Hello ALSI friends and guests.

The ALSI May meet-ing was fun and enjoya-ble. The solo accordion-ist all played beautiful-ly. The expression, use of fills, and blending of reed voices, dynamics, and digitally instrument sounds were suburb.

Our visiting accordi-onist Mr. Heniz Trilck added humor to his mu-sic selections and sound-ed very much like Pete "Barbutti and Corky Bennett in Las Vega. A fantastic afternoon was

what we all surely en-joyed.

HAPPINESS AT ALSI

Happiness at ALSIBy Marian Sowell

May 4, 2014 – Our group enjoyed a beautiful warm, sunny day on the patio for our break time. Gordon Kohlcontributed a delicious chocolate cake and Diane Polinski strolled with her accordion playing toe taping, lively mu-sic. Kari Andrews & Jane Fordserved the refreshments & worked in the kitchen. The players around the village were: Steve Halpern, in the cafeteria & Vicki Eriqat, at Brandel.

Ron Griffin was our mystery play-er with his Midi-Electronics. Ron played beautifully from memory and brings back memories. Ron is very tal-ented. Good job, Ron!! His songs were: Misty, Spanish Eyes, Amore, Sku-zami, Nideloin, La Paloma & Sabor a Mi.

Claudia Wrona from Highlands, played her accordion & accompa-nied her friend, Harold, singing with her. Their songs were Moulin Rouge, a Hungarian Czardus & Somewhere My Love. It is always good to see these two at ALSI.

Jerry Odling played Autumn Leaves followed by Moulin Rouge and a French tune, Au Bistrot Du Port, a beautiful waltz. Thank you, Jerry, for your lovely music.

A.L.S.I. is on the WEBat

Joe Colombo entertained us with Maria Elena, Spanish Eyes & Love Me With All Your Heart. Very nice, Joe!! Love to see you more often.

The ALSI Ensemble, directed by Vicki Eriqat, played several songs: Silk Umbrella, De Colores, Just Be-cause, King of the Road & Beer Bar-rel Polka. The players were: Jerry Odling, Steve Halpern, Ted Hill, Kari Andrews, Lois Lahoud, Kjell Holmes, Bob Page, Gordon Kohl, Ron Griffin, Jane Ford & Marian Sowell.

Special thanks to Marian Sowell for writing up Happiness this month. Jack & Sharon Marotte were on vacation. Good Job, Marian!!!

songs: ‘I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE, BABY”, “OVER THE WAVES”, “SWEET GEORGIA BROWN”, “HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN”, “DISCO TICO”, “TANGO BO-LERO”, “PENNSYLVANIA 6-500”, “SH-BOOM SH-BOOM”, “QUANDO”, “EL CUMBAN-CERO” and “GLORY”. All in all, he played 24 songs, almost non-stop and much to the delight of the audience. He has a comfortable command of his instrument and plays with an easy going energy. It was our pleasure to have him enter-tain us this afternoon. We hope he can find time in his busy schedule to play for us again.

After the afternoon break, Linda Hibbert took the stage with her Concerto digital elec-tronic accordion. This instrument combines a full

set of reeds with a digital synthesizer and con-trols that permits the player to layer in addition-al orchestral instrument sounds on either or both hands. In essence you have an acoustic ac-cordion playing with an ensemble of other in-struments. Linda programs her instrument well

SHOWCASE REVIEW by Bob Warner

HEINZ TRILCK and LINDA HIBBERT SHOWCASEMay 4, 2014

Occasionally we have two accordionists present programs for us on the same after-noon. In this case we had Heinz Trilck, a pro-fessional musician of long standing and our own Linda Hibbert, a truly fine accordionist who is a supporting member of the ALSI POLKA DOTS and the ALSI ACCORDION ENSEMBLE.

To say that Heinz’s repertoire is expansive may not be a strong enough term. He has a personable, stand up style of playing to the au-

dience while entertaining them with anecdotes about his musical career. It is fun time with Heinz when he is on the stage. Everyone is smiling during his presentation. He launches into his numbers with an easy, fluid technique while playing everything from memory and rarely looking at the keyboard. His playing is clean and expressive and well served by his non-amplified acoustic accordion. This was acoustic accordion at its best.

To give you some idea of the extent of his repertoire here is a partial list of some of his

SHOWCASE REVIEW— cont.

to provide a variety of acoustic and electronic instrument sounds. She began her program with “EL RELICARIO”, a majestic, paso doble of considerable technical difficulty. There was good balance between the acoustic side and orchestral background and a solid, rhythmic bass. Her “LINA MAZURKA” was replete with triplets and runs at a fast ¾ time pace. Piano was layered in with the reeds. Next, “RHYTHM OF THE RAIN”, played in a swing arrangement had a guitar soloing for an unusu-al effect, perhaps like falling rain drops. A Pa-risian waltz followed again with guitar very prominent on the left hand and supported by the acoustic sound. The beautiful song, “SPEAK SOFTLY, MY LOVE”, from the “GODFATHER” movie”, followed.

Linda carried on her fine program with “LA CUMPARSITA”, a classical “TURKISH RONDO” by Mozart, “DOMINO”, a French musette, and a special number called ‘SUKI YAKI”. Linda programmed in a xylophone ef-fect which helped enhance the oriental nature of this piece. Next came “FUNICULI, FUNIC-ULA” which had a very dramatic intro and great arrangement, “GLO WORM”, an old time novelty that sounded well with xylo-phone layered in, a beautiful “AUTUMN LEAVES” and to finish, “ACCORDION BOO-GIE”. Linda played a very exciting arrangement of this great accordion piece. Throughout all of this, Linda took full advantage of the pro-gramming features of her instrument to pro-duce various combinations of instruments which enhanced the nature of the type of piece being played. Her playing is crisp and clean and the arrangements used were chal-lenging throughout. She has command of her instrument. Linda has played for us before and we hope to hear her soon again. —

SILENT REED

Russell CampWe are sad to report the passing of ALSI

member, Russell Camp. He passed away on May 17th while waging a brave battle against cancer. He was survived by his wife Pat.

Russell was a resident of the Mt. Miguel Covenant Retirement Village and was the liai-son between ALSI and the Village for many years. This was a great help to the club and proved to be a great benefit to the residents of this retirement facility, one being the monthly concerts that were given by ALSI members in the Cafeteria, Brandell Hall, and

the Crider Halls.Russell spent many years in Christian minis-try with missions in Latin America, primarily in Ecua-dor for the Evan-gelical Covenant Church. During his retirement, he made yearly visits to Guate-

mala where he brought accordions to the young people in the villages. He gave them music lessons from their church song books. Members of ALSI donated accordions to Rus-sell and these efforts have been chronicled in earlier issues of this newsletter.

He loved to share his gospel songs in our ALSI meetings and he always played them with great feeling. He was a very good performer. His kindness and engaging smile will be re-membered by all and he will be greatly missed.

Our condolences and prayers go out to his wife Pat and family. He was a wonderful per-son to know and gave much of himself to help the ALSI club have a wonderful place to hold their meetings. —
