authenticity of bothgeneral and particular doctrines aguarantee at least three thousand yearsold, and, in all probability, very mucholder. And if the Upanishads lend thisinvaluable support to our modernteachings, it is, on the other hand, true,

that without these modern teachings, much that is most profound and ofgreatest value in the Upanishads is hardlyintelligible, so that one may read theordinary translations without gaining anyidea of the meaning, or even the presence,of those particular teachings which wehave spoken of. It was, therefore, necessary to read and translate, theUpanishads, in the light of Theosophy.

Following out this purpose, sevenout of the ten chief Upanishads havealready been translated, and very fullycommented on ; the eighth is in course oftranslation, and a considerable part of ithas already appeared in the OrientalDepartment. The greatest and mostprofound of Upanishads will be translatedin the future, and commented on in thelight of the Upanishads already translated.

Besides this, its most important part, the Oriental Department has containedportions of three of the Buddhist Suttasthree hitherto untranslated works ofShankara Acharya, and a fourth work, already somewhat loosely translated, butonly obtainable with great difficulty.

Other translations have been taken fromthe hymns of Rig Veda, Manus Code, theMahabharata, and the Puranas ; while theMohammedan religion has beenrepresented by a tract on the Sufi adeptsand their precepts, here for the first timetranslated into English, and the extremelyinteresting Mussulman traditions of Issaor Jesus, which show the son ofMariain as a master-magician andteacher of pure morality.

Various essays on Oriental subjectshave been added; amongst them shortaccounts of the scholars who brought thesacred books and ancient languages of theeast to the west, and this series willshortly be completed.
