Yolk protein/vitellogenin is the major content of yolk which is the source of nutrition for embryonic

development. In this study, two yolk protein (YP) cDNAs, Bdyp1 and Bdyp2, were identified in the oriental

fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel). RT-PCR analysis revealed that both YP genes were only expressed

in the fat body and ovary of adult females. The tendency of the two gene expression patterns is following

vitellogenesis of first batch eggs. Furthermore, the expression profiles between Bdyp1 and Bdyp2 are

different in fat body, indicating that divergent regulatory mechanisms might exit in B. dorsalis yolk protein

gene expression. While 20-hydroxyecdysterone (20E) plays a major role to promote Bdyp1 expression in in

vitro fat body, Bdyp2 exhibited greater response to JH III. Unexpectedly, 20E-induced yp geneexpression

was suppressed by the addition of JH before 20E treatment; conversely, it was enhanced by the addition of

    JH after 20E treatment.
