Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
There are some solemnities that are
easy to explain; likewise, there are
some that miss the mark because
they come from an ancient culture
that is filled with acts and beliefs that
have long gone by the wayside.
Pentecost is such a feast. To
understand the modern solemnity of
Pentecost, the history and culture of
Judaism needs to be explained.
Currently, the modern abbreviated definition is that
Pentecost is the” birthday” of the Church. While this is true,
there is much more to this celebration and the additional
aspects of it create a feast that surpasses many others
because it establishes a clear and moving relationship
between man and God.
Our ancient Hebrew ancestors had an intense and
overwhelming belief that their God was the origin of
everything. This God wanted the Hebrews to be His people.
He would bless and guide them making them His favorite
nation. Since the origin of all and the continued existence of
all relied on His beneficence, they owed Him the best part of
everything they had. Even though Pentecost is found in their
law, it was not something He demanded under duress; rather
it came freely from the heart of His people. As long as the
Hebrews continued to follow His precepts, they were His
people – special and blessed. To celebrate their
interdependence, special feast days were established. One
such celebration was called Pentecost. On this feast day, the
people would offer the best portion of their crop to their God.
This offering acknowledged God as their source of life.
Pentecost, for the Jews of Christ’s time, was the time when
people would give thanks and dedicate the first fruits of grain
to God as a tithing. It was the time when they remembered
God’s Covenant with them. It was during this feast that they
remembered the Torah and the Temple where God
interacted with man. At the Temple, God would reside and be
present so that Heaven and Earth would meet. This was the
place for worship and forgiveness so that mercy could be
dispensed as God cared for His people. All Jews would make a
pilgrimage to the Temple to give thanks to God for the
blessings He bestowed upon them. This form of tithing was
done, no matter how small, so that praise and honor could be
given to their God who had made them His own.
Before Christ ascended, he instructed
the apostles to return to Jerusalem
and wait for the Power of God, the
Holy Spirit, to come. This was true
power that the apostles would
receive. This power was the gift of
the Holy Spirit which enabled them
to preach the Gospel despite
persecution and other obstacles. The
transformation that occurred to
these chosen ones, starting in Jerusalem, would rock the
known world. These apostles would be “the first fruits” of
Jesus. As followers of Christ, they would be changed from
ordinary men into dedicated, brave and bold advocates of the
Divine Message. Once frightened men, now, spoke publicly
and unashamed the Gospel of the Lord. In addition, it was not
until they received the Holy Spirit that they would
comprehend their mission from Christ in all of its complexity.
Once they dedicated themselves to the Divine Mission, the
Holy Spirit transformed their simple gift of self into a world-
changing power.
It was very appropriate that God sent the Spirit during this
season of thankfulness and prosperity. It was during this time
that the “first fruits” of Christ’s Church, the apostles, began
their transformation of the Roman Empire. It was this
transformation that revealed the true power and mercy of
God. Thus, the early Church kept this Jewish feast as it marks
the beginning when God, as the Holy Spirit, came to dwell
with them, permanently. Through their sufferings and as first
fruits, they gave back and dedicated their lives to God as they
awaited the return of the Word and the day of Justice.
Pentecost, for them, was the day of empowerment!
With this in mind, we celebrate this solemnity by dedicating
our lives to the Creator. This is the time that we Christians
offer our gifts and talents to God and to the world. By
recognizing the role that God plays in our existence, we join
our ancient brothers and sisters in dedicating our “first fruits”
to the Creator of all. Now, it is our turn to give thanks and
proclaim the “Good News” to the people of our time as we
await the coming of Christ as King and Judge. So, while we
still think of this day as the “Birthday” of the Church, it is a
day of empowerment and dedication when we offer the best
we have to the service of God and our fellow man.

SAINTS OF THE MONTH:
St. BARNABAS JUNE 11
St. Barnabas, a Jew from Cyprus, comes as
close as anyone outside of the Twelve to being
a full-fledged apostle. He was with Paul,
introducing him to the apostles, assuring them
they could trust this man who use to persecute
Christians. Barnabas was sent by the apostles to
Antioch to instruct and incorporate the
Christian community there. He accompanied St.
Paul on the first missionary journey into pre-
sent day Turkey. The people there first thought
that Barnabas and Paul were the gods Zeus and
Hermes, which was quickly clarified. The people were told to worship only the
true living God.
St Paul and St Barnabas were beaten and stoned in some places. Despite these
hardships, they remained true to preaching the Word and were filled with the
joy of the Holy Spirit. St Barnabas is spoken of simply as one who dedicated his
life to the Lord and His will, a path for all to follow.
