Session 3 – How do we get the energy we need?
Objective: Explain how to get the correct energy to enhance wellbeing
You are a busy person. You are an adolescent and your body is growing and changing all the time. You will soon be studying for important qualifications and you will need lots of brainpower to do this. You are part of a large community and face social challenges regularly. You might play sport or learn musical instruments; you might act, dance or do other extra-curricular activities. You ask a lot of your body throughout the day and you need to fuel yourself correctly.
Study the different ‘Top Tips’ below and decide which ones are easy or difficult to achieve. Explain why you think this. The first one has been done as an example.
Top Tip Easy/Difficult? Explain why Exercise regularly: minimum 35 minutes 5 times a week.
Difficult
I have lots of homework to do during the week so I don’t have the time sometimes to do this.
Eat good carbs: especially wholegrains (e.g. brown rice, oats).
Page | 8 Wellbeing Study Booklet: Toxic and Flourishing
Eat protein, especially around breakfast and lunch.
Eat good fats, especially plant oils (e.g. olive oil), nuts and fish.

Session 4 – Why is sleep important?
Objective: Explain why sleep is important for wellbeing and learning
Decide whether the statements below are true or false:
Statement True False 12-13 year olds need 8.5 to 9 hours of sleep every night
Humans sleep in 4 stages
A complete cycle of sleep takes about 90 minutes
No-one knows exactly why we need sleep
If you don’t sleep, you’ll be fine the following day
Sleep only affects our reactions (we are slower)
Exercising helps us to sleep
Caffeine (found in coffee and coke) sends us to sleep
Big meals send us to sleep
Review R A G Outline how much sleep you need Explain why sleep is important Describe what can help or hinder you sleeping

Session 5 – Why do people smoke?
Objective: Explain why some people choose to start smoking
Examine the different case studies below and highlight reasons why you think each person started to smoke.
Case study Reason I started smoking when I was 13 years old because I wanted to be “cool”. There was a lot of peer pressure on me to smoke. I became seriously addicted to smoking at 18 and smoked 20 cigarettes a day.
I started smoking at the age of 13 and was soon smoking 2 packs of 20 cigarettes a day. My Mum was a smoker.
I am 12. I tried smoking for the first time last week and it tasted absolutely horrible. I coughed and choked in front of my mates and they laughed at me.
I started smoking quite late really, when I was 21. A few mates did it and when we were drinking in the pub I felt left out when they all went outside to smoke.

Session 6 – Why do people quit?
Objective: Explain why some smokers choose to quit smoking
Examine the different case studies below and highlight reasons why you think each smoker has quit.
Case study Reason When I became pregnant everything changed. Once I found out all of the dangers to my child while pregnant I knew I had to quit. I have been smoke free for 60 days and will NOT start back even after I have the baby.
I’m in my 40’s now, with two kids. They hated my smoking and when those adverts come on the TV about quitting they ask me to do it. My daughter even got me a quit smoking kit to help. It has worked!
When I settled down with my boyfriend, we wanted to buy a house. I was spending nearly £8 a day on cigarettes so it was an obvious place to cut back. After a year of saving, we can finally buy a house together.
My girlfriend hates my smoking, and it’s very difficult to go out with my friends and smoke as you have to go outside and you miss out on conversations and having a laugh. I’ll quit though, maybe before I’m 35.
