Waiariki Institute of Technology – Whare Takiura offers a distinctive suite of three postgraduate management qualifications: Master of Management (Level 9 of 180 credits); with embedded Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Level 8 of 120 credits); and Postgraduate Certificate in Management (Level 8 of 60 credits).

The suite of programmes is designed to allow students to progress through the postgraduate certificate into the postgraduate diploma and finally into the Master of Management, or to enrol directly at any level. Each qualification may be achieved with an endorsement in fields that Waiariki has a long history of recognised strengths in delivery and successful career outcomes for graduates: business, health, hospitality, and information technology.

As a graduate of these qualifications you will be a business innovator who will upskill and then support economic growth of the Central North Island and Aotearoa/New Zealand or in your country of origin.

Specifically, these qualifications are designed to produce graduates who will have developed highly specialised knowledge and sustainable management understandings and practices. Students will be introduced to bicultural practices through the learning and teaching process and commence developing and applying new skills and techniques to manage and instigate growth and change through the effective application of management theories.

The underpinning Kaitiakitanga Theoretical Model framework is an original integration and development of two well-known theoretical models: Biculturalism and the Quadruple Bottom Line (QBL) Sustainability. These are aimed at satisfying the cultural, social, environmental and economic aspirations of Māori and Pasifika, while being inclusive of international students, through Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Management is designed for domestic and international students seeking to broaden scholarly research and management capabilities. It will build on previous undergraduate degree, graduate studies and/or strengthen career aspirations within fields of management, business, health, hospitality, or information technology.

The standard at which the graduates will operate includes the ability to conceptualise and evaluate theory and practice within a management scope. Graduates will work toward independent study demonstrating an advanced level of knowledge and applying evidence and enquiry to a relevant management context.

ABOUT THE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN MANAGEMENT

eNtry criteria for tHe Postgraduate certificate iN MaNageMeNt Academic entry and admission requirements for this qualification are in accordance with Waiariki’s Academic Regulations and the following criteria:All applicants will be required to submit a 400-word statement about their professional goals and rationale for seeking entry into this programme. Applicants may be interviewed in person or via Skype to evaluate their suitability to enter the programme.All applicants must possess:

a graduate diploma at NZQA Level 7 or equivalent; or an undergraduate degree or equivalent; or a bachelor’s honours degree, or a postgraduate qualification.

Provisional entryApplicants who do not meet the standard entry above in a relevant field for the Postgraduate Certificate in Management, but present evidence of ability to succeed require a combination of academic and practical or professional experience:

a three-year post-secondary school diploma in a related discipline at NZQA Level 7 or equivalent from a recognised tertiary provider, and demonstration of at least three years’ equivalent practical or professional experience at a managerial level with at least two written references; or

coMM.8001 coMMuNicatioN for MaNagers Students will analyse their personal communication style and investigate congruence to effective management practices. Students will critically examine a range of professional communication practices required to address an array of management situations. Students will analyse and assimilate communication characteristics associated with the effective manager, and consider cultural competence and biculturalism as practice approaches in management.

coMP.8001 iMPact of iNforMatioN tecHNology iN orgaNisatioNs Students will critically analyse the role and applications of information technology in organisations, and evaluate planning, policies and procedures for managing the use of information technology within these contexts. Students will also examine and appraise the impact of recent advancements such as cloud computing, mobile devices and virtualisation, and review the management of information technology in a case study or real organisation and recommend future improvements.

coMP.8002 iNforMatioN tecHNology aNd BusiNess iNtelligeNce Students will explore the fundamentals of business intelligence techniques and provide understanding of major issues and applications in business intelligence (BI) and data mining (DM) for optimisation of business performance. Students will relate key issues, tasks and roles in an information technology (IT) environment to business outcomes. Using a problem-solving approach, students will identify the IT needs of a business and evaluate the role of cloud computing in business intelligence and data mining.

geNr.8001 WorK-iNtegrated ProJect 1Students will learn how to investigate a range of significant challenges in their chosen field, then research and develop a proposal to overcome one of those challenges. The proposal will then be presented to a professional group for feedback, evaluation and action.

geNr.8002 WorK-iNtegrated ProJect 2Students will critically examine the effectiveness of a plan that has been developed and implemented in response to a significant challenge in their chosen field. Students will develop capability in evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation process and achievement of outcomes in relation to a project plan. Their findings will be professionally documented and presented to a specified audience.

HltH.8001 leadersHiP iN HealtH care Students will investigate leadership in the health care sector from theoretical, historical and functional perspectives with a view to enhancing their understanding of the impact of leadership ability. Students will identify and synthesize personal leadership understandings and skills. The utility of research to support leadership in the health care sector is evaluated.

HltH.8002 goVerNaNce aNd MaNageMeNt iN HealtH care Students will investigate the concepts of governance and management alongside the impact these roles have on health care and health outcomes within the health care sector. Also investigated are Māori and Treaty of Waitangi perspectives and approaches to governance within the context of health. Students will focus on optimising the impact of the roles examined to improve health care outcomes.

HosP.8001 cultural iNtelligeNce iN tHe HosPitality iNdustryStudents will investigate the theory of cultural intelligence (CQ) and its application to hospitality organisations as a critical aspect of achieving business success in a global environment. Students will discuss the major elements of CQ and their implications, assess CQ practices and the influence of culture on consumer perceptions of service encounters. Students will reflect on demographic changes, examine existing models of CQ and facilitate a CQ learning plan.

HosP.8002 serVice sector MarKetiNgStudents will gain applied knowledge and skills in service sector marketing. Specifically, they will explore marketable values, target market characteristics and the value proposition, expanded marketing mix, and marketing communication strategy. Students will gain insight into current and innovative marketing practices and opportunities to develop professional marketing plans and budgets, pitching marketing proposals, and revising marketing plans to target market response trials.

MgMt.8001 MaNageMeNt Practice: critical aNalysis aNd reVieW Students will develop their ability to critically evaluate management theory and practice, including the capability to investigate and analyse information to further inform management practice.

MgMt.8002 Quality MaNageMeNt systeMs: Macro to MicroStudents will analyse in-depth governance structures and organisational quality management systems at both the macro and micro levels. A range of systems and approaches will be examined with a view to students being able to analyse, implement and improve such systems in organisations.

MgMt.8003 HuMaN aNd resource MaNageMeNtStudents will analyse human and resource management theories, models and systems. Students will analyse and discuss employer-related legislation and the use of human and resource optimisation plans. Employee management skills will be analysed using real-life case study examples.

MgMt.8004 fiNaNce for MaNagersStudents will evaluate a range of financial methods and approaches to utilising financial assets, reflecting on their significance in management roles. Financial asset value determination and utility, capital structures, and the role of cash flow and leverage in business will also be analysed.

MgMt.8005 cHaNge MaNageMeNtStudents will learn how to investigate, evaluate and apply change management theories that aid in making the employee and organisation ready for immediate or continuous change.

MgMt.9001 adVaNced aPPlied researcH ProPosalStudents will identify an area to research, formulate research questions and hypotheses, conduct a literature review, select a methodological approach and create both research approval and ethics approval application documents for an extended field, dissertation or thesis project. The proposal will be both documented and formally defended.

MgMt.9002 adVaNced aPPlied researcH ProJectStudents will independently undertake an original research project or creative scholarly work specific to their chosen field under supervision. They will plan and negotiate, taking into consideration biculturalism and quadruple bottom line theory. The student will formally present their research findings.
