What’s New in FieldView 15 FieldView 15 is the first in a new generation of FieldView releases, which are now being developed in close collaboration with FieldView users around the world.

50 different colormaps now directly accessible from the interface Using the right colormap can be critical to understanding and communicating what’s happening in your simulation results.

Four new colormaps have been added: “Achromatic Vision 1 & 2”, “Hot” and “Cold. Their linearly varying luminance provides better insight, prints well even in black & white, and remains clear even for those having troubles seeing colors.

38 colormaps, previously stored in FieldView’s installation directory, are now accessible from the drop down list.

An icon provides a glimpse to each colormap. All colormaps are supported in FVX and python.

Customize the FieldView interface with your own User Defined Colormaps The FieldView interface can now be customized with User Defined Colormaps. For better control at both user and IT level, FieldView will scan for two directories. Any valid colormap file placed there will be added to the list:

In the installation directory: $FV_HOME/data/colormaps

In the user’s home directory: /FieldView/colormaps

Template Layouts now provided with FieldView Commonly used Layouts can now be retrieved easily, from a directory in the FieldView installation.

$FV_HOME/fvx_and_restart

They are provided in the form of Restart files, that can be applied to a session through the Open Restart menu:

File > Open Restart > Multi-Window Layout Restart…

We provide layouts for 1 + 2 horizontal (shown) with several variations as well as layouts that are more difficult to make interactively such as 3 vertical and horizontal panes. These can be applied before or after data is read.

Reduced memory usage for rendering

FieldView 15 introduces the use of a more modern OpenGL mode (VBO) for rendering. Leads to a reduced memory usage on modern graphic cards, while maintaining or improving performance.

Users with older graphic cards or drivers can revert back to previous OpenGL mode by setting a new environment variable.

Multi-Window Improvements A number of problems have been resolved, related to the use of Legends and Annotations in Multi-Window FieldView sessions, both for interactive and batch. These improvements bring FieldView’s Multi-Window capability to Intelligent Light’s high quality standards.

Further reduce the size of your XDB extracts by maintaining surface thresholds You can now maintain the threshold applied to your surfaces as you export them to XDB (FieldView’s Extract Database) files, thus further reducing the size of your data.

Applies to the current threshold imposed on each surface.

For Coordinate Surfaces, X/Y/Z clipping is also maintained.

Threshold will be applied to all surfaces at once in a “sweep” XDB export.

Extended support for licensing on virtual systems Intelligent Light released a new version of its licensing daemon for virtual systems. Microsoft Hyper-V is now supported.

The new daemon provides an alternate solution for virtual hypervisors other than VMware and Hyper-V.

A new license agreement covering these technologies is required before you can use them.

OpenFOAM Direct Reader improvements

FieldView’s direct OpenFOAM reader has been improved to allow a more accurate representation of results, while improving performance and reducing memory usage.

Solution values at processor boundaries are now averaged with neighboring processors, which improves continuity through partitions. When interpolating results for plotting variables on surfaces, boundaries are now processed in priority order. A new environment variable forces the reader to ignore processor boundaries, when set to any value: FV_OPENFOAM_NO_PROC_BND

We recommend this variable to always be used, since it greatly reduces read time and memory usage.

XDBVIEWTM: a free, sharable viewer for XDB extracts

Shortly after the FieldView 15 release, a new free XDB viewer will be introduced.

XDBVIEWTM

requires no password.

can be transferred to another user with no license agreement.

can be used to visualize, review and share CFD results.

is the most advanced CFD viewer available, with high-

performance FieldView technology “under the hood”.
