HOUSING
01 HOUSE IN RODIZIO Work Experience 04 / 05 Loc. : PortugalColaboration with Francisco Tojal Arquitecto
LOCALIZATION
The house, inserted in a wide pine-grove area of the Atlantic
coast, takes the advantage of his insertion to gain a panoramic
view over the Sintra Mountains extended from east to south. The
area pendent allows a privilege relation between the house posi-
tion and the nature around, as well a better profit of the solar ex-
position.
PROJECT
The house is developed in two floors. The main floor directly
served by the garage, is a more private space, witch the access
is made through a distribution hall for the different floors. The
main floor contains 3 bed-rooms with a east location view, one of
them with own bath-room and the other two with an independent
bath-room.
The first floor is designed in a huge connection between exterior
and interior. Every space were designed to guarantee that this
connection is a constant day by day, to profit the maximum day
light, and to create atmospheres living from the landscape as
a background, from his transformation from morning till night.
The ample interior is gained trough great wood doors, witch in
all height divides the space, trough solid and massive pane, the
wood brings the natural to a connection or dialog between three
elements (concrete, plaster, and glass). The concrete look is a
constant in several atmospheres, with different finishes, he as-
sumes a main importance in textures of walls and ceilings, turning
to light structural elements and constructive processes.
The interior patio located on the main hall, does the transition be-
tween social spaces (Living-Room, Dining-Room, Kitchen, Social
Bath-Room) and private spaces (2 Suites), hidden behind a wood
pane. The patio inserts another natural element in the interior,
transforming the entrance and the transition between two spac-
es, a pleasant experience.
The social areas, living room and dining room, absorb the exterior
in is higher potential, trough two huge glass walls this areas as-
sume the meaning of foreland trough the huge pine-grove.

INTERVENTION AREA
After doing the plan or strategy to recover the town as a whole, the workgroup was
divided in specific areas. Having completed the plan before as a main line of work solu-
tion programs for the great necessities of Barreiro have been tried . The town has no
character and it is far away from its earlier resource, the estuary of the river Tejo.
The area in which I will be working and which I will develop is situated in the big artificial
platform from Chemical Park. This area has 23 hectares of typical industrial scen-
ery, marked by the deactivation and degradation of the constructions and by unique
topography that contrasts with the rest of the platform. It has a scenic identity and
character in the middle of the industrial ground.
The empty industries divide the place in two separated nucleus by visual topography.
They are in opposite places of the intervention area and so they oblige to a diagonal vi-
sion of the constructed territory. The exceptional situation of the platform and of the
existent scenery allows the proposal of programs which will recreate a river front in
Barreiro and which will solve the main problems of the town: urban, economical, social
and cultural problems.
ORGANIZATION AN TERRITORY PLANNING
The organization of this territory will have to extend the green corridor, proposed in
the general strategy, which goes from area 1 (consolidated urban area) through area
2 (urban area needed consolidation) to the area I will be working in. It runs through
the existent topography, it gives life to the platform and unifies the two constructed
nucleus giving the scenery a new element and a topographical union, which extends
itself to the river.
The two nucleuses, which were constructed in a very defined artificial way, will in this
way have different ways of co-existence with the green corridor. Their program and
the relations between the natural scenery and the existent topography have to be
considered. The proposed project for this area wants to transform an empty indus-
trial area with special geographic and morphological characteristics in a big educa-
tional centre for the study of arts and crafts. On the basis of this program the idea is
that young people can be attracted to live in Barreiro and at the same time we want
to involve the old people in the project too by giving them the possibility of learning and
doing crafts.
The two nucleuses will have completely different programs but they will complete each
other. The one near the estuary of the river will be a place for students and artists to
work and to live in. This nucleus corresponds to the topography and has a structure
of a place open to the river but closed to itself, having a private, closed and separated
atmosphere. The school of arts and crafts will be in the other nucleus and in contrast
to the first one it will break with the topography and will be an open place in a complete
interaction with the different aspects around, it will be a public place. Barreiro 2007 [aerial view]

00. THE EXISTING
The Secondary School Brotero Avelar was founded in 1884 under the name
School of Industrial Design. Successive reforms have been introducing chang-
es in the designation of the school, but not in their teaching vocation, which con-
tinues today, alongside the regular curriculum, a focus on teaching and tech-
nology workshop. This academic program is reflected naturally in the building
that the school is currently and since the 50s. The school consists essentially
of three building blocks / sets of spaces and articulated around a central open
space. A first block deploys along the Rua General Humberto Delgado (Bulding
A), where there are classrooms, laboratories, library and administrative areas.
Connected to this block, a central block (Building C) houses the gym and spa,
as well as the cafeteria and bar, and a small set of classrooms in two promi-
nent arms of this body. A final big chunk consists of the workshop areas (Build-
ing B), which complete the set built. The exterior spaces are occupied mostly by
sports fields.
+
- volumetric and spatial structure flexible and clear
- global wide area
- large outdoor areas
- unbalanced occupation of the spaces
- notorious area of deficit in some program areas
- lack of clarity in the articulation of volumes constructe
01. STRATEGY
Identified which were the gains and losses that the building in its current offering,
is now to define an intervention strategy based on four fundamental aspects:
- Definition of new program areas;
- redefinition of accessibility;
- redistribution of the program;
- clarification of Circulations.
02. NEW AREAS
The new program areas set out in this speech are those already identified as a
deficit in the current situation. Thus, new areas to build matching to:
- a covered sports center and gym, to deploy in the top semi basement west of
the central courtyard (Building E);
- an area of support and work of teachers (Building D), to implement embedded
in the existing slope, which limits the south central courtyard;
- two spaces for general support, in the category of social places, in two vol-
umes implanted on the terraces of the two arms of the central body: the bar
and a multifunction room;
Another new area of intervention will be located on part of an existing building,
which is proposed to be partially demolished, allowing to creat a new volume
for workshops and laboratories, capable of increasing the area per floor in this
building and match the aims of the new program required: to support areas of
workshop area and new physics labs, chemistry, biology and geology.
03. PROGRAM
The programmatic reallocation we intend to perform this particular propos-
al aims to correct the current discrepancy in the intensity of use of different
parts of the school, as well as promote an effective integration of the two ma-
jor strands teaching that the school houses - regular education and technology
education.

Designat for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2011 REQUALIFICATION
04
04 RODRIGUES LOBO HIGH SCHOOL . REQUALIFICATION Work Experience 08 /10 Ins Lobo arquitectos, ldaLocalization : Leiria, Portugal
The opperation proposed for this set basically derives from the first operation
of a project that proposes to redefine the point of school entry. The new school
entry will be completed ahead of Est rising ground, between two longilineous
arms who demarc the terrain north and south. It refocus the school not only
in its horizontal programatic distribution but also altimetric passing the main
entrance to be done in an intermediate elevation between the highest points
and lowest in the whole building. From this operation comes the main point of
action for the project, which is mainly for the design and qualification of the cen-
tral strip of land bounded on the north and south by existing buildings, and are
deploied the full range of building new spaces - spaces closed to refocus the
activity and the flow of users from school in this central band.
Thus all the spaces of collective rights, as well as sports facilities are built along
this central band, leaving the existing buildings primarily devoted to teaching
spaces, and other parts of new global program for the school. The south build-
ing includes spaces for arts education in its ground floor, in the courtyard 2 lev-
el. In the superiors floors, the rooms housing the source laboratories on two
floors, leaving the room to the west dedicated spaces for teachers, governing
bodies and secretariat.
The three vertical volumes who adjoined the existing building and solving the ver-
tical access between floors, have also the sanitaries for each floor, as well as
tcnical areas for vertical communication of infrastructures, and an elevator,
which solves with acceptance the issue of the disabled in the building.

REQUALIFICATION
05
05 JOAQUIM CARVALHO HIGH SCHOOL . REQUALIFICATION Work Experience 08 /10 Ins Lobo arquitectos, ldaLocalization : Figueira da Foz, Portugal
The proposal in its essencial has as fundamental assumption to not overlap the new
construction to existing construction and maintenance or even emphasizing the func-
tional diagram of the current formal aspect and in particular the operation on two out-
door level spaces associated with construction, and maintenance of the longitudinal
shaft distribution conditions since the main entrance to the inside face of the coverd
sports pavillion.
The new construction, by contrast with the existing building, is a low building that hous-
es mainly programs intended to have a strong relationship with the exterior, such as
rooms for the teaching of Arts, the Canteen / Bar and Library. Areas strongly infra-
structured are still included in this building as are all service areas to the Cafeteria,
Laboratories, and Workshops for Visual Arts. Formally and functionally the building
especially pretend to define itself as an enclosed area related to the adjacent outdoor
spaces, linking the two levels where they are implanted. The space of the Gym / Mul-
tifunctions Room is precisely the space in which this articulation of quotas appears
more clearly.
In the existing building are distributed mainly the classrooms in the two upper floors
and areas designated for governing bodies, teachers and work opportunities center
on the Atrium level. The tolillets to the existing building are associated with the new
vertical access implemented by the encounter with new construction.
from the new proposal results a new design of the exterior open spaces around
the school, setting out clearly in two types of open spaces: petrous an delimitated
in space between the new and the existing volumes, and a set of open spaces, well-
planted, involving the whole enclosure in a green massive.

06 5 SCHOOLS IN AFRICAPortuguese Official Representation 8th So Paulo InternationalArchitecture Biennial Work Experience 08 /10 Ins Lobo arquitectos, lda Localization : So Tiago, Cabo Verde
The challenge put to us by the Minister of Culture and by the Directorate-General for Arts was to use the occasion
of the Portuguese presentation at the next So Paulo Architecture Biennial for a more propositive and eventually
useful action that would not be exhausted by the narcissism of conventional shows/ presentations. The resulting
project for the national presentation in 2009 is briefly set out below.
We took this challenge to be an opportunity to build a situation that might very well have continuation, an action that
would not end with this show. For once the exhibited projects will not be situations borrowed from other contexts
where they follow their own specific courses, but rather situations created specifically for the Biennial and meant
both before and after to take paths previously oriented towards the idea of a more democratic and inclusive city.
And for once also the projects on show will not appear wrapped in millionaire budgets, as if it were impossible to pro-
vide comfort, solidity and beauty with a lower cost ceiling.
The focus was purposely turned to Africa and the Portuguese-speaking African countries which are historically
and emotionally closer to us. The shortfalls faced by these young nations as they struggle to build fairer and more
democratic societies amid the huge imbalances caused by an irrational global economy are well known. The subject
of education and respective constructions naturally seemed most compelling to us, where it would make the most
sense to stimulate and promote.
One or more schools for Africa that was the first rough idea.
The action (resulting in the exhibition for Brazil) involves five teams which were commissioned to come up with five
specific project designs for school buildings of great architectural quality and low cost, strongly sustainable in
terms of future upkeep and social and environmental aspects. The projects would subsequently be offered by the
State of Portugal to the African members of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Cape
Verde, Guinea-Bissau, So Tom and Prncipe, Angola and Mozambique.
The five selected teams of Portuguese architects travelled to their respectively assigned African countries, stay-
ing for about one week, with the following objectives (fulfilled in all cases): to visit a specific site where the construc-
tion of a school was envisaged; to work out with local authorities a minimum programme adjusted to local educa-
tional practice; to visit operational school buildings; to come into contact with people, landscape, climate and overall
local situation, in order to better understand the specific sites where they would design; to meet architects and
other officials suggested by the entities involved who could fill them in on construction problems and capabilities and
inform them about traditional and industrial production in those particular areas.
The exercise Portugal takes to the Biennial is thus the first stage of a more far-reaching action: to actually build in
each one of the chosen Africas an appropriate architectural object appropriate for local scale, local conditions
and local technologies and materials.
The resulting project designs have resulted in five expressively-scaled models which will be part of a collection that
will be the main subject of the exhibit/presentation. A catalogue to depict working methods and present the ac-
tions complete results will also be published.
This effort is not meant to end with the exhibition/presence in So Paulo. The commissioned projects should later
continue on to their respective destinations, where the Portuguese government (through commercial or institu-
tional sponsorships) will endeavour to see them built. A second edition of the catalogue should eventually be re-
leased, including one or two sections on final results of the operations to build the various projects.
Only then will the cycle begun on the pretext of the 8th So Paulo Biennial be completed, illustrating the generous
hypothesis that for each place, for each problem, the architects designed a unique response, using their sensitivity
to isolate a specific critical possibility: what they deem best, fairer, more appropriate and more beautiful to place at
the disposal of the specific and unique people who will inhabit same.
From the disciplinary standpoint, the actions title (Five Africas/Five Schools) should be read as a cultural affirma-
tion branched out in five distinct countries/places, neither dogmatic nor reductive five different designers/five
also different schools (educations, ways of seeing, sensitivities) and very much in line with the plural period now
experienced by contemporary architecture, locally and internationally.

07 WETTBEWERBNeubau MIN-Forum Hamburg - Hamburg Universitt - Anerkenung Work Experience 11 /12 Huber Staudt Architekten Localization : Hamburg, Deutschland
beiden geometrischen Bezugssysteme erzeugt spannende, abwechslungsreiche Stadtrume.
Bundesstrae vernetzt.
Freiraumkonzept, Forum Campusplatz, Campusplatz

Beide Gebude be-

rch groformatige Platten 80x40cm gekennzeichnet.
Eingangs- bergangsbereiche miteinander verbinden.

Hier erhlt man
Lichtrichter getrennte eingeschossige separate Kursbecken angeordnet. Die Raumhhe des Sprungturmes ist entspre-
chend grozgiger ausgelegt.
Mglich wren hier eher ruhige
bereich spricht dafr.
