JJaallnnaa,, DDeecc 44:: Jalna farm-ers in particular havedemanded action againstthe cotton seed companiesfor falsely claiming thatthe genetically modified(Bollgard II Bt cotton) isresistant to pink boll-worm.

In Jalna district itself2.78-lakh hectars cotton hasbeen infested with the pinkbollworm. According toAgriculture departmentabout 8-lakh-hectare land ofcotton is infested in thestate. The companies

claimed that BT cottonwhich was introduced in2012 controls bollworm dueto which the yield is pro-tected and thereby itreduces the use of insecti-cides meant for bollworm.

Recently, water supplyminister Babanrao Lonikarhinted that the seeds com-panies would be dragged tothe court for compensationas they are responsible fordamaging the crops. Theissue was also echoed in thegeneral body meeting atJalna zilla parishad onSaturday. The membersdemanded the governmentshould lodge criminal com-plaints against the seedcompanies for cheating andduping the farmers.

The ZP members saidnearly ninety per cent ofcotton farms in Jalna wereaffected and they statedthat the State Governmentshould seek compensationfor the losses farmers haveincurred.

District president ofSawabhiman Sanghatana,Sainath Chinadore saidthat the pink bollwormhas added to their woes ofalraedy distressed farm-ers. The State Government has failedto take any decision on the draftsubmitted by LanguageAdvisory Committee (BhashaSallagar Samiti) about policy ofMarathi language in next 25years.

After a gap of seven years, thegovernment formed the commit-tee to fix the policy of Marathilanguage in next 25 years. Thecommittee led by Dr SadanandMore submitted the draft to theLanguages Department fivemonths ago.

When contacted the languagesdepartment, its officersinformed that the process of get-ting approval for draft wouldbegin after taking opinions fromother departments. Chief secre-

tary will call a meeting of prin-cipal and additional secretariesof 30 departments soon.However, it is not clear as towhen meeting will be held.

The Languages Department

will take final decision on thedraft after receiving opinionsfrom all the departments. Thisindicates that it will take muchtime for the implementation ofnew policy. Persons from liter-

ary field feels that issue of giv-ing classical language status toMarathi is pending with theCentre, at least State govern-ment under its power shouldclear policy of Marathi lan-guage.

Earlier, the government hadset up a committee led by Justice(retd) Narendra Chapalgaonkarin 2010 to suggest measures forthe development of Marathi.

The implementation of com-mittee’s measures too weredelayed. Another committee ledby Dr Nagnath Kottapalle wasformed in 2014.

The final draft of his commit-tee too did not get approval. Thecommittee led Dr More too sub-mitted the draft to theLanguages Department. Now itis waiting for government’sapproval.

Finding the rosters madeby the Zilla Parishad faulty,resulting in over 250 teach-ers from open category assurplus, the state govern-ment hasissued an order to reverifythe rosters recently.

The rosters made by theZilla Parishad at differenttimes from the year 2002 tilldate, have done injusticewith 599 teachers from theopen category in the dis-trict.

A roster made in 2002 hadmistakenly shown 234teachers from backwardclass community to be inthe open category. Samething happened in the ros-ter made in the year 2010where 125 teachers frombackward communityselected through theCommon Entrance Test(CET) were shown to be inthe open category and atthe same time 41 teachers

from the backward commu-nity, who enjoyed benefit ofage relaxation, were shownin open category. Samething happened in the year2014 March where 199 pro-moted headmasters frombackward community werealso shown in the open cat-egory. This has all resultedin injustice with the candi-dates of open category.

The matter was broughtto the notice by the OpenCategory EmployeesAssociation to chief execu-tive officer (CEO) of zillaparishad, education offi-cers concerned, divisionalcommissioners and princi-pal secretary of ruraldevelopment department.

The government hasissued order recently toverify the roster and pre-pare it again by constitut-ing an independent com-mittee consisting of Dycommissioner at divisionallevel, additional CEO of ZP,Dy CEO and social welfareofficer of ZP.

A group of Shiv Sena activistsgave him a sound bash beforehanding him over to the police.

The librarian has been identifiedas Shaikh Shafiq (40). Accordingto the details, a B Sc II year stu-dent girl resides in Samarthnagar.She went to the library for gettinga book and demanded it to Shafiq,who groped her and further misbe-haved while handing her over thebook.

Unexpected move of the librarianshocked the girl and she moved 5-10steps back, but the brazen librari-an continued misbehave with her.

She raised an alarm and inresponse many students came toher rescue. The news of the inci-dent spread like a wildfire and agroup of Shiv Sena workers head-ed by Chhotu Zirpe, RajendraJanjal, Sagar Patil and othersreached the spot and beat Shafiqup black and blue before handinghim over to the Kranti Chowkpolice. A case has been registeredin the police station.
