The authorities were less than helpful.Undeterred,ScottishWomen'sHospitalsopened itsfirst200bedAuxiliaryhospitalatthe13thcenturyAbbayedeRoyaumont,France,undertheFrenchRedCross.SuffragettesInglis,IshobelRossandCicelyHamiltonwereamongtheteamatRoyaumont.ThroughouttheFirstWorldWarScottish Women's Hospitals arranged 14 medical units to serve in Corsica, France, Malta,Romania,Russia,SalonikaandSerbia.Theyprovidednurses,doctors,ambulancedrivers,cooksandorderlies.During 1915 severalwomenwere captured by theAustroGerman armywhilerunningaseriesoffieldhospitals,dressingstations,feverhospitalsandclinics inSerbiaontheBalkanFront.AmongstthosecapturedwasfounderandunitleaderDrInglis.AidedbyAmericandiplomats, theBritishauthoritieswereeventuallyable tosecure theirrelease.
