What is Bon-Odori? 1
1. What is Bon-Odori?
Bon-Odori (盆踊り) is part of the
traditional celebration of Oban in
Japan. Originated as Nembuts-Odori
By Kuya Shonin (903-972),
a priest of the Pure Land sect of
Buddhism; its purpose is to attain
salvation in Amina Buddha's Pure
Land through ritual dance and
recitation of Nembutsu / Namu-Ami-
Dabutsu (Namu Amida Buddha).
Each region has a local dance
and min'yo folk songs.
A Yagura stage with Chochin
lanterns and Taiko drumming are
very important aspects of the festival.
Since its beginning Bon-Odori
has developed into a community
entertainment with group folk sing-
ing and dancing as its main feature.
It is the biggest summer family event
in Japan and is always accompanied
by many vendors of food, games,
candies, masks and crafts.
