WELCOME TO APOSTOLIC PRAISE 101 DRUMS!
APOSTOLIC PRAISE 101 is designed as a crash course in drums with an emphasis on learning to play in church.
It is very handson; in fact, you will be playing songs almost immediately. This course teaches how to play both
slow and fast songs. It also teaches many example songs along the way to show each concept in action. Playing
the drums should not have to involve years of lessons. You can learn to play and be capable of playing in church
in a couple of months or less. Practice, dedication, commitment, and APOSTOLIC PRAISE© are the keys. This
book should be used together with the APOSTOLIC PRAISE 101 Drums Practice CD or MP3 audio tracks. These
give you the “feel” of playing with a real band that contains all other instruments besides yourself.

APOSTOLIC PRAISE 101 DRUMS LESSON 1
The drum kit may be loosely divided into four parts:
Breakables: Sticks, various cymbals, snare drum, throne (stool) and sometimes the bass drum pedal.
Shells: Bass drum and toms. Extensions: Cowbell, tambourine, chimes, any other instrument not part of the standard kit. Hardware: Cymbal stands, drum stands, pedals.

APOSTOLIC PRAISE 101 DRUMS LESSON 1
Let’s explore the main parts that we use for playing the actual beat or rhythm when we play the drums: the BASS DRUM, the SNARE, and the HIHAT. The BASS DRUM is the part that we play with our right foot.
The SNARE or SNARE DRUM is the part that we typically play with a drumstick in our left hand.

The HiHat (as it is normally called) or HiHat Cymbals is the part that we typically play with a drumstick in our right hand.
The remaining parts of the drum set (TOMS and CYMBALS) are typically used for FILLS. We’ll explain more about what fills are in future lessons. We use the DRUM KEY to tune the TOMS and adjust parts of the drumset. This is a more advanced concept that you should not really worry too much about right now.
