1. How long have you been running, and what is your inspiration?
I began running from a young age because I loved sports. Back then I just wanted to keep fit and healthy, and
it was also a way to warm up before playing football, which was my favorite sport at that time. I quitted playing
football at the age of 35 because I got badly injured. During my stay in hospital, my doctor told me the story of
a man who also had a bad injury just like me who could run the marathon. I was encouraged by the story and
determined to participate in a marathon the following year. I have stayed in the hospital for 3-4 months. Once I
got better and returned home, I resumed workouts by swimming and jogging. I have gradually increased the
running distance to cover 5, 10 and 21 kilometers, respectively. I did a few half-marathons before entering the
full one of 42 kilometers. It took 1 year of preparation for my first race, Bangkok Marathon, in 2006, and I have
been hooked ever since.
Marathon is challenging and it inspires me. Actually, my body is not that good for running. The professional
runners are small, thin, and tend to weigh 50-60 kilograms. But I weigh almost 80 kilograms. However, it can’t
stop me because I see it as a challenge. Moreover, when it comes to marathons, I can run anytime I want and
in all weather conditions. More importantly, it is an ideal sport to compete with the others and myself at the
same time.
2. Do you play any other sports beside marathon?
I also play squash which requires a lot of energy.
3. Do you run every day? How do you balance your running and your work?
Effective time management and consistent training are the keys. I’ll have a list of marathon races to compete
each year. I regularly join Bangkok Marathon and Khon Kaen International Marathon. I’ll train for 8 weeks
before each race, and I always bring with me daily training schedules for each week. I even set reminders for
my training plans on Outlook program at my office. If I have to stay at work longer than usual or have other
important things to do on the same day of a planned run, I will run a day earlier or a day later. I won’t skip my
training routine.
4. How do you choose which marathon you want to run?
I prefer to run 10 kilometers up. My favorite marathons are Bangkok Marathon and Khon Kaen International
Marathon.
5. What are your training plan and schedule?
I recently run at Lumpini Park and limit my training to five times a week, 1 – 2.30 hrs. each time. I won’t do
more than this because it will cause too much fatigue and won’t do my body any good. Moreover, I could risk
getting hurt. Normally, I start running at 7 pm until the park is closed. I also don’t mind the weather. For
example, I keep running even though it rains.
6. What are your sports, life and career goals?
Unlike some people, I pursue multiple goals instead of concentrating on only one goal. I personally think that
having a single goal will only cause stress if I am unable to achieve what I have expected. Having several
goals is a good idea because if I fail to achieve one, I still have a chance to accomplish the others.
7. How do you adjust yourself for running in Thailand’s hot and humid weather?
The heat is okay but humidity is a problem as it causes a greater sweat rate than usual, leaving me much more
tired and slowing me down. Weather significantly affects the performance of marathon runners. Running a
marathon in Europe is 20% faster than in Asia. For example, if running in Europe takes 3 hours, running in
Asia will take 3 hours and 40 minutes. However, most marathons in Thailand start early in the morning to help
runners avoid the heat. As I have mentioned before, I train for marathon in the evening when it is get hotter
and more humid, giving me an advantage over other runners when doing marathon in the morning.
8. Have you ever joined any other races in other countries besides the ones in Thailand and how are
they different?
99% of marathons I did were held in Thailand. I also did 3-4 marathons in Cambodia and France. Different
countries have different rules and regulations. In France and some other countries marathon organizers even
require medical certificates and other documents. In Thailand and Cambodia, runners are only required to sign
the consent form to participate at their own responsibility. What’s more, the vast majority of participants in
marathons in Europe are professional runners. In Thailand a marathon is joined by both professional athletes
and armatures and features people of all ages including individuals, groups of friends and families. Marathons
are gaining popularity in Thailand.
9. What is your impression about running? What has been your favorite marathon?
There are a number of very nice marathons that impress me. The most impressive one is Khon Kaen
International Marathon which takes place in January. The race starts very early in the morning, around 4-5 am,
and the weather is so nice with both sides of the street lined with locals cheering up the runners, some playing
music and some handing out water. When it comes to scenery, I like River Kwai International Half Marathon in
Sai Yok district, Kanchanaburi where runners will be enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery of lush trees
along the way. I am also excited about Bangkok Marathon, which starts at the unusual time of 2 am on the
elevated highway. It’s an extraordinary experience because we are running in the dark with lights up ahead
while more than 10 million people in Bangkok are sleeping comfortably in their beds.
10. Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Do you have a family? Are there any problems in
balancing running with your family? Does your family support your athletic activity?
I am 43 years old and unmarried. So there’s no problem to manage workout time. Personally, I think there are
three important things in life to focus on and maintain balance – work, family and friends, and sports. However,
I have to admit that running is currently my primary focus. When preparing for a race, I don’t have the time to
socialize with my friends. Fortunately, they understand me and know what I am up to. After the race is over, I
will get back to my normal life and hang out with my friends as usual.
11. Do you have any message to those who have never done a marathon because of fears of heat and
exhaustion?
You will never know the extent of your potential until you try. It’s never too late to start playing a sport. You can
start to exercise at any age. Sports are good for your health and keep your body strong.
