The Entrepot harbour has a rich history and was a centre for trade andindustry for centuries. In the nineteenth century, Rotterdam businessmanLodewijk Pincoffs developed harbours, the striking Poortgebouw gatebuilding and the “Five Continents” bonded warehouse. This part of theKop van Zuid area is no longer dominated by warehouses, which havegiven way to luxury apartments, artists’ studios and shops. The monu-mental customs office now houses Suitehotel Pincoffes. A bit more to theeast, the new Unilever office building known as the Bridge rises spectacu-larly above the surrounding buildings. The visible diagonal connectionsecho the structure of the nearby De Hef railway lifting bridge.

Once the postdistribution centre, the Central Post building has since been renovatedand is now a modern office building. The old part of the Beursgebouwexchange and World Trade Centre, for example, is a design by J.F. Staalfrom 1925. The modern café next to the entrance was named after thearchitect. 3 // DE UNIEJ.J.P. Oud 1924-1925Café-restaurant De Unie heeft een opvallende gevel met De Stijlkleuren,waarbij opschriften en lichtreclames in de totaalcompositie zijn op-genomen. Het originele gebouw aan de Coolsingel werd tijdens hetbombardement van 1940 verwoest. In 1986 werd de gevel gereconstru-eerd op een nieuwe, vergelijkbare locatie tussen negentiende-eeuwsepanden. Café De Unie has a striking façade in the primary colours and

values so typical of neoplasticism, known in Dutch as De Stijl (‘The Style’).The overall composition incorporates inscriptions and illuminated ad-vertising. Met de zich dynamischontwikkelende skyline als decor fungeert het Schouwburgplein alspodium van de stad. Het verhoogde plein, dat tegelijkertijd het dak vande parkeergarage vormt, bestaat uit een lichte constructie van uiteen-lopende materialen. The emptiness of this square was initially seen asproblematic in the densely built new Rotterdam, but Geuze saw it as abreath of fresh air. In his vision, the square serves as a stage for the city,with its dynamic skyline as the backdrop. The raised square, which isalso the roof of the parking garage, consists of a light constructionusing diverse materials.

Met de bouw van het stadhuis werd deCoolvest gedempt en de rosse buurt rond de Zandstraat gesloopt. In hetgebouw, gelegen rond binnenhoven, is zowel binnen als buiten veelbeeldende kunst aangebracht. Designed in neo-renaissance style by HenriEvers, the city hall is a stately and symmetrical building. The Coolvestcanal was filled in and the red light district was demolished so this cityhall could be constructed. 7 // KUBUSWONINGEN / CUBE HOUSESP. Blom 1978-1984Architect Piet Blom wilde de voetganger over de drukke Blaak leidenvia ‘het Blaakse Bos’, een brug bebouwd met kubuswoningen. DeKijkkubus laat als volledig ingerichte modelwoning zien hoe het is omte wonen tussen scheve muren. Blijven slapen in een kubus kan ook,in het onlangs geopende hostel Stayokay. Mededoor een openbaar uitkijkplatform op het dak was het gebouw zeerpopulair bij de Rotterdammers. Not justa smart idea for making the best use of the available space, this bridgebuilding is also a spectacular example of prefabrication. Thedynamic development in the Kop van Zuid area has shifted the city centretowards the riverbanks, with this bridge as a contemporary landmark.

Vanaf de Euromast had debezoeker uitzicht over de Floriade, het herbouwde stadscentrum ende havens. In 1970 kwam er nog 85 meter bij om de concurrentie metde nieuwe hoogbouw aan te kunnen. De diverse onderdelen lijken luchtig op elkaar gestapeld,waarbij verschillende contrasterende materialen zijn gebruikt; duur engoedkoop, verfijnd en alledaags. The Kunsthal is not a museum with apermanent collection, it is a large exhibition space. The building is builtaround a spiralling system of slopes. The various parts are seeminglystacked on top of each other in a light and easy fashion, using differentmaterials that highlight contrasts between expensive and cheap, refinedand ordinary. Inmiddels kent het museum drie ver-schillende uitbreidingen. Van der Steur’s design was inspired by Scandi-navian architecture. Traditional materials such as brick and copper ridgebeams stand in stark contrast to the white villas across the street builtin the same period. Coenen 1988-1993Architect Jo Coenen heeft de hoofdfuncties van het NAi in afzonderlijkegebouwdelen met een eigen architectonische karakteristiek onderge-bracht: het banaanvormige archief, de rechthoekige gesloten tentoon-stellingsruimte en een hoog glazen middendeel met kantoorruimte, debibliotheek en de centrale entreehal. Het NAi wordt ingrijpend verbouwd.De bibliotheek en de boekhandel blijven toegankelijk. Evenals de naast-gelegen museumwoning Huis Sonneveld. Deze villa uit 1933 van ar-chitecten Brinkman & Van der Vlugt is een sprekend voorbeeld van hetNieuwe Bouwen: licht, lucht, ruimte en hygiëne, mogelijk gemaakt doorde toepassing van nieuwe materialen en een staalskelet. Architect JoCoenen created separate parts of the NAI building for its main functions,each with its own architectural characteristics: the banana-shaped archi-ves, the rectangular closed exhibition space and a high, glass middlesection housing offices, the library and the central entrance hall. The NAIis undergoing major renovations. The library and shop are still open tothe public, as is the Sonneveld House. This museum villa from 1933 byarchitects Brinkman & Van der Vlugt is an example of the ModernMovement: light, air, space and hygiene, all made possible through the useof new materials and a steel frame.
