AviationandconsequentlytheairportbusinesscontinuetogrowatagloballevelHowever this growth is very unevenly distributed among the different parts oftheworld It is true thatwith theexceptionof themarkets in theldquonewworldrdquocomprisingtheBRICstatestheGulfandcertainotherpartsofAsiaLatinAmericaand Eastern Europe airports inmany parts of theldquooldworldrdquo (mainlyWesternEuropeandtheUS)operateinanextremelychallengingenvironmentunderfiercecompetition andever increasing regulations for safety security economics andtheenvironmentFurthermore theprevailingdifficulteconomicconditionsaffectbothconsumersrsquopropensitytotravelaswellastheirspendinglevelsattheairportwhentheydo

FinancialcrisestherecentsovereigndebtcrisesandthethreatofanevendeeperrecessionhavecreatedahighlyvolatileenvironmentAirlinenetworkuncertaintyexacerbatedbythehighfuelcostsandtheconsequentloweringofyieldsaddtothisvolatilitywithairlines increasinglyputtingpressureson theairportsand theregulatorsregardingtheairportchargesrsquolevelsandairportpricingstructures

Amidstthesecriticalconditionsairportsarealsofacingtheneedtosuccessfullyreacttoanumberofchallengesthatarealreadypresentintheaviationindustryand

areexpectedtointensifyintheshortandmediumtermiethelow-costmodelincludingitsexpansionintolong-rangeintercontinentaloperationsandcodesharecooperationwithlegacycarriersgame-changingaircraftthatareexpectedtohaveanimpactontheairlinesrsquonetworksworldwidechangingdigitalandmobiletechnologyintegratedairtrafficcontrolsystems there-inventionandre-introductionof thecustomerexperienceaswellasenhancementof thecustomerengagementand newenvironmentalchallengesaffectingseveralaspectsofairportoperationsandeconomicsandforemostthesocialandpoliticallicenseofairportstogrow

In addition during the last decades airports are increasingly considerednot justmere infrastructure providers butareexpectedtoactasbusinessesintheirownrightminimizingburdentothetaxpayerHowevercontrarytoordinarybusinesscasesfocusingprimarilyonyieldandvaluetotheshareholdersairportsareexpectedtohaveahighdegreeofinputintothedevelopmentoftheairlinesrsquoroutenetworkscontributesignificantamountstogovernmentsintheformofconcessionfeesandtaxessupportandcontinuouslyenhancetheirvitalroletothelocalregionalandnationalsocialandeconomicdevelopmentandcontributetothemediumandlong-termsustainabilityofanumberofkeyplayersatthevaluechainofthetravelindustry

Worseningornegativeoutlooksareacommontheme in IATArsquospublicstatementsregardingtheperformanceor theworldrsquosairlinesAtthesametimethebiggestnumberorairportsareunabletorecovertheir fullcost includingtheirinvestmentsininfrastructureFundingofairlineequipmentorairportfacilitiesisnotgoingtogetanyeasierorcheaperinthenearfutureThechallengesaremanyandhighlydemandinginordertoensuresustainabilityandgrowthnotattheexpenseofoneanotherbuttothebenefitofeachotheritseemsthatthedevelopmentofacommonunderstandingandteamworkbetweenallintegralpartsoftheaviationandtravelvaluechainieairlinesairportsairnavigationserviceprovidersregulatorybodiesaswellastravelandtourismorganizationsandinstitutionsisfundamentalandhastobethenameofthegamefortheyearstocome
