skills.TheDarkshadingsurroundingthe

fourvulturescapturedmyattentioninfrom

hisoveralldrawings.Theintensevalueinthe

givesthepieceamysteriousfeelfollowing

theemptypalefacesofthevultures

especiallyinBossTweed’sfacemakethateffectheusedrepetitionofthelinesto

createroughanddarktexture.Ialsolikethedirectionofthelightningboltheading

belowthecliffstodistracttheviewertowardstheskullsandcorpsethatliebeneath

thefourvultures.However,theitlackscolor,whichIbelieveisimportantinorderto

illustratorborninMarch5,1853.Best

knownforhisillustrationsofchildren

basedstoryforinstanceRobinHood.He

wasgreatlyinspiredbystorieshewrote

ofPiratesthatleadontocreatinghisownHowardPyle’sBookofPirates.Hewas

taughtatDrexelInstituteofArt,ScienceandIndustrytoprovideafoundationofhis

illustrations.Thesatisfyingeffectofproperuseofcolorsalluresmemoreintothe

characterandthesetting.Theheavycrimsoncapeonthepiratedominatesto

symbolizedanger.ThefocusofthepaintingistheBuccaneerstrikingwell

compositedposetoappealtheviewer.Thelightingismainlyfocusedonthepirate

andthedarknessisputmoreontheleftsidewhereanothermanlay’sinsidethe

camptocreateanillusionofspace.Although,thedelineationofthecharacter’sface

seemshaveanunbalancedtexturecomparedtothecrispdetailifhisoutfit.Now,

piratedmovieslikethePiratesoftheCaribbeanstarringJohnnyDeppusesimilar

costumesfromhisPiratebookillustrations.

ThePrisonerofZenda,1898byCharlesDanaGibsonmadeinkaddedasthe

frontpieceofabook.GibsonwasborninRoxbury,MassachusettsinSeptember14,

1867.Heinspiredbythebeautyofwealthywomen

suchastheirelegantappearanceandindependence.

HisparentsenrolledintheNewYork’sArtStudents

Leaguefortwoleadinghimtoworkforseveral

magazinescompanies.Hisworkofwomenis

significanttobasedonthehistoricaltimewhenin

realitywomenhadpoorequality.Incontrastinthis

piecehemadethewomanseemindependent.Her

elegantposturegivesherpower.Thesmoother

textureonthewoman’sfaceaddsontoasmoothsurfacecontrastingthemale’s

roughtextureofhisface.Thatdirectsthefocusonthewomanforamoreofan

appealingview.Toemphasizeherindependence,theartistplacedthewomanonthe

upperleftsidewithahighposturetogiveherauthorityoverthemenbesideher.

Nowinthe21stCenturymanyfeministfightanauthorityandindependencesimilar

tohowGibsongirlsareportrayed.

paintingsbasedonlargesceneries.Withwatercolorandoils.Hismotherwhowasa

painterherselfinfluencedhimasyoungchild.Inthispieceofworkhewasinspired

bythenatureoflightingfollowingthecolorsbeingilluminatedfromthegroundto

theskyreflectbacktothemainfocusfigure(horse).Thechoiceofpalettewas

limitedonwarms,whichmadeanunbalanceharmonyofcolors.Ibelievethepiece

lacksdistinctivetemperaturesbetweenthegroundandthesky.However,admire

thedirectionlightingthatisgentlyplacedonthewoman.Remindsoftheclassic

westernfilmstheslightlywarmfleshtonesinlandscapesamongsthills.

28,1887.Hewasinfluencedbytheimpressionist

stylepaintingofwatercolorsstartingfromthe

ageoffourteen.Hislaterworkprogressin

adaptingtocubismandotherdifferentformsof

abstractideas.TheLargeGlasswasusedwith

severalmediumssuchasglass,wires,foiland

dust.Therearemanyofshapesplacedalongthe

piecelackingunityandcomposition.The

divisionofthepiecemakeshardformetofollow

therhythmofthepiece.Thethindiagonallinesspreaddifferentdirectionstowards

dominantshapesontheleftsidecorner.Thevaluesarelimitedaswellasthecolor

hues.Ibelieveiftheartistusedmorecoloritwouldmakeabettereffectto

illuminatetheshapesoffthebackgroundtheforefront.
