Già più di mille anni fa le creazioni degli artigiani veneziani eranoammirate in tutto il mondo allora conosciuto

La realizzazione di raffinati oggetti in vetro ha sempre accompagnato lastoria millenaria di Venezia. Il più antico documento oggi esiste relativoall’arte del vetro risale al 982 e già in quel tempo le creazioni degliartigiani veneziani erano ammirate e ricercate in tutto il mondo alloraconosciuto. La presenza delle fornaci nelle vetrerie del centro della Città costituivaperò un grave pericolo, perché all’epoca la maggior parte delle caseveneziane era in legno: le conseguenze di un incendio sarebbero statedisastrose. Per questo motivo nel 1295 un decreto della SerenissimaRepubblica di Venezia stabilì il trasferimento dei laboratori artigiani perla lavorazione del vetro in un’isola della laguna limitrofa. Iniziò così lagrande tradizione del vetro di Murano.

The creation of refined glass objects has always accompanied the millennial history ofVenice. The oldest existing document, which refers to the art of glass, goes back to 982.And in those days, the works of Venetian craftsmen were already admired all over theworld (as it was conceived at the time). However, the furnaces of glassworks in the city centre posed a serious danger as most ofthe houses in Venice were made of wood: the consequences of a fire would have beendisastrous. For this reason, in 1295, the Serenissima Republic of Venice resolved totransfer the glass craftsmen laboratories to an island in the nearby lagoon. Murano's greatglass making tradition started from here.

Protetti dalla Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia e circondati da un’aura di mistero e bellezza,gli artigiani artisti di Murano realizzarono oggetti sempre più raffinanti e incantevoli,perfezionando costantemente le proprie tecniche, di cui custodivano gelosamente i segreti,tramandati di padre in figlio.Ma in una piccola isola è difficile nascondere un segreto ed erano all’ordine del giorno itentativi di carpire le tecniche dei migliori vetrai: la storia di questi oggetti di sofisticatabellezza è anche una storia di misteri, intrighi e spionaggio. Protected by the Serenissima Republic of Venice and surrounded by an aura ofmystery and beauty, the art craftsmen of Murano produced objects of increasedrefinement and charm. Constantly improving their techniques, they guarded theirsecrets with jealousy as they were handed down from generation to generation.But it is difficult to hide a secret on a small island and attempts to grasp thetechnique of the best glassmakers were not unusual: the history of thesesophisticated beautiful objects is also a history of mystery, intrigue and espionage.For this reason, the inhabitants of Murano were the only people who had the rightto go around armed; they were forced to live on the island and could not leaveVenice without special authorization: they were the only ones responsible forsafeguarding the precious secrets of glass making.

Per stimolare la realizzazione di oggetti sempre più belli e premiare i vetraipiù abili, ben presto la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia istituì deiriconoscimenti artistici per i maestri che introducevano novità nellalavorazione del vetro e si impegnò a tutelare ogni nuova scoperta. Inquesto modo l’arte della lavorazione del vetro a Murano si perfezionòcostantemente, soprattutto a partire dal XIV secolo, quando furonoaffinate nuove tecniche. Nel XVI secolo il vetro di Murano vide il suo piùalto splendore: i soffiati divennero sottili e purissimi, le fogge sempre piùessenziali e leggere, adatte a impreziosire le tavole dei ricchi nobilieuropei.Questa tradizione continua ancora oggi, in armonia con l’evoluzionedell’arte e dello stile contemporanei, grazie all’inesauribile creatività deimaestri veneziani che li porta a realizzare oggetti sempre diversi e unici.

In order to encourage the creation of increasingly beautiful objects and to reward the mosttalented glassmakers, the Serenissima Republic of Venice soon introduced artistic awards forcraftsmen who presented new ideas in glass making, taking it upon itself to protect every newdiscovery. In this way, Murano's glassmaking art improved steadily, especially from the XIVcentury when the new techniques were refined. In the XVI century, Murano's glass was at theheight of its splendour: hand blown glass became extremely thin and pure, its form more andmore essential and light, suitable for adorning the tables of rich European nobles.This tradition still continues today in harmony with the evolution of contemporary art and style,thanks to the relentless creativity of Venetian masters that induces them to create objects thatare always different and unique.

This happens every night in Murano from over one thousand years: the next morning theyfind that the glass has melted and is ready to be shaped and decorated using techniquesrefined over the centuries.
