Kettering Medical Center will

install new signs both inside

and outside by the end of the

year. This new wayfinding

system will make it easier

for our visitors to get where

they need to go at Kettering.

Why did we do this? Currently, visitorsaregreeted

bymanysigns,withseveral

messages,inmanydifferent

styles.Thenewsignswillreduce

thevisualnoiseandhelpvisitors

quicklyandeasilydetermineif

theyareheadingthecorrect

direction.

What did we do? Ateamrepresentingallkey

areasofthehospitalguided

theprocess.Theentirehospital

staffwasinvitedtoparticipate

insurveys.Thisteam,alongwith

Swath,aleadingenvironmental

graphicsdesignfirm,audited

allexistingsigns,entrances,

andtrafficinsideandoutside

thehospital.Theresultofwas

anewsimplifiedwayfinding

systembasedonprovenscientific

methods.Otherhospitalshave

hadsuccesswithcolor-coded

districtwayfindingsystems,

includingCincinnatiChildrens

HospitalMedicalCenter.

Principles of new system DistrictsThecampuswillbe

dividedintodistrictsbased

onparking,entrancesand

departmentlocations.Each

districthasadistinctcolor,icon,

andnamereinforcedthrough

signageandtheelevators.The

goalofthesystemistohave

visitorsparkandentercloseto

theirdestination,whilestaying

inthesamedistrict.Ifvisitors

needtogotoadifferentlevelof

thehospital,theywillfirstfind

thecorrectdistrictonthefirst

level,taketheelevator,andthen

followmoredetailedsignsto

theirdestination.Inmostcases

patientswillbeabletogetto

theirdestinationinlessthan

threesteps.Ifavisitorgetslost

theywillbedirectedbacktothe

firstlevel.

Destinations Simplified

Effectivesignageshouldnot

listeverypossiblelocationand

destination,butratherlists

higherleveldestination.Areas

thathaveseveraldepartments

withinoneareawillhaveone

nameforthatdestination.In

everycase,directionsstartwith

thedistrictasthebroadest

referencepoint.Theywillpark

inaspecificareadesignated

byadistrict.Fromtherethey

willenterthebuilding,then

navigatetoanelevatorortheir

destination.Astheygetcloserto

theirdestination,thewayfinding

getsmorespecific.
