NewMexicoYouthOrganized(NMYO)isacommunity‐basedorganizationdevotedtoimprovingthelivesofworkingfamiliesinourstate.Throughengaging17‐34yearoldsinthecivicprocessourmissionistoinspirethenextgenerationofleadersinNewMexico.

SANTAFE–SenateBill318,DevelopmentFundsforGreenJobspassedtheHouseofRepresentativesonavoteof61to1,Wednesdaynight.The“greenjobsbill,”sponsoredbySenatorEricGriego,hassuccessfullypassedbothchambersoftheNewMexicoLegislatureandnowheadstoGovernorRichardson’sdeskforhisconsideration.SenateBill318isdesignedtohelpsmallenvironmentallyfriendlybusinessesrelocatetoNewMexicobygivingthemincentivesthroughtheJobTrainingInvestmentFund(JTIP).IfGovernorRichardsonsignsthebill,JTIPcouldbeusedtoreimbursetheseeco‐friendlybusinessesforthecostoftraininglocalworkers.TheJTIPmechanismisusedtodriveeconomicdevelopmentinurbanandruralareasofthestatebymakingiteconomicallyfeasibleforgreencompaniestooperate.“ByinvestingingreenjobswecanprovidecleanenergyforNewMexicoandatthesametimecreatethousandsofjobs.Thesejobswillhelpworkingfamiliesthatarestrugglingduringtoughfinancialtimes.”–SenatorEricGriego“NewMexicoisblessedwithanabundanceofrenewableenergyresources.Creatingagreeneconomywithgreenjobscanberealizedwithatrainedandskilledworkforce.Withthiseffortwearecreatingincentivesforstart‐upbusinessestocreatejobsforallNewMexicans.”SpeakerBenLujan“SenatorGriego’sbillwillattractgreenbusinessestothestateandencouragethemtohirelocalresidentsforwell‐paid,dignifiedjobs.Thissimultaneouslyhelpstheenvironment,increasestheemploymentrate,andimprovestheeconomy.Ultimately,thisisgoodforpeopleandtheplanet.”‐VienTruong,SeniorPolicyAssociateatGreenForAll.TheGreenJobsbillsaredesignedtobuildtheinfrastructurenecessarytomeetfederalrequirementsforthe2009Stimuluspackage.Bypassingthisbill,membersoftheNewMexicoLegislaturehavetakenanimportantsteptohelpbringfederaldollarstothestateanddevelopasustainableworkforce.NewMexicoYouthOrganized,GreenForAll,ConservationVotersNM,NewEnergyEconomy,theCoalitionforCleanAffordableEnergy,NaturalResourcesDefenseCounciland1Skyhavebeenworkingonthegreenjobsissuesforoverayearandarecommittedtobringingclean,sustainableenergytoNewMexico.
