Ilha de Paquet
This car-free island ( ferry 0800-721-1012;
www.grupoccr.com.br/barcas) provides a pleasant escape from the
citys bustle. Transport is by foot, bicycle (with hundreds for
rent) or horse-drawn carts. Theres a certain decadent charm to the
colonial buildings, unassuming beach and businesses catering to
local tourism. The place gets crowded on weekends. Boats leave from
near the Praa XV (Quinze) de Novembro in Centro. The ferry takes 70
minutes and will cost you R$9 for a return trip. There are nine
departures daily, the most useful being 7:10 am, 10:30 am and 1:30
pm.

EXPLORING THE BAY
To the east of Centro lies Rios scenic bay. Unfortunately, its
too polluted for swimming, but it makes a fine backdrop for the
boat ride to Niteri or Ilha de Paquet.
Niteri
East of Rio, the city of Niteris principal attraction is the
photogenic Museu de Arte Contempornea (MAC; 2620-2400;

R$6; 10 am6 pm TueSun). The cruise across the bay, however, is
perhaps just as valid a reason for leaving Rio. The ferry costs
about R$9 return and leaves near Praa XV (Quinze) de Novembro in
Centro; its usually full of commuters. Once you reach the dock, the
immediate area is a busy commercial district, full of pedestrians
and crisscrossing intersections. From here catch bus 47B 2.1km
south to the MAC or get back on the ferry and head back.
