‘Patient Connect’ offers new options
A new patient care and entertainment system, “Patient Connect” is being installed at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. It’s the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and the new equipment is expected to offer patients multiple services on one bedside unit. Through the use of a touch-screen television, healthcare providers can access the patient’s records and health care informa-tion at the patients’ bed-side, says Diane McDougall, Director of Health Services. Patients can use the system to access internet, telephone, and television. “The Patient Connect system allows us to offer patients several entertain-ment options not previ-ously available and gives healthcare providers more clinical tools and time at the bedside to focus on patient care, record keep-ing and health education. It truly gives us the best of both worlds with one device.” The system works by inserting a pre-paid “Patient Connect Card” into the bottom of the indi-vidual Patient Connect unit at the bedside. The patient can then access the internet, television
and/or telephone servicesthey have purchased.Patients, family membersor friends can go to one ofthe kiosks that will beinstalled in YorktonRegional Health Centre topurchase a PatientConnect Card which canbe loaded with a dollaramount, depending on theservices desired ($3-$12per day). Cash, debit andcredit card purchases areaccepted. Patients not well enoughto go to the kiosks may askfor a blank card from thenurse’s station and followinstructions on theirPatient Connect screenusing a personal creditcard. When the PatientConnect system is beingused by healthcare provid-ers for clinical care, thereis no charge to thepatient. The initiative is a jointproject of the SunriseHealth Region and TheHealth Foundation.Donations to The HealthFoundation have helped tosupport the clinical appli-cations adds McDougall. “The revenues generat-ed from the purchase ofentertainment serviceswill help pay for installa-tion, ongoing operatingcosts and maintenance ofthe system.”

Saskatchewan Agri-culture Minister Lyle Stewart and Member of Parliament for Saska-toon-Rosetown-Biggar Kelly Block recently an-nounced nearly $7 million in funding for 46 crop-re-lated research projects. “These projects will en-able producers to be more productive, competitive, and profi table.” “This year’s record-breaking Saskatchewan harvest demonstrates the benefi t of investments in research and innovation,” Stewart says. Projects to receive funding in 2014 include: • The performance of direct-cut harvest sys-tems in canola; Improv-ing nitrogen fi xation of peas; Improving disease resistance in wheat; How residue from soybeans contributes to nutrition and yield in cereal crops the following year; Iden-tifying new mustard va-rieties with improved yields; Honey bee health and the management of Varroa mites; The use of lentil bran as a food in-gredient; and, Weed con-trol practices. This funding is from the Saskatchewan Ag-riculture Development Fund (ADF) and is part of the record $27.7 mil-lion agriculture research budget for 2013-14. Through ADF, produc-ers benefi t from discover-ies in disease resistance,
weed management, herbi-cide tolerance, increased yields, new ways to add value to crops and new technologies. The investment in agri-culture research will help the agriculture indus-try achieve the goals set out in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which includes increasing crop production and agri-food exports and establishing Saskatchewan as an in-ternational leader in bio-sciences. This ADF funding le-verages additional third party funding of more than $3.3 million, with the Western Grains Re-search Foundation, Sas-katchewan Pulse Grow-ers and Saskatchewan Canola Development
Commission among the organizations partnering on ADF projects. In to-tal, 28 of the projects are receiving at least some funding from one of these groups. In addition, a sig-nifi cant level of funding and in-kind contributions are being leveraged from various other partners. “Pulse research is in-creasingly important to our industry as consumer demand for pulses contin-ues to grow,” Saskatche-wan Pulse Growers Exec-utive Director Carl Potts adds. “This funding will fuel further research in priority areas that will help us meet growing demand and build a long-term, sustainable future for the industry. We are pleased to once again
partner with ADF on this work.” “We appreciate the fed-eral and provincial gov-ernments’ commitment to advancing agriculture research in Saskatche-wan through the Agricul-ture Development Fund,” Western Grains Research Foundation Board Chair Dave Sefton says. “Co-funding partnerships be-
tween ADF and producer commodity groups help maximize the investment producers make in crop research.” “The ADF research projects will augment a growing sector because of the support of the fed-eral and provincial gov-ernments in agricultural research,” SaskCanola Board Chair Joan Heath
concludes. “Research is vital in order to ensure Canada’s position as a global leader.” Funding for ADF proj-ects is provided under Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-terri-torial initiative. A com-plete list of funded proj-ects is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/ADF.

The Bra Lady is Coming to Size You Up
Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra.
Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.Due to overwhelming response to the last clinic, Chapman is
coming to YORKTON, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly.“Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your
“everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful
marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to
give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your
breasts ached from lack of support while running or jumping? If you answer yes to any of these, you are in need of a new bra,
and a custom one could be the way to go.
1-800-254-3938 by January 30thShe doesn’t come into town very often so she advises booking
as soon as possible. Although Chapman enjoys coming to your area, she is looking for someone to train for the business.

Ed, my neighbor next door, admitted that it was a twist of fate that sat us beside each other at the movie theatre. Both of us had grandchildren staying for the holidays. Our grandchildren wanted to see, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.’ What I knew about the Hobbit would have left a thimble empty. Ed expected me to have read the 1937 novel, ‘The Hobbit,’ by J. R. R. Tolkien. He doesn’t read books, but because I do, he seemed to think that, I should have read it. I think, ‘The Hobbit,’ must be a long and involved book. It is taking three movies to adapt the book to film. I don’t read lengthy and complicated fantasy books. Our grandkids had seen the first movie of ‘The Hobbit.’ They both under-stood about what was going on in the beginning of, ‘The Desolation of Smaug.’ I liked the 3-D presentation of the movie but, Ed took offense to
decapitated heads of Orcs that went sailing by him. Our grandkids understood about the group of dwarfs, the wizard Gandalf, Wood Elves, Bilbo the Hobbit, and Smaug the sleeping dragon. Apparently, another movie will conclude the Hobbit book. Neither Ed nor I will be as excited as our grandkids to see it. Ed asked that since I have seen the movie will I now read the book. I had to confess that I’m not inter-ested. I realize that is what many think when it comes to reading the Bible. It seems to them that the Bible is to too long and too complicated with endless
different characters. The Bible can seem intimidat-ing with its two parts divided into so many books. The Old Testament has thirty-nine books, and the
New Testament twenty-seven, but the sixty-six books do have one focus, Jesus Christ. The Old Testament points to the coming of Christ. The New Testament tells of Christ’s coming and His blessing for now and forever. The Bible was written that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior, from God, and that by believing we might have life in His name. The Bible’s message is a true message that we may well not want to hear. We do need a God given Savior, who saves us from our-selves. We do not like to admit sin rubs ourselves
and our world raw. Marion Soards wrote that Jesus Christ is not a fabrication: “He is not fast-er than a speeding bullet – a hand-held spear pierced his side. He is not more powerful than a locomo-tive – he dropped under the weight of the cross. He is not able to leap tall
buildings in a single bound – he didn’t even come down off the cross where, nailed up, he bled and died.” Jesus laid down the privi-lege, position, and power of heaven to become a will-ing servant of God. He was willing to sacrifice himself so that love could over-come evil for all.

Women have different nutritional needs than men, and these needs change during the varied stages of life. To keep things simple, it’s good to know that many vitamins and supple-ments are designed to meet the specific needs of each gender.
For example, Life Brand’s popularDaily One is designed for women and contains extra ingredients like calcium and iron. Many women need to eat more calcium-rich foods. Those who do not get the recommended two serv-ings of dairy per day (three if you’re over 51) may be lacking calcium, a key mineral in maintaining strong bones and teeth. Life Brand offers a wide selection of multivitamin formulas for women and offers more than 20 differ-ent calcium products. To promote bone health, con-sider supplements with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.
New combination prod-ucts can help support spe-cific health concerns. A women’s probiotic supple-ment from Life Brand con-tains cranberry and sup-ports both digestive and urinary tract health. For healthy hair, skin and nails, look for a new combina-tion formula that contains ingredients like selenium, biotin, lutein, vitamins E and B1, and beta carotene.
Do you want to con-sume more healthy essen-tial fatty acids for heart health and cognitive func-tion? Oily fish and flax oil are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which play a role in heart and brain health. If you’re not getting two servings per week of oily fish like salmon, look for Omega-3 blends, such as
an Omega 3-6-9 product.Life changes like aging
and pregnancy can impact a woman’s diet and supple-ment needs. Consult your doctor or pharmacist to see if you might need to take a vitamin supplement. “Supplements are not meant to replace foods, but to balance a nutritious diet,” says Shoppers Drug
Mart pharmacist Veneta Anand. “During pregnan-cy, for instance, your doc-tor or pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate supplement that contains suitable amounts of vita-mins and nutrients for mom and baby.”
A folic acid supplement should be taken by healthy women who are planning
to become and are preg-nant. In the later stages of pregnancy, more iron is required to help produce healthy red blood cells.
Sometimes it’s difficult for women to consume enough iron from foods, and most doctors recom-mend that pregnant women take a daily iron supple-ment of 30 mg to 60 mg of
elemental (ferrous) iron in addition to any other pre-natal vitamins. At Shoppers Drug Mart, Anand suggests a range of vitamins suit-able for pre-natal and preg-nancy needs, including the new Prenatal Kit and a new Algae Omega-3 Prenatal supplement.

It’s easy to remember important vitamins by simply thinking of your ABCs. To ensure you and your family are getting enough of them in a balanced diet, nutritionist Louelle Levenberg outlines the key benefits of vitamin supplements from A to E:Vitamin A
Vitamin A helps maintain bones, teeth, skin and vision and also sup-ports a healthy immune system. Food sources of vitamin A include liver, dairy products and fish—but did you know that the body also converts carotenoids from plant foods into vitamin A? Carotenoids are found in high quantities in dark green, yellow, orange and red vegeta-bles and fruit.Vitamin B
Important B vitamins include Thiamin (B1), Niacin (B3), Riboflavin (B2), Folate, B6 and B12. They work to make red blood cells, form DNA,keep the nervous system healthy and even help the body use energy from food. B-vitamins are found in all four food groups, so be sure to eat a variety of foods from Canada’s Food Guide.Vitamin C
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is important for the growth and repair of bones, teeth, skin and other tissues and can increase the body’s abil-ity to absorb iron from plant foods. Well-known for its antioxidant properties, vitamin C also helps prevent cell damage and supports immune health. Vegetables and fruit are the best sources of vitamin C; some foods, like peppers, broccoli, cabbage, guava, papaya and orang-es, provide higher levels of vitamin C.Vitamin D
It’s important to get enough Vitamin D because it helps the body
absorb and use calcium and phosphorus for strong bones and teeth. It can also help protect against infections by keeping your immune sys-tem healthy. Food sources of Vitamin D include milk, yogurt, eggs and fish.Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that helps protects cell dam-age by free radicals and also helps support healthy immune functions. Vitamin E is found in foods that contain healthy fats like nuts, seeds and cold pressed vegetable oils, and also in green leafy vegetables and fortified cereals.
“When you lack key vitamins and nutrients, feel stressed, or are sleep-deprived, your immune system can suffer, increasing your sus-ceptibility to illness and fatigue,” says Levenberg. “If you can’t always eat healthily, you may want to add a supplement.” She suggests a spec-trum multivitamin to top up vitamins A through E and other key nutri-ents. “Everyone has different nutritional needs depending on age, health or dietary needs,” she explains, “so it’s important to choose a supplement that is right for you.”
“A helpful online source for information is the vitamin finder at www.lifebrandvitamins.ca,” Levenberg points out. “If you would like to make it easier to take vitamin supplements, take a look at new for-mats the like latest vitamin D offering from Life Brand that comes in a chewable tablet.” Other formulas, such as vitamin C, are available in blueberry and citrus flavours. For kids, Levenberg recommends Life Brand vitamin D drops and gummy multivitamins.
