This program is intended for undergraduate and graduate students at The University of Iowa (UI) as well as non‐UI students. No previous study of an Indian language is required as the academic program is conducted in English which is spoken throughout India. All students will receive credit and any addi onal credit toward specific degree requirements must be determined in concert with the student’s academic department.

Become a global ci zen and learn about social jus ce issues and the law in India. This course is a perfect fit if you are in law school, want to a end law school, or wish to learn more about interna onal social jus ce issues. You will be located in Bangalore, home of the Na onal Law School of India University. While there you will learn about India’s Na onal Legal Services Authority (NALSA) programs for promo ng social jus ce and will see how those programs interact with the law. The course will combine readings, lectures, and discussions involving faculty from the Na onal Law School of India University in Bangalore. Classes will be held at the law school and on the Visthar campus. You will interact with Indian law students who will par cipate in the discussions to give you a broader perspec ve of the issues engaged. Field visits will follow the lectures and discussions. You will also have the opportunity to observe oral appellate arguments. Grading will be based on par cipa on in discussions, a daily journal, final paper, and final presenta on upon returning from India. (Students not a ending the University of Iowa will write a slightly longer paper and will not be required to give a final presenta on.)

About the instructor Greg Bal is the supervising a orney for The University of Iowa’s Student Legal Services clinic. He was born in India and speaks several Indian languages including Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu. His legal career has focused primarily on providing legal representa on in civil and criminal ma ers to indigent popula ons. He is a graduate of Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa; The Judge Advocate General’s School in Charlo esville, Virginia; and the Na onal Criminal Defense College in Macon, Georgia.
