When Jerry arrived at MCLA, he decided to major in biology because he
loves science. While his initial goal was to become a physician assistant,
his MCLA experience encouraged him to aim even higher: he now plans
to become a doctor. After taking numerous science courses and working
“tirelessly” every semester to earn excellent grades, Kiahon proved to himself
that he is capable of being successful in medical school. “The great access to
tutors, teacher’s assistants, and to my professors all played a major role in my
academic success at MCLA. I like that MCLA is a small college. It was a great
fit for me because I was in an environment that guaranteed better access to
my professors. I loved my experience here.” Jerry’s undergraduate time at
MCLA culminated in being selected for the Massachusetts “29 Who Shine,”
which honors students across all of the public higher education campuses.

The Undergraduate Research Program encompasses independent scholarly
activity by students in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Driven by the many
opportunities for interaction between students and faculty, undergraduate
research at MCLA has expanded dramatically in recent years. The program
supports students with independent study opportunities in many disciplines,
small research/travel grants, the MCLA Scholar program, and a dynamic annual
campus-wide conference for presenting their work.
Beyond the campus, MCLA is a proud member of COPLAC, the Council of Public
Liberal Arts Colleges. MCLA students joined with peers from other colleges
in the Northeast to present at the regional COPLAC Undergraduate Research
Conference, hosted this year at MCLA.

Our travel courses meet regularly on-campus before and following

Travel abroad is a gateway to personal growth and learning first-hand
about other people and other places. What better way to prepare
for globalization than by experiencing it in college? Globalization
of communication, commerce, arts, and culture is revolutionizing
societies everywhere. Future success in business, politics, or your
chosen career will increasingly depend not only on professional
expertise, but on personal familiarity with clients, customers, and
associates from different cultures. Your learning as an MCLA student
studying in Europe, Asia, or the Americas will prepare you to meet
tomorrow’s challenges. It may also change your life today.

significance of the undergraduate college experience:
developing lifelong friendships, taking advantage
of internships and study abroad programs at MCLA,
applying newly acquired knowledge, and as incoming
students, debating concepts well beyond limits
allowed in most high school classrooms. Additionally,
I want to encourage students to find a sense of
balance early on in their academic careers, to ensure
necessary attention to studies and a positive and safe
social experience. Finally, self-advocacy is important.
Students must realize assistance is available for both
academic and social concerns, and be familiar with
how to locate such services.”

At MCLA, the overall goal of the housing program is to set
the stage for learning by providing a living environment that
is conducive to academic pursuits, personal growth, and the
development of lifelong friendships. Members of the Residential
Programs & Services (RPS) staff work collectively to ensure
each residence area is in good condition, safe, supportive,
and enriched with a wide array of out-of-classroom learning
opportunities. Most importantly, we help each resident find
a comfortable “home away from home,” which we believe is
critical to a positive college experience. On-campus housing is
