Zenon & Zenans
Cultured and hard-working typefaces for successful branding and publishing
Latin, Bengali, Greek and CyrillicDesigned by Riccardo Olocco

z Cultured and hard-working typefaces for successful branding and publishing Zenon is a text font in four weights: regular, medium, bold and black. Zenon has italics, small caps and various sets of figures (lining, non-lining, and small cap-height figures), fractions, superiors and inferiors. Zenon covers all the European languages that use Latin script and supports Greek, Cyrillic and Bengali scripts. The robust letters are designed to stand up to the worst conditions, the wide x-height secures legibility evident even at 8 points, the short ascenders and descenders allow compact setting and the com-pressed form allows space-saving on the page. Zenon is an apparently Renaissance revival with modernish proportions. A closer look reveals that it is a typographic potpourri.Zenans is the sans partner of Zenon and it was designed to widen the usability of the family. But it does not follow the same proportions as those sans that accompany seriffed typefaces usually do: the letters are wider and the x-height even bigger and the colour on the page is quite different.Zenon & Zenans were conceived to satisfy two differ-ent requirements: editorial and branding typography.
Zenon & Zenans
Since Cacio & Pepe has only three ingredients Pecorino Romano cheese, black pepper
and pasta it might seem an easy recipe to make but it isnt.
Just off the Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice in the heart of Testaccio, Zenone serves
the best Cacio & Pepe in the whole world.

The Architecture of Theories
Charles Sanders Peirce
Never published in The Monist n.2, January 1891
three questions, at least, i think it must be admitted, ought to form the subject of studies preliminary to the formation of any philosophi-cal theory; namely, 1st, the purpose of the theory, 2nd, the proper method of discovering it, 3rd the method of proving it to be true. I think, too, it can hardly be denied that it will be safer to consider these questions concerning the particular theory which is to be sought, in the light of whatever we
can ascertain regarding the functions, the discovery, and the establishment of sound theories in general. But these are questions of logic; and thus, no matter whether we ultimately decide to rest our philosophy upon logical principles as data, or upon psychological laws, or upon physical observations or upon mystical experiences, or upon intuitions of first principles, or testi-mony, in any event these logical questions have to be considered first.but if logic is thus to precede philosophy, will it not be unphilosoph-
ical logic? Perhaps logic is not in much need of philosophy. Mathematics, which is a species of logic, has never had the least need of philosophy in doing its work. Besides, even if logic should require subsequent remodelling in the light of philosophy, yet the unphilosophical logic with which we are obliged to set out will surely be better than no logic at all.the object of a theory is to render something intelligible. The object of
philosophy is to render everything intelligible. Philosophy thus postulates

Many alternativesAn ampersand is a sign that derived from the ligature of ET or et, which is the Latin word for and. Its an ancient sign, one of the first examples appears on a piece of Roman papyrus.
There are many interesting variations of the ampersand, such as those created by the Renaissance writing masters and by the French punch cutter Robert Granjon. Giovanni Battista Palatino shows more than twenty different shapes in his Compendio del gran volume (1571).

that the processes of nature are intelligible. Postulates, I say, not assumes. It may not be so; but only so far as it is so can philosophy accomplish its pur-pose; it is therefore committed to going upon that assumption, true or not. It is the forlorn hope. But as far as the process of nature is intelligible, so far is the process of nature identical with the process of reason; the law of being and the law of thought must be practically assumed to be one. Hence, in framing a theory of the universe, we shall do right to make use of those conceptions which are plainly essential to logic.the two words logic and reason take their origin from two opposite
views of the nature of thought. Logic, from logos, meaning word and reason, embodies the Greek notion that reasoning cannot be done without lan-guage. Reason, from the Latin ratio, originally meaning an account, implies that reasoning is an affair of computation, requiring, not words, but some kind of diagram, or abacus, or figures. Modern formal logic, especially the log-ic of relatives, shows the Greek view to be substantially wrong, the Roman view substantially right. Words, though doubtless necessary to developed thought, play but a secondary role in the process; while the diagram, or icon, capable of being manipulated and experimented upon, is all-important. Diagrams have constantly been used in logic, from the time of Aristotle; and no difficult reasoning can be performed without them. Algebra has its formulae, which are a sort of diagrams. And what are these diagrams for? They are to make experiments upon. The results of these experiments are often quite surpriz-ing. Who would guess beforehand that the square of the hypotheneuse of

Soc. Well, now, let me take an in-stance;- suppose that I call a man a horse or a horse a man, you mean to say that a man will be rightly called a horse by me individually, and rightly called a man by the rest of the world; and a horse again would be rightly called a man by me and a horse by the world:- that is your meaning? Her. He would, according to my view.Soc. But how about truth, then? you would acknowledge that there is in words a true and a false? Her. Certainly.Soc. And there are true and false prop-ositions?Her. To be sure.Soc. And a true proposition says that which is, and a false proposition says that which is not? Her. Yes; what other answer is possible?Soc. Then in a proposition there is a true and false? Her. Certainly.Soc. But is a proposition true as a whole only, and are the parts untrue? Her. No; the parts are true as well as the whole.Soc. Would you say the large parts and not the smaller ones, or every part? Her. I should say that every part is true.Soc. Is a proposition resolvable into any part smaller than a name? Her. No; that is the smallest.Soc. Then the name is a part of the true proposition? Her. Yes.Soc. Yes, and a true part, as you say.Her. Yes.Soc. And is not the part of a falsehood also a falsehood? Her. Yes.Soc. Then, if propositions may be true

four consecutive consonants not separated by vowels can be orthographically represented as a liga-ture called a consonant conjunct (Bengali: ZK juktakkhr or ZK juktbrn). Typically, the first consonant in the conjunct is shown above and/or to the left of the following consonants. Many conso-nants appear in an abbreviated or compressed form when serving as part of a conjunct. Others simply take exceptional forms in conjuncts, bearing little or no resemblance to the base character.

And will there be so many names of each thing as everybody says that there are? and will they be true names at the time of uttering them? Her. Yes, Socrates, I can conceive no correctness of names other than this; you give one name, and I another; and in different cities and countries there are different names for the same things; Hellenes differ from barbarians in their use of names, and the several Hellenic tribes from one another.Soc. But would you say, Hermogenes, that the things differ as the names differ? and are they relative to individ-uals, as Protagoras tells us? For he says that man is the measure of all things, and that things are to me as they appear to me, and that they are to you as they appear to you. Do you agree with him, or would you say that things have a perma-nent essence of their own? Her. There have been times, Socrates, when I have been driven in my perplex-ity to take refuge with Protagoras; not that I agree with him at all.Soc. What! have you ever been driven to admit that there was no such thing as a bad man? Her. No, indeed; but I have often had reason to think that there are very bad men, and a good many of them.Soc. Well, and have you ever found any very good ones? Her. Not many.Soc. Still you have found them? Her. Yes.Soc. And would you hold that the very

The nuances of education was de-livered by Rabindranath Tagore to the Rajshahi Association in 1892 and later reprinted in vol. 12 of the complete works Rabindra rachanavali (Visva-Bharati, 1942). The paper discusses the respective roles of the English and Bengali languages in pedagogy and calls for a primary curriculum which pays more attention to the lived experience of the students than that which is solely derived from school (and English) text-books. In the process, Tagore calls for a greater engagement with Bengali literature and language.

Rabindranath Tagore (also written Rabndrantha Thkura, Bengali: 2 , 7 May 1861 7 August 1941) was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical San-skrit. Author of Gitanjali and its profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse (from the Nobel foundation), he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.
