Afterthe phenomenal success ofSPORNADO'08, which saw thefuture managers from two premierinstitutes–IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi, fighting it out for the priced glory, came the grandeur and more spiritedSPORNADO'09. It was acongregation of managementstudents from the IIT Delhi, IITKanpur, IIT Kharagpur and IITRoorkee, spanned over 4 days andfeatured 10 games like football, basketball, cricket, table tennis, badminton, lawn tennis, squash, chess, pool and snooker. This eventwitnessed more than 200 studentsf ight i t out for the covetedSPORNADO'09 trophy and had morethan 2000 footfall.

The Inaugural Ceremony on Jan. 15, 2009 wasgraced by the presence of the Chief Guest Prof. N. K.Goel, Dean of Students Welfare, IIT Roorkee. The ChiefGuest and the Head of Department, Department ofManagement Studies, Prof. V. K. Nangia, lit the lamp andinaugurated the event. The first game to kick off was thecricket match between IIT Roorkee and IIT Kanpur. Thematch saw a brilliant innings from IIT Roorkee batsmen to

propel their innings to a matchwinning score of 140 runs and theirindomitable bowlers paved the wayfor a handsome 65 run victory. Inanother sports event, IIT Delhienthralled the audiences with their3-0 clean sweep in the squashmatches against IIT Kharagpur.

With the overall championshipat stake, the event brought manyenrapturing moments andspellbound performances in theconcluding days. IIT Roorkee andIIT Delhi had head-on clashes in thefinal matches of 8 out of the 10sports events and IIT Roorkeeemerged as the overall Championsafter defeating IIT Delhi in 7 finalsand lifted the SPORNADO'09trophy.

The event marked an end onJan. 18, 2009 with a grand closingceremony. The Chief Guest on theoccasion Shri Pradeep Kumar,GM,

BSNL (Haridwar) and Prof. Harshavardhan Sinvhal,Dean of Alumni Affairs, IIT Roorkee, graced the occasionwith their presence and gave the trophies to the winners ofthe various sports events.

SPORNADO, in true sense, was the moment whenthe soul and the sporting spirit long suppressed, foundutterance.

The GNEC Construction Monitoring Group visited the site onJan. 17, 2009 for an 'On the spot evaluation of the progress'. TheGroupwasaccompanied by the Head (Infrastructure) of EILMr.S.N.Bhatnagar, his team mates and also the Project Manager andConstruction Manager of the Construction Contractor M/S SamiahInternational Builders Pvt. Ltd.(SIBPL). Following points were noted:

The GNEC land is a low lying area and was totally submerged inwater just before the construction started w.e.f. 19.09.2008. Asper plans, the entire area shall be graded up on an average ofaprox. 2 m so as to avoid future water logging. The bearing capacity of the soil in GNEC land is in the range ofapprox. 6 T/M and also the liquidity index is too high (cohesion-less soil). This has necessitated pile foundation for all thebuildings. In all 785 concrete piles each having depth 12-22meter are already driven in.

Construction activities for the services block, academic blockand field-hostel are on. As per schedule, the academic block isexpected to be fully functional for the academic activities in theacademic year 2010.

A one day orientation program on “Exotic radioactivity and the shellmodel” was held on Dec. 21, 2008, at the S. N. Bose Auditorium, BoseBlock, Physics Department, preceding the DAE symposium on NuclearPhysics. Over fifty participants comprising of mainly Ph.D. students andyoung researchers attended the course. The course was coordinated byProf. A.K. Jain and lectures were given by Prof. Enrico Maglione,Padova, Italy (Theoretical aspects of proton emission from proton richnuclei), Dr. Ajit K. Sinha, Director, UGC-DAE, CSR-Kolkata (ProtonRadioactivity – Experimental aspects), Dr. P.Arumugam, IITR (Meanfieldof triaxially deformed nuclei and application to proton radioactivity), Dr.Rajdeep Chatterjee, IITR (Direct and indirect approaches in nuclearastrophysics), and Dr. P.K. Rath, Lucknow Univ. (Double beta-decay andnuclear structure physics). The course concluded on a successful notepreparing the students for working in these advanced areas.
