Many of those sitting around you were in your position once. They walked through the doors of the church and didn’t know anyone. They felt a little awkward to be in a new place. Yet, they found a home here and we hope that you will too. If you would like information on how to become a member, if you have questions about worship, or if you are just curious, make sure to speak with Pastor Buch as you leave. If you have any questions please ask one of the ushers that handed you your worship folder. God’s blessings on your week and we hope to see you again soon!! Little children are welcome in worship. Children are future pastors, teachers and members of God’s church. They need to meet Jesus and hear his Word too. We have reserved the back row of chairs on the organ side of the church for families with small children. We have a quiet room, located off the narthex, for infants, toddlers and their parents if the children get too active during worship. We have the opportunity to commune with our God through our Savior’s body and blood. Holy Communion is not just between us and God, it is also a statement and confession of faith. As we come forward to commune we are stating that we believe and confess the same faith as the other members of our congregation. What a blessing this is, that we can join together in Christ’s holy supper as a congregation united in faith. As we prepare to receive this sacrament it is always good to take a moment of personal preparation and prayer. PASTOR’S WELCOME AND PRAYER

OPENING HYMN: 221 BLESSED JESUS AT YOUR WORD

Please stand

P: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

P: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C:  Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God our heavenly Father has been merciful to us and has given us his only son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

LORD, HAVE MERCYP: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and

joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

THE WORDFIRST LESSON: AMOS 7:10-15Even when false prophets and unfaithful kings stood against God’s word, God continues to send faithful prophets like Amos to call the people to repentance. Amos realizes that although other people stand against him, his strength and purpose come from the Lord.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying: “ ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’ ”

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”

14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor a prophet’s son, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

SONGS AND PRAYERS FOR CHILDRENThese songs and prayers are ones that, for many years, parents and grandparents have taught to their children. We take the time to remember the simple truths that are in these songs that we now teach our children. Please help your children to follow along as we sing these songs that provide the Gospel in a simple way.

Let Me Learn of Jesus1. Let me learn of Jesus; 2. When I go to Jesus;

He is kind to me. He will hear me prayOnce he died to save me, Make me pure and holyNailed upon the tree. Take my sins away

P: Let us fold our hands, bow our heads and ask Jesus our loving Savior to hear us as we pray together:

Lord teach a little child to prayAnd, Oh, accept my prayerThou nearest all the words I say Teach me to do whate’er is rightThou art everywhere. And when I sin, forgive;

And make it still my chief delightTo love Thee while I live. Amen

1. I am trusting you, Lord JesusTrusting only you,Trusting you for full salvation 2. I am trusting you to guide me; Free and true. You alone shall lead,

Ev’ry day and hour supplyingAll my need.

SECOND LESSON – 1 TIMOTHY 3:1-7 God gives specific directions for those who are leaders in his church. God wants his leaders and his people to not be distracted from the importance of his Word. He wants his leaders to not fall into a job mentality and he does not want his people to focus on a glaring weakness in a leader. He wants his leaders to strive to keep the importance of the Gospel in their life, to live that Gospel, to model that Gospel to those they lead. He wants his people to strive to hear the Word through their leaders and to follow that model. Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

HYMN OF THE DAY: 324 ALMIGHTY GOD, YOUR WORD IS CAST

SERMON TEXT: Matthew 13:1-9; 18-23SERMON THEME: Listen to the Word

1. To Grow up in the Word2. To Bear a Crop

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still

Page 4: Web viewOpening hymn: 221 BLESSED JESUS AT YOUR WORD. ... received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it

other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 He who has ears, let him hear.” 18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Nicene CreedWe believe in one God, the Father the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not

made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

 He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated

THANKING GOD WITH OUR OFFERINGSWhile the ushers come forward to collect the thank offerings please take a moment to fill in the friendship register which is at the end of the row. If you notice someone has not had a chance to sign, please hand it to them.

 PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive thosewho trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENTAt Summerlin Lutheran Church we take seriously what God's Word says about Jesus' body and blood in this Sacrament.  We also believe that by participating in the Lord's Supper our members are confessing their common faith and are (also) expressing their unity of faith in all of God's truths (1 Cor 10).  As a result, Summerlin Lutheran has always practiced what might be called "member communion."    If you are not a member of Summerlin Lutheran or the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) and would like to receive Holy

Communion, it would be our joy to have the opportunity to share with you our faith and beliefs in an information class.  This is how all of our members came to share the same faith which they are confessing to each other (and to the world) as they take Holy Communion.

P: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.C: We lift them up to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

P: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He made his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory forever and ever.

WORDS OF INSTITUTIONP: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given

thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.C: Amen.
